Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Without losing a single word, they made their way up the steps to the small courtyard to join the deadly crowd of combatants. The mercenaries fought with unprecedented fury, forging their way to freedom. Setia's head was becoming more and more of a problem, she felt the blood flood her face. Ars tried to protect her, worrying for his lover gave him additional strength. The following events seemed to Setia like individual paintings. Opra's blonde hair flowing backwards as she falls stabbed by an Equerd officer. Ironically, Boregin was knocked down by an axe blow. Ars ... in this confusion she tried to take the most convenient position, if it is her time, she will not sell her life cheaply. A soft whistle and then a blistering pain in her right leg. She fell over the barrels standing under the stairs. With one last reflex, she crawled deeper. The stairs and the barrels provided shelter against arrows. The time has come. She nervously searched her pockets, hoping that her last aid hadn't fallen out during the frenzy of the fight. With trembling fingers, she pulled out a small vial of dirty green liquid. The infusion was supposed to help her with what she was about to do. The drink was tart but effective. Pleasant numbness seized her entire body. A moment later it passed. Setia put the knife handle between her teeth and broke off a part of the arrow sticking out of her leg. Pain jerked her whole body, it took a moment to calm down again, then she made a band around the wound from the sleeve of her shirt to reduce the blood loss. All her activities were slow as the brew worked. Now she must gather her strength. The feeling of numbness came back in waves. Setia watched the small square from her hideout. Slowly the day gave way to dusk, and the sounds of fighting moved deeper into the castle. She was losing blood, she felt all energy slowly leaving her and the cold gradually seeping into her body. The entrance to the tower was only a few meters away from Setia. She was calculating how quickly she would be able to get there. She crawled gently to the barrels covering her. Her muscles were numb, running fast was impossible. She decided to crawl towards the tower. There were lots of bodies on the way. She was dirty and sticky with blood, hers and the dead ones she killed. She wasn't much different from dead bodies lying in front of her. Slowly pulling her leg up, she dragged herself to freedom. She had the feeling that the sound of her beating heart was heard everywhere, and it would betray her for sure. She watched the group of soldiers standing on the steps leading to the main courtyard. She pulled herself up nervously, making her way between two dead warriors. One was an Equerd with an arrow sticking out of his eye socket the other was from Knror,he was looking at the sky with unseeing eyes full of astonishment and had a deep cut on his shoulder. Her hands were stuck in mud mixed with blood. She almost held her breath as one of the passing soldiers grabbed her hand and, staring out, tried to speak to her. Only a deeper sigh escaped his lips, and a trickle of blood ran down the corner of his mouth. Setia unhooked his fingers from her hand and then something unexpected happened. About 10 meters from her, a tall, broad-shouldered figure rose. His face was covered with a helmet with a visor in the shape of a hawk beak. Tregor! He drew his bow out and shot it straight at the nearest Equerd. This was her chance. She got up and covered the last few meters, jumping up and supporting her injured leg.

"Over there !" She heard someone screaming.

Tregor was left behind, she couldn't help him. On all fours, she climbed the steps towards the glowing point of an opened window. Without hesitation, she managed to throw the body through the window opening, and after a while it splashed inelegantly into the cold water of Rosad river, which formed a pool here. For a moment the impact on the surface of the water took her breath away, the pain in her skull nearly rendered her unconscious. She was a great swimmer since she was a child, but the wounds she suffered made her totally weak. The mercenary, however, decided not to give up and fought desperately for every breath. The current was weak here, she felt a metallic taste in her mouth and orange spots began to appear in front of her eyes.

-"There's a woman running away there!"

The whistle of an arrow motivated her to continue. Odegon's Castle had an excellent strategic position, it seemed to her at the beginning. It is surrounded on two sides by the forks of the Kanwir and Rosad rivers. The latter finds its outlet here in a swamp stretching north of the castle. Setia was also going there. She had managed to get out of the river and was now trudging through the muddy slush as far from the castle as possible. She gasped for air, the fear and will to survive, which gave her energy, slowly gave way to the exhausted body. When once again the spots appeared in front of her eyes and her breath almost burst her lungs, she decided to rest for a moment. The tired body claimed its rights, Setia lost consciousness.
