Chapter 96 - Shadowed Betrayal

The Blackwood Legion came out of the oppressive arms of Wraithwood revitalized, the blessing of the forest coursing in their veins. However, as they set their sights to the distant horizon, where the enemy's forces gathered like storm clouds, an unspoken unease lingered among them. The Wraithwood's gifts were powerful, but they came with an unshakable weight—a bond to a force that was as ancient as it was enigmatic.

She followed Elira as they proceeded up an icy, narrow path through frosted trees. Ideas upon ideas, strategies upon stratagems, raced with contingencies in Elira's mind. The words of the Guardian echoed in her brain: "Betray the balance, and the forest will reclaim what it has given." She glanced at the warriors behind her: They trusted her to guide them, but the burden she carried was heavier than before.

"Captain," Kael said, falling into step beside her. "We need to talk."

She nodded, motioning for the others to continue ahead. Once they were out of earshot, Kael spoke in a low, urgent tone. "The forest's blessing—it's changing us. Can't you feel it?"

Elira frowned. "I feel stronger. More focused. That's what we need if we're to win this war."

Kael's face grew somber. "It's more than that. The whispers haven't stopped, Elira. They've just. shifted. They're guiding my thoughts, steering me toward things I wouldn't normally consider."

"You think the forest is manipulating us?"

"I don't know. But we need to be cautious. This alliance may cost us more than we realize."

Elira's eyes hardened. "We have already paid a high enough price just to live this long. If the gifts of the forest give us any edge, I will take them."

Kael hesitated then nodded. "Just promise me you'll keep your wits about you. We can't afford to lose ourselves."

Their conversation was cut short by a shout from the front of the column. Elira and Kael rushed forward to find Dain standing over a crumpled figure lying in the snow. The young recruit's face was pale, his sword drawn and trembling in his hand.

"What happened?" Elira demanded.

Dain indicated to the figure. It was one of their scouts, Brynn, who had gone missing during their journey through the Wraithwood. His armor was battered, and his face bore the marks of a brutal struggle.

"He just. stumbled out of the trees," Dain stammered. "I thought he was dead."

Elira knelt beside Brynn, feeling his pulse. It was weak but steady. His eyes flickered open, full of a wild, panicked light.

"The forest," he croaked. "It's not what it seems. The Guardian. it lied."

A shiver ran down Elira's spine. "What do you mean?"

Brynn's grip on her arm tightened. "The blessing. it's a leash. We're not allies. We're prisoners."

His words rumbled a shiver through the Legion. Kael's warning from earlier came to her mind, but she held it at bay, attempting to stay calm. "Sleep now. We'll get you to safety."

Brynn's eyes rolled back and he passed out. Elira stood up, stern on her face. "We'll make camp here. He needs care, and we need answers."

The Legion drew a perimeter around themselves, moving swiftly but with an undercurrent of tension. What had once comforted in the warm glow of the blessing now weighed on them. The campfire danced, casting long, flickering shadows across the darkness that seemed to come alive with specters.

Elira sat off to herself, staring into the fire. Kael joined her, his face etched with concern. "You heard him, Elira. If the forest's blessing is a leash."

"I know," she said. "But we can't turn back now. What the Guardian wants is its problem. We take the enemy down first."

Kael's jaw clenched, and he nodded. "In that case, we have no choice but to be ready for whatever comes next".

They didn't know, but glowing eyes watched them from the darkness beyond the flickering light of the campfire. The forest wasn't finished with them; the whispers carried a new promise—of betrayal and reckoning.
