Chapter 1 - 1

I ran as fast as my feet could carry me, far away from the village I had settled in a few months ago. The sound of screams yelling loudly into the night, sent fear-stricken panic through my veins. However, I couldn't stop running or I was going to die.

"Help me, please...!!! Someone shouted behind me very far off.

A loud snarl followed after, with a piercing scream loud enough to shake the trees and the animals in them to a wake. Crows fled into the sky, spreading their wings as they soared into the air. I wish I could fly away to a safer place away from the monster that followed my every path. If only that was possible.

Sharp twigs brushed my face, even cutting my arm as they harshly brushed them aside. Running into open ground, I felt exposed, easy prey to what was coming to me. Going a little further, I was met with a cliff ending. Breathing heavily as I stared down the path that it led to, I might not make it from the fall. I thought to myself.

The tree leaves rustled, the sound of heavy paws hitting the dusty ground. Turning my neck to look over my back, I checked the depth of the fall and then, back at what was approaching me through the trees.

I was faced with my final decision. If the moon goddess was on my side, I might make it.

Closing my eyes, I leaned back towards the edge of the cliff. Goodbye world. At least I made it this far.

I jolted up from my bed drenched in sweat, breathing heavily. The cold morning air drifted into my room from the window, sending chills into the room. I looked outside the window, the rays of the sun staining the sky with its new morning glory.

I was alive, I sat there in silence. My racing heart calmed to its monotonous best. Yet another nightmare of that night: I jumped off the cliff. My cold palm quivered with the thought. It was still a shock to me. I was alive.

Lost in my thoughts, I failed to sense the footsteps approaching my hut. Until a loud knock sent another wave of shock into my bones. It's here, it's going to kill me after I survive that fall. I was a fool to think I was free.

"Open up. It's dawn. We need to start work", the voice of a young woman behind the door snapped me from my panicked thoughts. Short for words but with a sigh of relief, I stood up to answer her. Pushing the door open but not too wide, I peeked outside to see her standing just inches away from the door with an annoyed look on her face.

"Could you give me some minutes?" I asked in a small voice.

She scoffed at me, her eyes flickered with hostility "waste your time then, but I called you anyways". She left after that.

I went back into the room. The whole room was in a dishevelled state. I needed to hurry up and tidy up.

I had moved to another town on the east coast of the forest. They found my body at the bottom of the cliff. I was brought into their pack and taken care of by their pack doctor.

It was just a few months ago, and like any normal werewolf, I healed up completely since then. It is still a shock to them since most of my bones were broken at different angles. I stretched my body, feeling a dull ache on my shoulder.

I set out of the hut they had provided for me in the village. Making my way to the pack doctors' house where the injured were being taken care of. I volunteered since I happened to be good with herbs.

Walking through the village filled with weary eyes fixed on me as I made my way towards the doc's house. It was normal to be weary of rogues entering a pack. Why was I near their territory? Why was I badly injured? Possible questions that could be going through their minds.

Finally, at the door, the door burst open before I could knock. Standing with a cheerful grin was the pack doctor. She was seeing a patient outside.

"Don't forget to take it easy and rest up as much as possible?" she said to him. He gave her a warm smile, resting her palm against his forehead.

"Thank you for all the help," he said in a grateful tone. He turned to face me. A deep scowl etched on his face. Making sure to bump into my shoulder as he left. Unfazed by what he did. I walked into the doctor's house. She had gone into the house not noticing what had transpired seconds ago.

"I am sorry for arriving late," I said, going to take my uniform from where it was hung.

"You must have slept in again. That's why I told Avery to go get you." She said in her happy tone. I always wondered why she smiled so often, no matter the reason. Just then, avery entered with a basket of white sheets, possibly from the patient's room. I didn't miss the glare from her as she passed the room.

I went ahead with my work for the day. Cleaning the place.

Time had passed and I was on my way back to my hut. Exhausted from the walk, I collapsed on the bed, snoozing off with a snore. I woke up in the middle of the night. I had fallen into a deep slumber again. I washed my face, reaching out to what seemed to be my towel. However, from the corner of my eyes, I saw it.

Its black figure stood just behind me with an ominous look.

I swiftly turned to see nothing behind me. I shook my head repeatedly, refusing to accept the fact I saw it. No, it could not be possible. They couldn't have found me. That soon.
