Beeping monitors, a baby crying.
Her blue eyes tried to open but immediately closed.
Varya wondered how long it has been since she had been asleep. Her body felt heavy, but she tried to roll over in case it would take away the strange feeling.
"Varya, no," Ebari said in a quiet voice. "Don't move, please."
Varya felt Ebari's hand on her shoulder. The more aware she became, she felt numbness and pain at the same time all through her stomach and side. She tried to lift an arm and gasped.
It all started coming back to her, the burns, her baby.
She opened her eyes and a tear fell out as she saw Ebari's concerned expression. For the first time, he didn't seem to be holding back anything. Underneath his eyes looked dark like he had been awake for days.
He hadn't left her side for even a moment.
"Where's my baby?" Varya asked, her voice cracking with emotion.
