Chapter 22 - The House in Bristol

Treasure woke up weak at midnight. She looked around and caught a glimpse of someone sleeping at her feet. Taking a closer look, she realized it was Jake. She called out to him but didn't get a reply, so she slipped out of bed and headed for the door.

"Gosh, I'm so thirsty." She muttered to herself as she staggered out of the ward. She had just gotten to the lobby when she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen, and quickly, she fell to the floor wincing. In a flash, the whole incident of her attack rushed through her mind, and just then she remembered something.

"Who could that be?" She asked herself.

"how did he get past my bodyguards? Something isn't right here." She complained.

"I know that wristband, I've seen it somewhere before, but where?" She asked herself still clutching her abdomen.

"There she is!" Jake yelled as he ran towards Treasure.

"What are you doing out of bed Tresh? You scared the shit out of me." He said lifting her off the floor.

"Are you ok?" He asked hugging Treasure to himself.

"Yes I am." She replied still clutching her stomach. Jake carried her back into the Ward and left to get water.

"How do you feel now?" He asked as he watched her gulp down the glass of water.

"I'm fine, thank you." Treasure replied wiping the corners of her mouth with the back of her hand. Jake smiled.

"Treasure, can I ask you a question?" He said.

"Can you remember the face of the person that stabbed you?" He asked but Treasure shook her head

"No..." She said "

"He was on a cloak, but he was wearing a wristband. A very familiar one, but I can't remember where I've seen it." Treasure replied caressing her temples in frustration.

"No...no" Jake said holding her hands.

"Don't stress much about it. The cops will be here to ask some questions too, but you shouldn't stress yourself to give them accurate answers ok?" He said, and Treasure nodded. Jake leaned towards her and kissed her forehead.

"Good afternoon madam, we are officers from the..."

"Yes, the Bristol Police Department. Is there a time I can take a break from having to host you bunch at my house?" Cherry spoke interrupting Detective Kyle.

"We are so sorry to have disturbed you ma'am, but we are here to ask you a few questions concerning the murder of Lord..."

"Yeah... yeah... Johnson Gale Marcus" she finished, interrupting Kyle again.

"I have told you I had nothing to do with his death! Why don't you get it?" She asked furiously.

"It's been so many years already yet you bunch are still on this case, isn't this a sign that you're not doing a great job as cops?" She yelled.

"Please relax madam, you just have to answer a few questions, please cooperate." Detective Kyle replied.

"What's your relationship with the deceased?" Detective Kyle asked.

"Ex_wife." Cherry replied impatiently.

"I believe you have kids for him..." Came detective Kyle.

"Yes, two sons, Curtis and Charles" cherry replied.

"Exactly where were your sons on the night of your husband's assassination?" Kyle asked again looking intently at Cherry.

"I have already told you, they were both in bed." She replied.

"Did you check to see?" Kyle asked again smiling slyly. Cherry was lost in thought. She remembered visiting her son's rooms to turn off the lights, but she didn't really check if either of them were really in bed or not.

"I...I don't know, I didn't really check, I only turned off the lights and went straight to bed, but I trust they wouldn't have gone out without my knowledge." She replied.

"Ok thank you very much for your time." Detective Kyle replied getting up to leave.

At the same time in Treasure's ward, the police were asking her questions regarding the incident that had almost taken her life.

"Miss Marcus, please try to recall, do you remember anything about that wristband?" Detective Shirley asked the fourth time.

"No, I don't really remember, but I know for sure that, that bangle belongs to someone really close to me." Treasure replied holding her head in frustration.

"I just can't remember exactly where i have seen it."

"That's enough please." Jake said holding Treasure.

"She is not doing very well detective, please let's stop the questioning for now." He said Detective Shirley nodded her head in agreement and left, while Jake tucked Treasure in.

Somewhere in Coventry, the hooded murderer was being scolded by his boss for not executing his job properly.

"The job wasn't done asshole! How could you make such a big mistake? I thought you said you were good at this? You had her at your mercy, but then you let her slip away! You better find a way to get out of this and you dare not implicate me, got it?" Someone spoke over the phone in a rage.

"Yes sir, I will see to it." The man in the black hood replied and after putting off his phone, he boarded a cab home.

Two weeks later, Treasure was discharged. Jake took Treasure home, and after he had tucked her in bed, she said to him.

"Jake, call in my bodyguards." Jake observed her before leaving to call the guys in.

"Good evening ma'am" they greeted simultaneously, but Treasure didn't reply. She looked at each of them with disgust in her eyes.

"I can't believe you all let me down." She said

"Exactly where were the six of you when this happened huh? She asked

"Should I still say that I've got bodyguards after something like this? You all are..." Treasure stopped, looking intently at Chad's wrist.

"J...Jake?" She whispered, and he bent over to listen to her.

"Call detective Shirley, quick!." She said in panic, and quickly, Jake went out with his cell phone. After fifteen minutes of which Treasure was busy distracting the bodyguards with her scoldings, Jake walked in with Shirley.

"Chad? You said you were with the others when they left to check out a black SUV packed outside the building right?" She asked, but Rufus replied almost immediately.

"No, but, he was the one who took the call of the unknown person and he told us about the information of the SUV" At this point, detective Shirley stroked her chin.

"So tell me Chad, exactly where were you when Miss Marcus was stabbed?" She asked with a little frown on her face, but before Chad could say anything, Treasure yelled.

"The wristband! Yes...yes! I remember now! That was the same wristband! The guy in the hooded sweater had exactly the same wristband on." She yelled. Quickly, Shirley seized Chad, and putting cuffs around his hand, she said boldly.

"You're coming with me to the station Chadwick, you're a prime suspect." She pulled him out of the room, while the others kept mute, staring in both shock and disappointment.

"You couldn't protect me even when I have you lot, it makes no difference if you guys weren't there anymore. You harboured an impostor without even knowing, and you failed to rescue me at the most crucial and dangerous moment of my life... I'm sorry, but you all are fired." Treasure said then gestured them to leave her room.

"What's wrong Tresh?" Jake asked as he observed her countenance.

"Well... Nothing really, i'm just a bit scared." Treasure replied

"Someone is definitely after my life. I wonder if he or she was the same person who murdered my dad. I don't know who my enemies are or how many they are, but I do know one thing for sure, they are after my property papers." Treasure said caressing the chain on her neck.

"I need to make a voyage to Bristol, as soon as possible." She said.

"Why? What are you going there for?" Jake asked holding her hands.

"I can't tell you that." Treasure replied with a smile.

"I understand you can't trust anyone Treasure, but you have to trust me" Jake said.

"I trust you Jake, but I have used up your time." Treasure replied

"You've got to return to New York, you've got loads of work to do remember?" She asked as she stood up to leave got up to leave but Jake held her.

"Tresh, your life's in danger. I...I need to be by your side at all times, I need to protect you Tresh, please, let me do this one thing for you Treasure, take me with you please." Jake begged, but Treasure refused.

"I'm sorry Jake, I really can't afford to endanger anyone's life right now, the only thing I want you to do for me is to go back to New York city. I can't bear to loose you Jake. Treasure replied.

"Your mom knows nothing of this right?" Jake asked

"No, I have no intentions of telling my mom about this." Treasure replied. Just then, Mrs Daisy stormed in.

"I took the next flight back to Coventry as soon as I heard that you were attacked. It's such a relief you're alive Treasure " she wept.

"What now? What can I do to ensure your safety at all times?" She cried as she hugged Treasure.

"I'm fine mom, I really am" Treasure replied patting her mom lightly at the back.

"Thank you Jake if you weren't there at the nick of time, I...I wonder what would have become of Treasure..." She said to Jake

"Please don't cry Mrs Daisy" Jake consoled

"Everything will be fine soon" he said. Just then, Treasure's phone rang out. When she had taken the call, her eyes widened in shock as soon as she was told the name of the person who had sent Chad to assassinate her.

"T...thank you, I...w...will be careful from now onwards" she struggled to reply and when she had hung up the call, a tear rolled down her cheek.
