Mom came back and so did Owen. I helped her to prepare dinner while Owen set the table and we ate. Dad called and said he would be working late and won't be able to make home for dinner. After dinner was done,I did the dishes and retired to my room. The wind blew really hard and the power went off. The house became dark.
"Jocelyn! Jocelyn!!"Mom called
"Yes Mom"I replied
"Could you turn on the candles?"Mom asked
"Okay,but where are they?"I asked
"They are in the basement. Third box to your right"She said
"Can't Owen get it?"I said, scared of going to the basement alone
"Your brother would be asleep by now and I don't want to disturb him. You know how grumpy he gets when he's disturbed"She reminded
"Okay"I said
"So will get the candles?"She asked
"Yes"I said
"I'll be in Chloe's nursery if you need anything"She said
Staying in the dark was one thing but going down to the basement is Spooky. Just thinking about gives me goosebumps. I turned on the flashlight from my cellphone and went down to the basement. The seem much longer at night than they are during the day. Lighting came in like flash and thunder took over. This made me more terrified than I was already. Hail knocked on the window as they fell from the sky. It was like getting ice cubes from the Heavens. I saw the box filled with candles just like Mom said it would be. I was relieved. I took as many packs I could handle and headed to the stairs. I was about to reach the staircase when I heard some squeaky sound come from the window. I got scared and tried to ignore it. I was about to take a step forward when the noise became constant. I summoned courage, shivering in fear and went to check where the squeaky sound was coming from. It grew stronger from the behind the washing machine. I think it's coming out. It shadow grew bigger and bigger than I became really terrified. Now this was a good time to scream. I screamed to the top of my voice, the loudest that ever came out from my lungs. Mom rushed in immediately and Owen did a few seconds later.
"What is it?"She asked, worried about what I saw
"There is... there's a monster"I stammered, shivering in fear
"Monster? Where?"Owen asked
"There, behind the washing machine"I pointed, hiding cowardly behind Mom
Owen walked a few steps towards the washing machine to figure out what the monster was.
"Owen be careful"Mom cautioned
He nodded and continued his search hunt for the monster. As he got closer to the washing machine,he was surprised at what he saw. I saw the look on his face and became really scared. I hugged Mom really tight.
"Owen, what is it? What does it look like?"Mom asked
"Jocelyn, you're monster is a..."He said, keeping me in suspense
Who knows if it's an alien? Or worst,a black mamba or an alligator? Thoughts ran through my head non-stop. I almost peed on my PJ.
"What is it?"Mom said
"Her monster is a little white mouse. See how cute it is"He said, picking up the little guy
"He was nibbling on some cables"He added
"Wait! I was afraid of a mouse?"I said, surprised to see the monster
The power came back on and I was able to the mouse clearly. It was so adorable. The night is filled with mysterious creatures.
"C'mon, let's go back to sleep"Mom said leaving the basement
"I'll call you... Richie. Richie the mouse"He said
Speaking of pets, where's Coco? She must be terrified by the storm too. I left Owen and his new pet mouse in the basement and looked for my beloved Coco.
"Coco! Coco!!"I called
I searched for her in her favorite places: the toilet, under the couch,Mom and Dad's bedroom. It turns out she was in Chloe's nursery. I guess she needed some company. I went to my room to get a good night's sleep. I overheard Mom and Owen arguing on whether he could keep Richie or not. Mom told him that keeping Richie is a lot of work and isn't sure if he's up to the task. He pleaded with her till she gave in. She gave him only a month to prove he is capable of raising a pet all on his own. His cage, food and medication will come out from his allowance. He agreed to all the terms and conditions as long as he can keep Richie. She still reminded him the huge responsibility he's getting himself into. I lied down on my bed, covering myself with my warm blanket and slept off.
At school,I narrated the whole incident to Claudia. Instead of sympathizing with me she burst into laughter. Just when I thought I could rely on Claudia to understand me.
"You were afraid of mouse?"She chuckled
"It was dark and scary. How was I to know it was a mouse nibbling on the cable?"I explained
"The mouse couldn't haven't been that hideous. Maybe you over exaggerated when you saw it"Claudia said
"Maybe"I said
Xavier passed Claudia and I with a bevy of ladies, giggling. He didn't even look at me. He just walked past us as if he didn't know me. Like I didn't exist. I felt sad. You could tell by the expression on my face.
"Why the sad look?"Claudia said
"Nothing"I replied
"Is it because of Xavier? C'mon Jocelyn, when would you open your eyes and see this guy is only playing with your emotions. He doesn't really love you"Claudia said
"Yes, he does. Maybe he didn't see me"I defended
"Oh brother! When will this nightmare end?"Claudia said
"Xavier and I are two different people but I think we are destined to be"I said
"You think? What happened to the NO FANTASY WORLD?"Claudia asked
"I know I did say all that but I feel like Xavier and I have a special connection. I feel all nervous and shy when I'm around. Her heart beats faster. I've even of waking up on day and be called 'Jocelyn Martinez"I said
"You have plan on marrying him"Claudia said
"Maybe"I replied
"Maybe? Sometimes I wonder if you were hit on the head"Claudia said
"It's just a harmless thought"I said
"Harmless? Do you even realize what you're doing? What if I this is a joke to him? Then what?"Claudia asked
Claudia won't stop telling me about all the worst things that could happen if I fell in love for Xavier. A few minutes later, Xavier walked towards Claudia and I.
"Umm... Claudia?"He tapped her on her shoulder
"Yes, what is it?"She replied
"Do you mind if Jocelyn and I could talk? In private"He said
Claudia understood what he said and went to class. It was just Xavier and I, alone, staring at each other.
"Jocelyn, how are you?"He said, breaking the silence
"A little bit under the weather but I'm fine"I replied
"I sent you a lot of text messages but you didn't reply to neither one of them"He said
"That was because I was tiràed after the competition and needed some rest. Sorry about that"I apologized
"No worries,I wanted to know if you were okay"He said
"So..."He said, hiding his hands in his pocket
"I've to get going now"I said, about to leave
"Jocelyn wait"He said, pulling my arm
"Yes"I said
"I want to know if you will be free tomorrow"He asked
"Yes. Why do you ask?"I said
"I wanted to know if we could meet up at the ice cream store after school. Just the two of us,if you don't mind?"He said
"No, not all"I said with a smile on my face
"Okay then, it's a date"He said, leaving with s smile on his face
"A date?"I said, still surprised about Xavier's proposal
It's true of the old saying'Walls have ears'. Who knew Ivy was hiding the lockers, eavesdropping on my conversation with Xavier. I didn't even see her when I walked passed the lockers. I was too busy day dreaming about my date with Xavier.
"Xavier is taking Jocelyn on a date? This I got to tell Brianna"Ivy said as soon as the coast was clear.
