Chapter 20 - Establishing Trust

My steps echoed on the stone floors as I entered Kieran's chambers. I had debated all night long if I should share this with Kieran. Frankly, I didn't trust him.

I could've asked other demons, but it would require me to pull a lot of strings. I wasn't sure if I wanted to use the dirt I had on the other older demons yet. It was useful information.

With Kieran, there was only one string I had to pull without messing up. I placed the clock in my cloak again. Kieran didn't know I had stolen the clock, and I intended to keep it that way.

I knocked and waited. Kieran called out a second later, 'It's open!'

I pushed the doors open and closed them behind me. Kieran was sitting on the sofa, reading a book. I looked at him in disgust and he looked up with an arched brow.

I wish he'd taught me how to do that because it looked cool. But I would never tell him that.

'What?' He asked, then resumed reading his book.

I sat on the coffee table in front of him and tried to take the book from his hands. He kept a tight grip on it then let go, and I sneered at him in annoyance.

'Seriously? Shakespeare?' I surfed through the book but Kieran snatched it out of my hands.

'What do you want?' He kept the book aside and leaned forward.

So I decided to ask him straight up, 'Who deals with the demon souls in Limbo?'

He blinked in confusion, then surprised as his eyebrows shot up. Kieran leaned back on the sofa and analyzed me, 'Why?'

I moved onto the sofa and his eyes narrowed further. I stared at him from under my lashes and asked, 'Please?'

He looked at me with a pained expression and groaned, 'What did you do now?'

I whispered in his ear and he jumped, 'If I tell you, will you answer my question?'

'Fine, ' He pushed me against the sofa and glared at me.

I smirked and began, 'Azrael's trying to get me exiled from Hell.'

He blinked in surprise and pulled away, 'Wait, what?'

I pretended to look at my nails as he processed the information I just told him. When I looked up, he looked angry, and I almost sighed out loud in annoyance.

'What did you do?' He eyed me with suspicion but I only rolled my eyes.

'I sneaked into his chambers to search for his blade. I didn't find it but,' I waved my hand and continued, 'He thinks I stole something from him and wants me gone.'

It wasn't exactly a lie. I had been searching for Azrael's blade and Kieran knew this much. He didn't know the reason why but that didn't matter.

Still, he eyed me with suspicion, 'How did he know you sneaked in?'

I shrugged and laid back on the sofa, resting my boot-clad feet in Kieran's lap.

I had his frustrated voice say, 'You're not telling me everything.'

I snorted at him for stating the obvious, 'Duh.'

For a minute, both of us were quiet. Then, Kieran began, 'The Demon Master and Beelzebub are the ones working on it closely. But,' He paused as he met my eyes, saying, 'Azrael does have some control, mostly because of his powers.'

I thought about it for a second and asked, 'Is it the reason for their rivalry?'

He shrugged, 'Could be.'

I looked at Kieran, debating if I should show him the clock or not. The sight of souls kept roaming in my head, and I took out the watch.

I was just about to show the watch to him when someone knocked on the door. I hastily tucked the watch into my pocket as Kieran got up from the sofa and walked over to the door.

The level light from under the doors was golden so I suspected it was probably Leviathan.

'Ah, son.' He walked into the room like a king, his chin held high. But stilled upon seeing me lying on Kieran's sofa.

'Náli.' His voice was flat and disappointed. Although, I wasn't sure if the disappointment was in me or his son.

Leviathan turned towards Kieran and said, 'We need to talk.'

Kieran began in protest, 'We can talk late-'

'Right now.' With that, Leviathan walked out of the room.

Kieran glanced at me for a second, and I raised my hand in farewell. I heard the door shut and immediately got up. I walked over to the doors and placed my ear against them.

They were speaking in hushed voices so I could barely make out what they were saying. But, Leviathan screamed all of a sudden in a loud voice.

'Do you know what she has done?!'

'Azrael is crazy, dad! He wants to exile her!'

'Do you plan on getting exiled alongside her?!'

'If that's what it tak-'

There was some shuffling noise, then, 'I don't want Azrael as an enemy, so you'll do as I say. Is that understood?'

'No!' Kieran screamed so loudly, that I cringed and leaned away from the door.

He murmured something in a low voice but I couldn't hear it. Then, I heard the doorknob turn and ran towards the sofa. I jumped on the sofa in time and resumed my old position just as Kieran entered the room.

He walked over to me in quick steps and frowned down at me, 'What did you steal from him?'

I blinked innocently at him and said, 'Nothing.'

He pinched the area between his eyes and said in a sigh, 'Náli..'

Earlier, I had been ready to tell Kieran everything. But as I looked at him now, I realized I couldn't tell him this. Unless I wanted Leviathan to find out.

Unlike Kieran, his dad was the complete opposite. I knew he would hand me over to Azrael any second if he found out that I had stolen something so important. He knew his son too well.

So I sat up on the sofa and pulled him towards me. His lips met mine in a rough kiss as he sat beside me. He tried to say something but I pushed up against him, silently telling him to shut up. I climbed onto him as he rested against the sofa.

His hands grabbed my waist and mine drifted behind his head. Our tongues battled for dominance and he let me win. We made out for a couple of minutes before breaking apart.

Our breathing was heavy, and I looked into his lust-filled eyes. This was exactly why I knew I could get anything out of Kieran. He liked me a bit too much, and I fully intended to use that to my advantage.
