The eerie silence crept up all through the room. The grunts of Kay were gone. The creaking of the floorboard was gone. The sobbing of William was gone. The only sound Journee could hear was her own heartbeat that was through the roof.
All looked at each other. Journee was breathing heavily. She had her mouth open, and she immediately looked back at her feet. She kept her eyes on the floor trying to figure out what that sound was. She knew in a situation like that it was best not to move even an inch or even breathe loudly. She had to get her breathing under control.
"What was that?" asked Kay. He stopped pulling the mattress from under the bed. He was now on his knees looking at Journee with widened eyes. His eyes were ready to pop out of their sockets with fear. William kept looking at Kay and Journee alternatively as if he was watching a ping-pong battle.
