"No…No No NO!" she had cried whilst running through the crowded hallways of the hospital.
The staff scurried hurriedly around the halls, some from the front counter and some from the nearby coffee shop.
'Room 115 requesting immediate assistance, patient HAYASHI MIHARU (光春) NEEDS IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE. REQUESTING HELP! ' as the speakers announced the heart-rending news, the doctors prepared for a risky operation.
*I should be numb to this by now but…I-I can't, I can't hold it anymore…*
Tears started to fall down Yuriko's cheeks as she finally arrived at the patient's door. A new trial awaits as time slowly ticks.
"Yuu San, you're finally here!" "Are you ok Hayashi San, your eyes are puffy and your nose is running?" the worried staff cried. She waved a signal assuring the staff that she is fine and asked for the details of the situation.
"Your sister's- ah I-I mean the patient's condition is very unstable right now. Her vitals are going crazy and her heart isn't going to be able to hold on for any longer," As the young assistant reported the information Yuriko's face twitched and she refused to look at her suffering sister in the room in front of her.
*Her heart is unstable, very unstable. Can I risk trying to inject the medicine into her bloodstream? NO, that won't do. Her body shouldn't receive any more stress from pumping the injected medicine throughout the body. The cancer cells should be clogging up her heart's superior vena cava. If we can do it fast enough we can do an open heart surgery and kill all of the cancer cells. However, the risks are high…AHH we don't have the time for this.*
"All of you listen up!" she shouted, the other doctors quietly listening, "Prepare the equipment for an open heart surgery in room 3A. Mira, you're my assistant in this trial, Kiko, prepare the anaesthetics, and the rest of you do your original roles. Now go!" she commanded. The staff nodded simultaneously and went their way.
She made her way into the room with her sister, pushing and shoving at the other doctors to clear a path. As she clasped her hands around the rim of the bed she whispered to her sister in a breathy voice. "Hey sis, you'll be alright I promise. The operation will be quick and painless. I'll see you after a quick sleep,"
Miharu's arm twitched and grasped her sister's hand within hers. Her eyes slowly opened, with only slits to see through. The shocked Yuriko could only wait and listen to what her sister would say. She lowered her face and placed her ear next to her sibling's dry lips.
"Yu-u-Yuri…what's going on? What op-operation did you talk a-about? What-" She took many pauses throughout her questions, weak and tired from the lack of oxygen through the slow pump and flow of blood.
Yuriko placed her hands onto her sister's lips forcing them shut. She gave her sister a weary look. She gave her sister a gentle kiss on the forehead, reassuring her sister that everything will be alright. As she glanced at her assistants with a serious look the only thing she could see on their faces were worried looks and concerned faces whispering.
The doctors who had already changed and equipped their gloves and masks came to escort Miharu to the surgery room. As she was wheelied away Miharu had her eyes on Yuriko. The two sisters stared at each other as they were slowly separated. Miharu's eyelids, heavy as they were, gave only a second for them to bid farewell before she was welcomed into a dark void. Yuriko's feet seemed to be glued to the ground, as she couldn't move a single step. She just stared into oblivion until Mira broke the loud silence.
"SENPAI! WAKE UP! HELLO?!"
The sound of her heart beating next to her ear slowly faded away and her eyes slowly cleared up to a screaming person. She jumped back a few steps, but immediately lunged forwards and shutted Mira up.
"Mf-MMMM!" Mira being persistent with muffled screams Yuriko let her go.
"Uh-ha-ha gimme a min to breathe," she said, gasping for air. "Kiko has prepared the anaesthetics;however, do you really want to use "that" on your sister." Kiko asked, both seriously and worriedly.
Yuriko had anticipated this question and had a paragraph of an answer ready to let out an explanation. However, when she opened her mouth only the sound of her breath managed to flow out. The words seem to have gotten stuck in her throat, unable to come out and explain her reasoning. She only stood in silence unwilling to look at her underling. After a long pause the words finally came out.
"It's the only way to guarantee her life, OK!" she screamed "I don't want to lose her, I can't lose her after all that has happened."
Tears streamed down her face. Judding glares and stares came Miras way. Unsure of what to do she just sighed and said "I support you. It's your choice as the one leading and as her sister." Those words seemed to have setted something off inside Yuriko and she quickly jolted and ran for the front counter.
"HEY! SENPAI!"
"I'll be back, make sure everything is prepared. I'll go and quickly grab the Life Remnant and I'll meet you in room 3A!" Yuriko answered.
"Ah wait- and she's gone."

"Ah wait- and she's gone." Mira sighed.
Life Remnant is a special type of medicine that is meant to prolong a person's life. It has just been developed a few years prior to this situation. Not many people have used Life Remnant and its full properties have not been discovered yet.
As she arrived at the 1st floor she ran straight for the front desk. "Saiko! Saiko where is the Life Remnant kept!" she asked, egerdly. The woman with the glasses had glanced up and gave her a death stare. "So, you are going through with this ha?" Yuriko stared at her, eyes bursting with determination. "If you wish to know, it is stored in the first shelf to the left in the FST room. You're in luck, we only have one in storage too," Saiko answered, schofing but slightly smiling.
"ARIGATOU!"
As she dashed through the halls her cloke fluttered and hair flowed in the heavy air of the hospital. Her heart sank at the very thought of losing Miharu. This was the only solution to guarantee a 100% chance that she will live. However, these are only just the prodo types and not the fully developed versions of the Life Remnant. Yuriko was willing to bet on the hellp from the Life Remnant. She can't lose her sister after the separation of their parents, the death of their grandma, and especially after they both became doctors.
She rummaged through the clutter but organised shelves. The Life Remnant was already contained in a syringe and sealed tightly in a plastic bag. In a moment of frustration she forcefully tore the bag open and checked if the tip was clogged, it was not. On the way up to room 3A she had grabbed a few surgical knives, finely sharpened.
With a heap of stuff in her hand she rushed up to the 3rd floor. Step after step, breath after breath and contemplated using it on her sister. She knew that it was a prototype and was unsure of its properties.
Silence filled her head, the cries of people echoed in her ears. The ones crying are the families of the patients who had unfortunately passed. She did not know how to react if her sister had died. They had been through so much together. Memories poured into her head and a single tear made its way down her cheek.
"OW! Ah- it hurts!" the little girl cried.
"Yuri, Yuri! It's fine, I'm here," Miharu answered, hugging Yuriko tight within her arms. "Don't cry now I'm here." She cradled the young and injured Yuriko within her arms and crooned her until she stopped crying.
"Through and through the battle we fought;
The troubles we've always thought about~
You and I,
We sit there and sigh;
Together beneath stars and moon~
This trial will end near and soon,
Because we two will always be,
Together to the horizon till the edge of the sea~"
The song rang in her ears as she made her way to the back door of the surgical room. As she reached for the last step her feet slipped and all came crashing down her, the knives and the Life Remnant.
To her, everything was blurry. Her vision was stained crimson and her coat was dyed red. The sound of muffled voices and screams filled her ear. She tried to move but her body didn't respond to her command. Her eyelids became heavy and before she closed them she called out to her sister.
"Ne-chan please...don't leave me-"
A black void consumed her and silence fell. A long time passed before a familiar voice woke her up.
"La la laa la la la la laa~~"
