tormy clouds obscure the light of the moon and stars. The soaking rain falls as if all the dams have broken. The earth shakes from the rumbling thunder. Now and then, a bright flash illuminates the black sky. Every soul is safely tucked away safely because of the great storm... Everyone except Alana...
She gently pulls on the reins and strokes Daydream his cold and wet neck. "I'm sorry to send you through this storm. Daydream." "I know little one. I didn't complain though, did I". "I swear If we're not where we should be now" Alana whimpers. "Then I complain" Daydream mocks. The black leather bridle rattles loudly when he shakes his head. Alana scratches his mane comfortingly. "We did what Venlian said" she whispers contentedly when a wooden signpost appears. Curly letters spell; Lò mol.
"We're almost there Daydream" Alana whispers. Despite being satisfied that they got Lò mol, she is also exhausted. She hasn't slept in the last five days. Afraid that Hate will overpower her again in her sleep. Despite the fact that Daydream had ordered her to sleep several times, she refused. Each time someone was able to wake her in time, but now no one was there. She was really all alone now. What if she died in her sleep? Then everything would have been for nothing. "We found it. Daydream" Alana whispers. "Did you ever doubt it, little one?" "Never" she replies.
Lazily, Daydream walks down the dirt road, ignoring the chilly raging wind. Fascinated, Alana observes the finely finished lanterns that adorn the winding path. She must find the man discreetly. No one could know who she was. But how can she be discreet? She has no idea what he looks like. Who is he anyway? Does he know who Alana is? Venlian had informed her that he understood. As soon as she says the name Gmork he should know who she is. But how? Is he a third option? If the first two fail? Why draw up this plan? Why go to all that trouble if Jaspar was never going to tell her the truth? Why hadn't he told her if he knew that one-day Hate would find her? "Alana... Vampires." Daydream warns when Alana slips out of the saddle. Without answering Daydream, she takes the leather reins in her hand and knocks with all her remaining strength on the heavy gate.
Stunned, Alana looks at the small hatch that adorns the pale gate. It opens immediately after she knocked! Is the old man waiting behind the gate all day? The slender gatekeeper looks tensely at Daydream. Without a word, he drops his bronze eyes on Alana. "Yes," he finally grunts. Four gold teeth flashed into Alana's face. "I... em.. I. The inn" she stammers hesitantly. She waits patiently for the man to respond. When this doesn't happen, she wipes the wet hair out of her face and pulls herself together. "I want to spend the night," she says. "The inn is full" the man replies arrogantly and moves to close the hatch. "Wait" yells Alana louder as intended. Sighing, the man looks at Alana again. His silver beard sparkles in the dim lantern light. Alana groans softly. Her choice is gone. She has to admit it. She has to tell the truth. She's come too far to give up now. She cannot stand in front of a closed gate. At best, he knows that man. "I'm looking for someone". The guard looks at her with playful eyes. A smile curls around his narrow lips. "A man." "Really now," the guard asks, grinning. This is ridiculous, Alana thinks as she slowly loses her temper. "It's not what you think. He's... This is different." The gatekeeper chuckles. "Whatever you want baby." "No, it's... I don't really know him, but he knows me. Anyway. It's a long story and I've got a long journey behind me. Let's just say he's waiting for me. Please." The gatekeeper scratches his sharp nose and laughs. "So, you need help finding your man. Well, tell me who are you coming for?" "Well. he is called the captain. The old vampire frowns doubtfully and stares at Daydream again. Deep wrinkles appear on his pale head as he thinks deeply. "The captain" he murmurs softly and scratches his balding head. "You did say A now" Daydream says impatiently. "That's right" Alana stammers softly. "His name". She swallows for a moment before continuing. "Is Mauger."
"Mauger" yells the gate guard loudly. Shudders appeared throughout his body. As if Alana just said the name of the devil, he turns his head back. "Mauger" he shouts even louder. Impatient and afraid that the whole village will hear him, Alana moans. "Yeah but..." "Mauger" the guard repeats softly before she can finish her sentence. He stared absently at the ground. Alana shivers. Why is the man reacting so fiercely? Is there something wrong with Mauger? Is he a vampire? Is it safe to find the man? Maybe she doesn't need anyone? Doubt overcomes her. "I'm sorry" she begins and starts to walk away. Before she can turn around, the gate guard nods. He closes the hatch with a loud bang. As Alana turns to Daydream, the strong gate opens. Alana smiles gratefully and walks into the small village. "No turning back now" she whispers. "Strange man" says Daydream and follows her; "Look like real heroes... Vampires." Alana grins amusingly.
She casts her gaze suspiciously along the dark houses that adorn the sidewalk. The wet boulders beneath her gleam in the light of the wrought-iron lanterns. Long green weeds adorn next to the mossy sidewalks. Bravely she takes a deep breath and peers out into the dark street. Who am I fooling? I need him. And at the end. I have no choice. That's how it should be.
"Lady" stammers the gatekeeper and hesitantly continues when Alana looks at him. "I say this with all humility. Please, be careful of Mauger. You are just a simple Elf and my kind? Even my kind is smart enough to fear him. That man has no friends, only enemies." "I don't understand what you mean," she asks. "Something is said about deep waters. It applies here." Alana whimpers softly. "I don't have a choice. This is the way it should be," she replies. The old man nods in understanding. "You will find the inn in the first street on the left. I wish you good luck lady. I believe you will need it" he says after which he disappears into the wooden hut. Hesitatingly, Alana walks into the unkempt village. What the hell does he mean? If she must believe this man, Mauger seems terrible? Why are the almighty vampires afraid of him? Is it really this man that Venlian means?
A trio of young men, all dressed in dark leather outfits, smile seductively as Alana passes the group. Uncomfortable Alana greets them. A dark shadow reflects from the corner of her eye and disappears hastily into the grim streets. Deep in thought, she walks among the tall buildings. The terraced houses looked deserted and dark, but nothing could be further from the truth. No sign of life is visible behind the dark windows and yet Alana is closely watched through them. Shaking her head, she walks in the indicated direction. A round moon appears among the dark clouds, illuminating the mossy roofs. Alana walks in the direction indicated. "Charming village" mocks Daydream. Alana chuckles. "You read my mind". "You know it" answers Daydream.
She looks nervously at the wooden sign above her. The icy wind plays with the squeaking billboard causing the sign to flip back and forth. The screaming virgin "This is it Daydream", she whispers and strokes his neck. "As said before, wish me luck". Daydream neighs and pushes his nose against her arm. "Good luck little one". Without a reply, she hands the reins to the young groomsman and pushes against the creaking door.
Cheerful music and bright candlelight blows in her face. An inviting heat embraces her soaked body. The smell of freshly roasted pig teases her hungry stomach. A few men and women sit comfortably at the wooden tables with long benches, in groups of four or six. Most chat happily surrounded by pitchers of beer and piles of dried meat, while others laugh at things no one else can understand. Alana watches cautiously when a pair of men roar loudly as they play a game of dice.
With a pounding heart, she walked through the narrow passage. A duo abruptly interrupts their card game when she passes. Suddenly, Alana notices that these two aren't the only ones staring at her. She notices several eyes on her. Some young women are sitting in front of the crackling fire. Laughing, they whisper to each other and point to Alana. Uncomfortable with the number of lurking eyes, Alana makes her way to the ebony bar.
"Pardon me," she stammers as the fat innkeeper turns around. He looks deeply at Alana with his hooded dark red eyes.
On his thin white lips appears a soft smile, which is almost invisible because of his dark heavy mustache. it takes a few seconds before he nods. Sweat shined on his forehead. On his naked forearms appear some scars. Old ones and new ones through each other. He scrapes his troth and wipes his big hooked nose.
Then he says politely; "I'm sorry, Lady. I have no more rooms available." Before Alana can answer, he says; but if you are looking for accommodation, I can arrange something for you. "I'm sorry, that's not what I'm here for," Alana stutters, shaking her head. I'm looking for a person, not a room," she says softly.
The innkeeper nods and plays with the curled tips of his mustache. "Well," he says and continues; "We are all looking for someone". Some of the men around and laugh at his comment. Not again Alana thinks tormented. "It isn't like that" Alana replies irritated. "I'm looking for a... well, a man" "I thought so" the innkeeper laughs again. Alana lets out a sigh. "I already told you that this was different. And well... He... is expecting me. Kind of," she adds softly. The innkeeper smiles playfully. "Forgive me, I was only teasing," he says sincerely, and gives her a comforting look. "Maybe I can help you, this is a small village," he replies, stepping closer. "What is his name?" Alana hesitates for a moment. What if he starts shouting like that? Alana swallows. Her distrust and fear prevent her from pronouncing his name. "They call him the captain". Incomprehensibly the innkeeper repeats; "the captain". Deep wrinkles appear on his forehead as he thinks. "The captain" mumbles the older man next to her and looks deeply into the innkeeper's eyes. This man clearly knows who Alana means. Still the innkeeper looks confused at his customer. "Do you know who? The captain. I really don't know." The customer nods and moves his head. "You know... THE captain?" "You mean" stutters the innkeeper." Alana swallows fearfully. Come on Alana just say it. If you want to find him, say his name! Still hesitantly she mumbles; "I don't know exactly who he is or what he looks like. I just know... that his name..well that's Mauger" Alana finally sighs.
Like the gatekeeper, the innkeeper looks up in shock. She looks uncomfortably at the sudden attention that is thrown at her. From the moment his name rolls over her lips, everyone sitting at the counter stares at her abruptly. All the laughter and talk stops abruptly next to her. Angry but also frightened, looks are thrown at her. The man who was sitting quietly on the stool to her left, abruptly jumps up and leaves the inn. Coughing, a second man stands up. "Mauger" someone whispers gently. "Lady" the innkeeper starts stuttering and continues; "Are you sure it's Mauger?" Alana nods. "Take advice from an old bard," the elder man next to her begins and continues, "forget that name. Turn around and get out of here." "He's right," whispers the innkeeper. "Mauger means bad news". Alana moans softly. Why is everyone warning her for that man? Is he that dangerous? Why isn't she listening? Would he be dangerous to her too? Alana shakes her head. "I can't explain it, I don't want to explain it either, but I really need Mauger." Blowing, the innkeeper shakes his head. "I warned you." Alana looks at the tense man. "He probably saw you anyway from the moment you walked in," the innkeeper grumbles and takes a glass.
What's wrong with the captain? Is this really necessary? Sighing, the innkeeper lifts his finger and points to the corner of the inn. Alana nervously follows with her eyes the indicated direction. He points towards a man who is sitting all alone in a dark corner. His face is hidden in the shadows but Alana knows he is staring at her. She feels it. She mutters gratefully and walks at Mauger, knees trembling. "I'd say you're welcome, but then I'm lying" the innkeeper curses and turns around. Alana inhales nervously before going to the man. Come on, you can do this, she thinks bravely.
The captain's light tan face is hidden under the shadow of his brown leather three-quarter hat with matching black plume. A few black hair hang down his face, matching the tight black sideburns. His young face seems emotionless.
A mysterious look rests in his deep bulbous brown eye, the other was tucked under a black leather eye patch. Alana looks intently at his black leather vest with ornate brass buttons that hugs his muscular body. His narrow lips are tight together, shadowed by a thin black mustache and a triangular goatee.
Over his broad chest hangs a brown leather belt, matching his long brown cape.
What kind of captain he is, she thinks, surprised. Why does she feel like a death row inmate walking slowly to the gallows? With every step she takes in his direction, more and more people are watching her.
"Mauger" she asks doubtfully. Mauger doesn't answer. She waits uncomfortably. When Mauger still doesn't answer, she takes a deep breath and looks tensely at the collar of his blouse. "Gmork sends me," she says softly. A soft smile rests on Mauger's slender pale lips, but he still says nothing. What is that? Why is everyone acting so weird? Why is everyone afraid of him if he can't even answer? "Patience little one" comforts Daydream. Alana swallows and looks at the black belt that rests around his hips. He extended his hand covered with a leather glove to the seat in front of him.
Alana hesitated to take a seat in the chair. The belt around his chest has some tears. Age or violence? Sighing, she sits down on the chair. "So you're the girl" he finally says in a deep voice. Alana nods. She tries to place his accent, but it's something she's never heard before. It looks Danish. "Like I said Gmork, well to be honest, Gmork's son Venlian sent me." Alana stares intently at the black leather patch covering his eye socket.
He's not a man of many words, that much is clear. Mauger abruptly beckons the innkeeper and looks back at Alana. Alana looks up in surprise when the hurried innkeeper places a steaming plate in front of her. He deliberately ignores Mauger's gaze and disappears as quickly as he had come. Without taking his eyes off Alana, Mauger drinks from his cup. Gratefully, Alana stammers and eats the steaming meal, waiting for a word from Mauger. It had been days since she had eaten. With all the excitement she had forgotten how hungry she was. As soon as her plate is empty, Mauger nods. Not polite. More commanding. Suddenly he hurries to empty his cup and casually throws some coins on the table.
"Come" he orders and stands up. Hesitatingly, Alana looks at the black leather boots in which his brown trousers are neatly hidden. Those are the same boots as Hate, she notes. Her suspicions are fed when the innkeeper looks nervously at Mauger. Alana looks around in amazement. Everyone avoids him. They're scared of him! Did Gmork make a mistake? Startled, she jumps up when a strong hand grabs her wrist. She stares at the older woman suspiciously. "Child, don't trust him" she whispers. "What?" Alana asks cautiously. The old woman stares at Mauger trembling as he places his hand on hers, startled. Alana shivers under his touch. "You know I do not count to three Rosa" growls Mauger. Growling, Rosa removes her hand. "Don't do it Alana" she whispers again. "What?" Surprised that the woman knows her name, she bites her lip. "Come" Mauger orders again. This time, he is more arrogant and pushes Alana forward. Alana follows Mauger in silence. Obedient like a dog.
Once outside, Mauger lights a cigarette. "Do you have a horse?" he asks, blowing his smoke into the dark sky. Alana nods. "Get him" Mauger orders. Not a word escapes his throat when Alana reappears with Daydream. His gaze is frozen on the unicorn. Alana quickly follows Mauger. "He doesn't look so mean" comforts Daydream. The clatter of hooves on the cobblestones attracts curious eyes. However, they turn away as soon as they notice Mauger.
"Gmork said you're a captain" Alana asks to break the silence. Mauger looks amused at Alana. "That's right," he replies and leads her into a dark street. "Like a pirate", Alana asks curiously. Mauger shakes his head.
Alana nods in understanding and looks at the ornate gold sword on Mauger's hip. The lavishly finished buckle has not been spared details. "Here" Mauger orders and slides open the barn door. Alana looked surprised at the beautiful and luxurious mansion. This is most likely the most beautiful house in this entire village. White curtains adorn every window except the tower room. There, pink curtains flutter through the half-opened window.
Daydream shakes when Alana removes his saddle. Lovingly, she strokes his soft nose. I'll see you tomorrow friend. "I'll hold you to that" he growls. Alana laughs. "There's plenty of oats and water," Mauger says, throwing away the remains of his cigarette. Suddenly, in a hurry, he opens the heavy front door and lets Alana enter first. Alana smiles uncomfortably and walks into the warm house. She looks around curiously. A large round chandelier adorns the wooden ceiling. A red soft carpet covers the dark floor. On the walls are some decorative statues, souvenirs from different parts of the country. Or are they trophies?
With careful steps she walks down the hall, along the wide staircase to what she suspects is his living room.
Mauger looks around suspiciously before a smile curls on his lips. He closes the door with a thud. Four locks slide over the door. "Take a seat", he says invitingly and points to the wooden table with two chairs.
Alana carefully places herself on the wooden chair and looks at the thick white candle that adorns the center of the table. "So" she asks softly and looks around the warm spacious room. She looks with interest at the thick books that adorn a heavy dark cabinet, each decorated with their own unique cover and lettering.
Mauger places a cup in front of her and sits down on the chair in front of her. He stares at Alana and takes a sip from his cup. "So you're the girl," he finally asks again. Alana nods. "How do you know Jaspar?" she asks interested. When Mauger doesn't answer, she looks at the stone fireplace. "I assume Jaspar and Gmork are dead," Mauger asks rhetorically. Alana nods guiltily. "As long as you're wearing those kinds of clothes, he's going to recognize you," he says, looking at Alana's torn and stained dress. Frowning, Alana looks at her dress. "Do you want me to disguise myself?" Mauger nods. "If you want my help, that's one of the conditions." So he wants to help her! She smiles gently. "But I have no money for other clothes". "I'll take care of that," he replies. "And that stallion of yours?" "I can't leave daydream behind," she blows indignantly. Mauger shrugs. "I'm sorry, I'm just really attached to him," Alana apologizes. "He recognizes that beast from afar, but I understand." Alana nods gratefully. "He hasn't seen Daydream". Mauger smiles gently and takes a long gulp.
"Gmork told me you could help me? Would you know the way?". Mauger nods. "How long are we on the road?" "We have to make a short detour through the desert. The woods are impenetrable and most of it is life-threatening. Alana nods in understanding. "The safest way is to head south. Until you pass Enyal and then always west again through Enyal. This means we have to cross the country. I think a week or three," mutters Mauger. A week or three. That's so long Alana cringes.
Alana drinks carefully from her cup. She puts her cup down again and coughs. Mauger grins and takes her cup away. Chuckling, he fills a glass with water. "I see you could also use some help with learning how to drink," he smiles at Alana. "I'm only eighteen in three days, I don't even think I'm allowed to drink already." Mauger chuckles. "You can do whatever you want," he winks. Alana smiles warmly.
"Mauger, you've known Jaspar for a while, I guess?" Mauger nods. "When Hate ... Jaspar. Well before he killed him, It seemed like they knew each other.
Mauger frowns. "Jaspar is a dwarf, he finally mutters." He sighs briefly when she doesn't respond. "Dwarves follow Hate. It's been that way for years." Alana shivers. "So he was"... Mauger shakes his head. "Jaspar stabbed Hate in the back. Not literally, of course." Alana swallows. So that's what it was all about! Jasper had betrayed Hate! Mauger sighs. "Jaspar was unique. That's the least you can say about him," he hisses and rubs his chin. Alana smiles uncomfortably. "Have you ever heard of the witch Isobelle"? Mauger nods. When he stops talking about Isobelle, Alana takes a sip impatiently.
Just when she finally thought she'd get an answer to her questions. Why didn't anyone want to tell her who Isobelle really was. Was she the witch queen? "Why is everyone afraid of you? Because I'm terrible" he mocks. Alana smiles at Mauger. "I don't believe that," she replies. He looks up at her in amazement." "People are always afraid of something they don't understand." "That's true" Mauger sighs. He smiles and takes off his hat. Alana looks interested at his long black hair, neatly tied back in a ponytail "Mauger, what kind of captain are you?" Mauger smiles. "Those days are gone. I was a captain of the royal army. Now, now I'm nothing." "That's not true" replies Alana indignantly. "They've always told me you can be whatever you want to be." "Oh yes", Mauger grins and continues: "If I wanted to be a pony, I won't be one." Alana laughs, shaking her head. "You know what I mean", she chuckles. Mauger smiles, nodding. "Your accent" Alana asks suddenly and continues: "It's not from here". Mauger nods. Alana waits patiently for an answer, but soon realizes it won't come.
"Can you fight?" he suddenly asks. Alana shakes her head in shame. "I mean the basics? Maybe. But not really great." Mauger nods. Alana has a feeling he will soon change this.
"I'll show you the way to your bed", He points to the graceful wooden staircase. Alana hastily empties her glass and follows Mauger up the stairs.
He silently leads her to the second floor and opens a door. Alana looks up in surprise at the girls' room. "Wow, I didn't know." "I had a daughter" Mauger mumbles defeated. Alana looks at him comfortingly. "We're leaving in the morning," he announces, and heads down the stairs. Alana nods and closes the door behind her.
A smile curls on her lips when she sees the spacious soft bed. "Finally," she blows contentedly and lets herself fall on the soft mattress. Mauger is not as bad as everyone says she thinks with relief. Why was everyone acting so weird? Venlian was right. He's her best chance. Sighing, she closes her eyes and falls into a deep sleep. "Good night little one" echoes through her head just before she rolls off to sleep.
"Alana? Alana"? Alana slowly opens her eyes and licks her pink lips. The sun is already in the center. "Mauger I'm sorry" she begins, but stops abruptly as soon as she sees Hate. No, she whispers and crawls back. She looks up in shock when she bumps into a muscular man. Hate chuckles and keeps sitting. Alana looks around nervously, staring into Vengeance his dark gaze. Why did he take Vengeance? "Let go," she growls as Vengeance takes hold of her. Hate smiles softly. "I didn't think so" he whispers and strokes her jaw. "I still have something to finish with you, you arrogant bitch", he whispers and grabs her throat. "What did you think? That you could just get away? After your little trick?" Alana shivers. "No" she begs crying as he grabs her throat. Alana squeaks in fear as her lungs scream for breath. She whispers coughing; "Hate." "Hate please" she beeps. "I'm sorry" she cries.
Alana! Alana!" Alana opens her eyes abruptly and takes a deep breath. She coughs while Mauger taps her back gently. "Get dressed. We have to go", he orders and stands up. Alana nods coughing and sees Mauger walk out of the room. Panting she puts her hands on her sides. "Come on breathe Alana" she whispers to herself and takes a deep breath. Why did she go so far with him? Obviously Hate is fed up with her. Hcoughing,e wanted to strangle her in her sleep! Still panting, she takes the black leather pants that Mauger gave her. Would it work? If she's dressed up, can she effectively escape him? "Even if it's only temporary? Lost in thought, Alana puts on the dark blouse. Why does Mauger think this will help? She has to admit it's easier to drive and walk. Maybe he wanted to give Alana her best chance. Coughing she puts on the black boots and drops her heavy head in her hands, cursing herself "Idiot."
She walks into the living room and takes a seat at the table. Mauger quietly pushes a stone cup towards her and smiles. "Ready," he asks. She nods. Mauger drinks his cup in silence. "Did you lose your eye long ago?" Alana asks, interested. A playful smile rest on Mauger's lips. Alana swallows when she realizes he's not going to answer this. "How long did you knew Jasper?" "A while" Mauger replies vaguely. Alana nods. Why does he never answer properly? He's not a talker that's for sure. "You're an elf, aren't you?" Mauger nods. "I thought my pointy ears gave it away," he says sarcastically. "I thought elves couldn't have beard growth"? "Whoever told you that is an idiot." "Jaspar told me "She whispers. Mauger laughs amusedly. "Elves have beard growth, just a lot slower. You've seen Vengeance," he asks. Alana nods. "He probably saved up his beard all his life." "How long have you been saving for yours"? He answers softly; "eighteen years". "Have you ever met Hate?" "Long ago," he replies, drinking from his cup again. "You really do ask a lot of questions," he says suddenly. Alana smiles in shame and drinks from her cup. Alana's brain aches as the cold water slides down her throat. Although he doesn't like to talk and everyone has warned her about him, he is very helpful. Why would that be?
Before she can ask her question, he stands up and walks toward the kitchen. Surprised Alana looks up when he returns with a plaid filled with eggs, beans and bacon. "Eat up. You are going to need your strength" he says. Thankful Alana starts eating. "You aren't eating?" "I ate already. I'm an early riser" he says. Alana nods. "That necklace. Hide it better. I can see it hanging from here." Alana looks at the chain and pulls the cover of her blouse up. "If he sees you have that... Well, that would change his game." "His game?" Mauger nods. "You finish food, don't bother about the dishes. I'll start saddling. Meet me outside when you are done" he says and walks out. Alana bites at her bacon and nods. Hastily she finishes her food, feeling suddenly really scared and lonely. Mauger trusts her. Alone in his home... But in the end... Not like she would do anything. She can't risk it... He is her salvation.
Fast she wipes her mouth and stands up. She finishes her glass of water and walks toward the stables.
"Mauger" she asks. Startled she jumps up when he walks out of the stables, almost bumping into her. He smirks and hands her Daydream. "Sorry" she laughs. He doesn't answer. He just walks back into the stables. "Little one" greets Daydream. Alana kisses his nose and smiles. "Told you"She whispers and looks to Mauger who brings his horse outside. A beautiful ink-black horse, with long wavy manes and tail snickers. He climbs on the black leather saddle and nods to Alana. "Stay behind me. Keep your head down and don't speak." Alana nods. Mauger pokes his horse and off they go. He doesn't even look back to his home. Excited for this new part from her adventure she keeps her eyes on the captain.
Villagers jump in shock as the two animals rush through the streets. They stare nervously at Mauger. "Mauger" hisses an older man and watches the gatekeeper hastily open the gate.
Distrustfully, Katinka lifts her head when the heavy lock cracks. Silently, Jealousy opens the door and walks to Katinka. "Let go" she yells angrily as he grabs her. "Ssh" calms jealousy and places his arm around her slender torso. "Please" Katinka begs trembling. "Hate has asked for you" Jealousy says and pushes her out of the cell. "I don't know why, but that's where I'm taking you," he continues, closing the door behind him. "Hate" Katinka asks scared. Jealousy nods silently and pushes her up the marble stairs. "Jealousy" sounds in a loud voice behind him. Jealousy stops abruptly and looks over the iron railing into the spacious hall. "Hate is still busy" Vengeance begins and continues: "just push her into the little one's room". Jealousy nods. "The little one" Katinka asks, concerned. Jealousy laughs amusedly and opens the first door to their right. Without saying a word, he pushes her into the warm room. Katinka moans softly and scribbles straight. "Arrogant dude" she grumbles and looks at the boy leaning amusedly against the wooden bed. "You" she asks in surprise.
"Ho, ho" says Mauger and stops his horse. Alana looks at the blue sky and licks her lip. The warm sun lowers fast and almost disappears behind the green treetops. Mauger gets off his horse and symbols Alana to do the same. "We must stop here for the night. It is useless to drive on. We won't see anything and might get lost. Nights are darker as dark here, so close at the forest." Alana nods and follows Mauger to a pair of thick trees. His deep eyes scan the forest edge for any lurking danger. He nods to Alana and starts to remove the saddle from his horse. "Let me do it, get some firewood. Not too big, not too small but most important... Dry" he orders. Alana nods again, not sure what to say to him and starts wandering off. "Alana! Not too close in the forest." "Okay" Alana says and picks up some dry wood. While her mind races back to Katinka, Rodehanthe and everyone else she lost during the journey she gathers some dry sticks. She doesn't want to disappoint Mauger so she searches for the perfect firewood. She could hardly believe that everyone is afraid of Mauger. He was kind, and gentle. Okay, he didn't like her asking lots of questions and no, he isn't a talker, but that wasn't such a big deal. He was calm and respectful... At least till now. She must confess, she didn't really know the man. For the same thing... He was just putting on a show. But she trusts him. For now...
Happy with the firewood she gathered he starts to pile it up. "The secret of a good campfire is the center" he says, obviously trying to teach her something. He slowly piles the branches and looks at Alana. "Once you have that, the fire won't go out that easy. Unless you want it." Alana nods and pays close attention. She looks how he makes a fire and smiles. Out of his bag he grabs two tomatoes, a carrot and two pieces of meat wrapped in a light cloth. "Another secret is to think ahead" she asks jokingly. He smirks and looks to her. Without answering he puts everything on two sticks and hangs them above the fire. Alana stretches her legs, tired and excited about what Mauger is going to teach her also. But she has no time to let her mind wander of. He gives her a strong, long stick and stands up. "Come on" he says. Not sure what to do Alana stands up. Mauger smirks. "Show me your fight position." "Eh okay" she mumbles and grabs the stick with two hands. She places her feet in front of each other and holds her hands in front of her. Mauger smirks. "Good start" he says and walks slowly closer. "But Hate... wouldn't be Hate if he didn't abuse every weakness", he says and hooks his feet behind her leg. With a swift movement he pushes her to the floor. Groaning Alana falls on the sand. She hears Daydream chuckle in her head. Irritated she stands up and looks at Mauger again. "You have to place your left foot a bit before the other. Bend your knees just a little bit" he says and walks behind her. "And hold your one hand in front of your other" he says and slowly wraps his arms around her. Alana her heart beats like a madman in her chest when her back bumps into his chest. He whispers soft; "hold your hands like this" and pushes her hands a bit lower. "That's it" he whispers and looks at her face. He swallows and stands back in front of her. "Now, you know that Hate wears armor. But with the right blow you are able to cut through it. But before you can strike him successfully... You must learn to gain enough time. You are no match against Hate. He is trained, fast and strong. You will never defeat him... yet. But you can injure him, distract him or save time... You can defend yourself. Easily" he says and takes his stick. "When I do this" he says and slowly does an uppercut. "You must use your weapon and block it. While you block it... You easily can kick him between the legs. "Let's try that... Except for the kick" he blinks. Alana grins.
While the sun slowly disappears behind the thick treetops and grey mountains, Mauger teaches Alana to defend herself.
"Ah" she groans as his stick hits her shoulder. "Sorry" he says and looks concerned at her. Alana groans and kicks his leg. "Get him" says Daydream teasingly. "Ah" groans Mauger and pulls his leg back. Alana, excited by Daydreams comment, attacks Mauger. Laughingly he loses balance and they both fall to the ground. "Sorry" she laughs and gets off him. Mauger laughs and sits up. "I think you will be just fine" he laughs and looks at her. Alana grins. "Let's take a break for today. I think our dinner is more as done" he jokes. Alana forgot their food already! In silence they start eating, both of them with their thoughts someplace far away. "I could take him, I just didn't want to hurt him" Alana bitters in her mind against Daydream. "Of course," laughs Daydream. "We better get some rest" Mauger says and lays his saddle down. Alana nods and follows his example. "Thank you Mauger" she says. The captain doesn't answer. Alana softly sighs and closes her eyes.
"Alana.... It is time... Alana"
"Hm" asks Alana and slowly opens her eyes. "Alana.. It is time..."
"Time" she asks softly. "Time for what?"
The soft female voice talking to her changes abruptly into Hate his dangerous low voice.
"Time to die" he says. A loud growl follows.
Scared Alana opens her eyes. She breaths heavily and sits up. Mauger, who is already awake looks at her. "Alana" he asks. Alana swallows and tries to control her breath. "Alana" he asks worried. "I'm fine... It's okay" she whispers still filled with adrenaline. Mauger swallows and looks at the upcoming sun again. "Come here" he says. Groaning, Alana stands up. She walks to Mauger. "Sit" he orders like he is talking to a dog. Alana rubs her eyes, still tired, and sits down next to him. She slowly follows his gaze. Her heart skips a beat. Before her eyes, as if it were a colorful painting, there is a beautiful image. The sun slowly rises over the treetops, turning the gray sky orange-pink. The clouds are softly colored and birds fly up from the bare tree branches.
"I know you lost a lot of people, but this... This is something that you can still see. That's the gift. The real gift. Let's make sure that you won't lose that gift" he says and stands up. Alana takes a deep breath. She smiles softly. He is right... It is beautiful. And worth it. She stands up and follows him. He looks to her and nods. Smiling she nods back. Effortlessly he lifts himself into the saddle of his strong black stallion and moves forward. Alana follows his example, ready for a new day...
Hate bites his lip and groans. "My lord" begins Heinrich soft. Angry he looks at the boys in front of him. Children... nothing more... But that didn't matter for him. They were his slaves... He trained them! The reason they were still alive was because he needed them... But they continue to disappoint him lately. "Forgive us my Lord" begins Godfrey. "But they were already gone." "We searched the entire house. The vampires said that they left yesterday." Hate bites his lip. "Disappear" he growls low. The bandits nod and slowly walk away. Hate growls and throws the table through the room with a single-handed smack. Damn that woman! It started to annoy him that she always knew how to escape from his grasp... One way or another, And now she is with him... He cannot lose this battle... He cannot lose her. He must get to her... He must break her before she knows too much. "I know what to do" he whispers softly, and walks away.
"Mauger, Jaspar told me those boys were brothers. But Rogue, He... is Asian. How can they be brothers if they are so different?" Mauger sighs. "In a way, they are brothers. Orphanage brothers. They grew up together from toddlers as orphans in the same house. Hate loathed the village, and burned it to the ground. Killed everyone. But when he came to the orphanage, the headmaster suggested a trade. The five remaining children for his life. Of course, Hate took up on that offer. Only he didn't keep himself on the details of the deal. He killed the master. Took the children. He raised them as slaves, trained them." "Wow, I never know. That is amazingly sad." Mauger nods. "Do you know who also works for him?" Mauger swallows. "There are rumors." "Rumors?" "A vampire, a werewolf and a witch." "That sounds..." "Like a bad joke, I know" groans Mauger. Alana tried to hold her laugh. Mauger looks at her and smirks. "What" she asks. He shakes his head. "You remind me on someone." "Someone good" she asks. Mauger nods. Alana swallows. She can see in his eyes that he is hurt, deeper, as he admits. "Last run of the day" he says. Alana nods and sighs while she lets Daydream run behind his horse.
Katina swallows and closes her eyes. Once again she finds herself in a demon's bed. Once again, she finds herself in Vengeance his bed... As punishment for net telling Hate where Alana might be. What Alana her weakness is. What Jaspar told Alana. Is it all worth it? What if he finds her anyway? She groans soft when Vengeance nibbles her skin. His tight arm around her slender waist blocks out her air. A soft crying moan escapes her troth while he pushes harder every time. His heavy breathing betrays he is close. She just hopes that it all is over... Very soon. And with all, she means everything. Vengeance moans and lets his head hang on her neck. Tears escape Katina her eyes. "Ready to talk, or you want to prepare for round two" he whispers into her ear. Katinka swallows. "Drop dead" she whispers with a trembling voice. Vengeance chuckles. "I was hoping you would say that" he answers. He pushes Katinka on her back. "Amazing how much strength and power you have" he says and rubs her jaw. "But don't worry, we have more" he says and drops himself on her body. Katinka groans and closes her eyes. Unsure how long she can still take it, she hopes. She prays that Alana reaches the king very soon.
Alana groans while she gets off Daydream his back. Mauger chuckles. "Don't tell me you are stiff already?" Alana chuckles softly. "What if I do?" Mauger grins and away from his horse. He slowly unsaddles the horses while Alana searches for firewood. Just like yesterday, he makes a small fire. Only this time, he lets Alana a moment alone so he can go hunt. It doesn't take long before he returns with two bunnies. "That was fast" Alana says impressed. Mauger smiles. "It isn't so hard when you know what to look for" he says and skins the bunnies. Alana swallows and turns her head to the clouds. Mauger chuckles. "I'm gonna get some more firewood, says Alana and stands up. Mauger laughs soft. "Don't get too close to the trees." "Promise" answered Alana. A smile creeps on Mauger his lips while he prepares the meat on a sharp stick.
When she returns he throws a stick at her. Alana groans softly. She was stiff from yesterday's training and riding all day. But she also doesn't want to disappoint him. She nods on which he smirks. "Don't forget your feet" he says and taps her heels. Alana fast improves herself. "Good" he says. "Are you lefthanded?" Alana looks at her hands. "I.. Eh, think so." Mauger smiles. Move your left hand a bit higher. "Sorry" she says. "It is okay, good that we figured that out" he says and moves his sword up. "You are a fast learning" he says when Alana blocks his attack. "Only yesterday you couldn't do anything with a sword. Today you can defend yourself and tomorrow.. Tomorrow you might be a skilled fighter" he blinks. Alana huffs. "I wish" Mauger chuckles. "Only one mistake you keep making" he says and hooks his feet behind her heel. He drops her on the floor. "Control your balance with your feet. One foot before the other one, bend your knees a little." Alana nods and follows his advice.
The bunny flesh roasts softly while Alana and mauger practice their fight. Some curios forest animals come peeping through the trees at the sounds of the two fighters. While Daydream slowly finds himself rolling in a deep sleep Alana and Mauger keep practicing.
"Oof" blows Alana when she bumps her back into Mauger his chest. Mauger smiles soft. "It's okay" he says and looks into her eyes. He rubs a hair from between her lips. Alana her heart pounds heavily into her chest. Why it does that? Mauger swallows, his stick drops out of his hand. Without warning he drops his lips onto hers. Alana doesn't fight back, nor does she push away. She can't explain why. "Alana" asks Daydream but Alana pushes his voice out of her head. She drops her stick while Mauger places his hand on her face. Mauger intensifies his kiss and wraps his arms around her. Alana gasps when he pushes her back against the tree. He kisses her deeply and lets one hand slide towards her breast. Alana swallows while his lips slowly go down on her neck. "Mauger" she whispers. Mauger looks up into her eyes. He smiles softly. Her eyes were closed. She had given all control of him to her. Just what he wanted. He lets his fingers slide into her vest and softly strokes her nipples. She soft moans his name. Is she really ready to do this? Her first time? With him? Against a tree? But then again. She can't describe it. He just.. Has this power over her. As soon as their lips touched, She knew it.. He has this magical power over her. She can't control herself when she is around him. He turns her around and rubs her hair off of her neck. He slowly kisses her neck and lets his hand slide over her pants. Alana gasps as her bends her forwards. "Mauger" she whispers softly when Mauger enters her rather roughly. "Okay" asks Mauger with a husky voice. Alana nods and bites her lip. She grabs his hand and softly moans his name.
Hate growls one more time and bites open her wrist. "I do not have a moment" he roars. Tears stream over Katinka her jaws. "I need to.." "The only thing you need is to tell me where the fuck she is" he yells and looks at the young crying girl tied, to the chair. Blood runs from her neck and wrists. Blue and yellow spots cover her face. "I don't think you understand.. She is with someone very dangerous, and I do not have time to play your games today" he growls deep and grabs her jaws. "Someone dangerous for you? And you think I'm going to help you" laughs Katinka. Hate hisses furiously. He rips Katinka from the chair and throws her onto his bed. Katinka screams short when he grabs her and plants his teeth again into her skin.
"What do you think? A birthday drink" grins Mauger and looks at the small inn. Smoke escapes from the dark chimney. Alana smiles. "But I..." "Relax" Mauger laughs. "A soft bed, warm, decent food and beer? That does sound like birthday treats to me?" Alana grins. Mauger nods and leads his noble animal to the inn. Silently, he dismounts and hands the reins to the stableboy. Before Alana could follow his example, he had already walked in. Alana smiles and kisses Daydream's nose. "Happy birthday little one" he says lovingly.
The little inn is packed with travelers, some knights and villainous men. Mauger doesn't seem to mind the lurking glances and sits down silently at a table. Alana smiles uncomfortable and bites her lip. Mauger smiles soft. "You'll get used to it" he says. Alana swallows. She isn't even sure she wants to get used to it. She still can't believe what she did. Mauger seemed so different all off sudden. So.. gentle. Maybe some love is all what the captain needed. Her heart flutters when he touches her. Maybe some love is all she needed... She doubt somehow she made the right choice. But why wouldn't it. Something is nagging on her conscience.
But with the warm food, the excitement of beer and the happy music she gets over it faster as she imagined. Laughing with one of Mauger his remarks she almost spits out her beer. The sun has slowly disappeared and Alana had no idea of time anymore. But for the first time... She doesn't care. She doesn't even think about Hate. She doesn't feel scared nor tired anymore. She is just living in the moment. It almost feels like she is home again. The music of the winter festival, the smell of freshly tapped pints, the loud laughter of drunk man who are trying to escape their wives... It all reminds her of home and makes her feel comfortable... Without any worries at all... She looks to Mauger who had a conversation with a couple of elder man. He looks over at her and smirks mysteriously. He nods, gives them a couple of coins and walks back to her. "What was that about" she asks laughing. "I brought an alarm for saying" he winks. Alana looks surprised up. "An alarm" she scoffs. A drunk and energetic guy bump into her, making her spill the beer all over her. "Hey" Mauger scolds and grabs the boy's collar. Alana groans and looks into the young boy his terrified eyes. She sighs. "Mauger, it's okay" she says and grabs his hand. Mauger groans and removes his grip from the trembling boy. "I don't suppose you got another blouse" she laughs. Mauger nods. "Follow me" he orders. Alana smiles soft and follows the captain upstairs. He has a temper that's for sure.
Mauger throws his leather bag towards her and sighs. He rubs his eyes. "There's a black shirt in there" he says and walks into the spacious bathroom. "Thank you" Alana" says and hastily grabs the clean clothing. While she switches shirts a silver pendant draws her attention.
She looks over her shoulder before taking the silver cross necklace. The detailed silver jewelry piece is worked off with Celtic knots. It looks like the amulet given to a knight. Why he has a knight pendant? The middle part of the cross is decorated with a round breastplate. On the centerpiece adorns a red cross with Latin letters around it. The silver chain is covered with old blood stains. She slowly turns it around. Her heart stops for a moment... In the silver is a name engraved. Reki
Reki... This means... This is Reki his necklace? Mauger... Mauger is lying to her.
She turns quickly but Mauger was faster. He snook up to her, silent as a cat. He hastily takes her head and bumps it against the wall.
"Alana" she hears loudly before everything turns black.
Afraid Katinka looks up when the light-colored wooden door opens. Exhausted she rubs her eyes and swallows. Her blurry sight reveals Hate his dark coat. "You bastard" she curses under her breath. Hate chuckles. "You have no idea" he whispers and pulls her up. "No" Katinka groans and tries to fight his strong hands. Again, Hate chuckles. "I'm sorry, you'll be stuck with me for a while... The little one has a job to do." "No" Katinka whispers and looks at the little boy, sitting on the bed with a big grin. "Don't do this to her, I beg you. I'll..." "You'll what" whispers Hate and looks in her eyes, a mean smile on his lips. Katinka swallows. "Please, don't. Don't" she screams while he pulls her chuckling away. "Don't do this to her!!!"
Groaning Alana lifts her head. The ropes around her slender body creak loudly when she moves. She bites the rope between her teeth and looks at Mauger. "Alana" soothes Daydream. "It's better that you don't move too much," Mauger says amusedly and continues; "The ropes get tighter if you do."
Alana hastily observes her surroundings and swallows. Mauger had taken her to the dark edge of the forest. Why? The thick trunk he's tied her against pricks her back.
He slowly stands up and walks toward Alana. Alana turns her head scared as he strokes her jaw. "It's true, you look a lot like her." A teasing smile appears on his lips. "But you have better breasts" he grins and squeezes her breast. Hopelessly Alana tries to escape from the captain but the ropes around her body are too tight. She squeaks and tries to pronounce his name as he strokes her nipple. "To answer your question" he begins and rubs her breast again. "It's been years since I met your father. He saved her." jokes Mauger. He takes the hat off his head before continuing. "It was a false trick with which he could win. The duel that cost my eye". Slowly he takes the dagger from his belt. Tears sparkle in Alana's eyes as he comes closer again. "Now, after all these years I have a chance for revenge. You see Alana, I can't pass up that chance. Especially not for a girl" he winks. Alana shakes her head as he slides his hands over her hip. "Shh" he sighs as she wails softly. He gently kisses her neck.
"I have to lure him you see. Hate is someone that never appears anywhere without reason.
You know what the good thing about living in a vampire town... You learn so much about evil things. And in this case... about Hate. His weakness. His missions... His reasons. And you my sweet Alana... Are his weakness." Alana shakes her head pleadingly. How could Jasper ever trust this man? And Gmork? Would they have known how false and cowardly he is? Why does he have to use her? She never did anything wrong to him. She loved him! He took her virginity for goddess's sake! "I heard he marked you. That means he's connected to you." Mauger walks back to the campfire and picks up his bottle. "He senses when you're scared and that's exactly what I want you to be in a moment. Scared." Mauger laughs ominously. "When you are afraid, he will come. Like a mouse to cheese." Silently he warms the point of his dagger in the fire. Mauger takes a long gulp from his bottle and walks back to Alana.
"No" Alana begs under the ropes. A smile appears on his lips as he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. "You see, I don't want to hurt you. But if you don't leave me a choice. Well," he chuckles. Alana squirms fearfully between the ropes as he walks over to her. "Come on Alana. This will all be over soon, beg him. Call his name in your mind. He'll hear it. Beg him to come to rescue you. Do that for me and I might let you go," Mauger grins. Tears roll down Alana's jaw as Mauger kisses her neck. Gently his hand slides down her thigh while his other hand rests on her breast. Panicking, Alana closes her eyes when Mauger opens her pants. His thumb rubs her nipple. No this cannot happen. Not him too. "I normally don't do this" Mauger whispers and continues; "You're nineteen years younger than me. But let's just say this is your fault, besides you didn't seem to mind yesterday evening" he winks. Sobbing, Alana drops her head against the thick trunk. There is no escaping it. Mauger is too strong and the ropes too tight. And why? Because he has a problem with Hate? For revenge? She knew Mauger was bad news from the moment she spoke to the gatekeeper. Now she knows why everyone was afraid of the man. It's just like the gatekeeper said, he only knows enemies. Alana whimpers hopelessly and closes her eyes as he rubs her intimately. "Come on Alana", he whispers and kisses her neck again. "It's not hard, nor is it much to ask. But I warn you. I'm going to enjoy this more than you." "No, please Mauger" she begs through the rope. Alana opens her eyes abruptly when she feels his penis penetrate. Why did she trust Mauger? Why couldn't she just travel on as everyone told her? Everyone warned her about him. Why couldn't she just listen? Time seemed to crawl by as tears streamed from Alana's eyes. Pain burns in her sides when Mauger pushes deeper. Over and over. She places her teeth on the rope and looks broken to the dark sky. Listening to his heavy breathing and soft moaning her thoughts slide back to Rodehanthe...
Trembling, Alana whimpers as Mauger rests his head on her shoulder. Accompanied by a groaning moan, he trembles and lifts his head. Satisfied he blows and pulls himself out of her. "Lovely Alana" he whispers and rubs her breast again. He politely fashions her clothes and kisses her cheek.
"Now time for the real work", he whispers and takes a step back."
Maybe I should make you scream" Mauger mocks and removes the thick cord between Alana's teeth. "You don't understand" Alana sobs. Mauger looks at her with a grin. "Please do tell" he teases and takes a step back. "He doesn't care for me; he will never come when I ask him." Mauger laughs loudly and wipes a tear from Alana's jaw. "That's what you think. If so, then tell me. Why are you still alive? Not because you're saved. No, because he wanted to. You see, I've been chasing your father for a while, I've been trying to learn to know his way of thinking. In other words, his way of working." Alana looks intently at Mauger. "I know by now that if Hate wants you dead, you can't escape it. You just die. Easy. And if he wanted you dead you would have been buried for a while." Alana whimpers. She knows he's right. Despite the countless opportunities he had, she was still alive. Why? Why did he spare her every time? Does he see her as a Toy? Or was it more? Mauger smiles and takes the heated dagger from the fire.
"Believe me when I say this hurts," he mocks, placing the glowing blade against Alana's sternum. Alana closes her eyes. Tears roll down her cheeks as she screams." Stop" she begs, crying. Mauger chuckles. "Beg him" he commands again, holding the knife to her neck. Alana tries to pull her neck away, but he is too strong.
Hopelessly, she drops her head against Mauger's shoulder. Mauger rubs her head gently. "Shh" he whispers and massages her shoulder. "Why?" Alana sobs. "I already told you," replies Mauger. "I've waited so long to take revenge on him". "Why did you betray Jaspar and Gmork"? Mauger smiles softly and looks intently at Alana. He answers; "Finally the right question. To be honest, Gmork was an idiot, just like Jaspar." Alana looks up at the captain in surprise.
"I don't have to save you. You don't mean anything to me. I'm actually sorry I didn't kill your mother when I had the chance. Just like your father. The only reason that I agreed to the saving plan was that I could use you, it's nothing personal. but I've waited years for the opportunity to take revenge. Jaspar and Gmork wanted to hide you from him. They believed he would never find you unless you knew who you really were. Still, they came up with an emergency plan. When Hate would find you, the first shelter was of course Jaspar. When Jaspar was killed, you went to Gmork and then to me. I'm genuinely glad Jaspar and Gmork failed, otherwise I never would have had this chance." "Why aren't you a captain anymore?" she asks angrily. Mauger sniffs. I was an honorary captain. I thought I was doing the right thing. Kill witches, defeat the bad. Then I learned about a book, so powerful that it could grant anything you want. Because of that, I met your parents. He cut out my eye. The king's men apparently don't believe that a one-eyed can lead their army. I lost everything. My home, my family. His voice gets louder and louder with every word. Angrily he stomps on the floor. And now?! Now he will feel what that is like! Alana sighs softly and lifts her head." I'm sorry" she whispers. Mauger looks at her incomprehensibly. "You have not only lost your eye because of him but also your heart". Mauger grins and walks back to his bottle of liquor. Alana lowers her head with a whimper. "Oh Hate, why didn't you just kill me when you had a chance. For the first time ever, she thinks about Hate with a heavy heart... She doesn't exactly know why she is thinking about him, but she really would love to see him right now. She would even feel a little bit happy when he appeared in front of her. Even hearing his voice would help... why she doesn't know but she just wants it to be over. Sighing she bites her lip.
She lifts her head in surprise. The burning ropes on her skin slowly sink.
She stares incomprehensibly into Heinrich's deep, glassy eyes. She doesn't know whether to be happy or scared. But who should she fear the most? Heinrich or Mauger?
What is Heinrich doing here? Is it a coincidence or did he send them?
But why? Mauger was telling the truth? Without saying anything, he pulls Alana behind his strong body. Alana looks lost in thought at the holes that adorn the bottom of his cape
Cursing Mauger straightens his back. "Alana," he asks hesitantly. A smile curls around his lips. "Where are you jerk?" he whispers amused.
Alana shudders as he comes closer. Heinrich looks at her carefully and soothes her. He places his finger on her lips and rubs her upper arm.
"Alana" Mauger asks teasingly. "This is cowardice, even for you Hate" he shouts angrily. He turns around laughing. However, the laugh disappears as quickly as it came.
"This is unexpected" he mocks and stares at Godfrey. "He sends his slaves." "Go home lad" mocks Mauger. "Here's the only loss for you. I'm waiting for someone else." "Sorry, I can't" replies Godfrey politely and aims his weapon. Mauger laughs. "Well, I could always use some training" he jokes and takes his sword. He points the beautiful weapon at Godfrey his chest. Before Mauger can use his weapon, he takes a surprise attack from Wolfgang. Rock hard both boys land on the ground. Cursing, Mauger dodges Albrecht's weapon and kicks the latter. "Cowards" insults Mauger and slowly walks backward from Rogue sneaking out of the bushes. He must admit, the bandits had taken him by surprise. He has no way out.
A mocked smile appears on his lips. He abruptly punches Rogue in the groin, turns away from Wolfgang, and grabs Albrecht by the wrists.
Groaning, Albrecht tries to tear his arm loose, but it's hopeless. The poor boy breaks his arm as Mauger drags him against him. Wolfgang stares at Mauger with a burning anger in his eyes. He lets his gaze avert for a moment at Godfrey, who hesitantly takes a step back. He nods to Rogue who follows his lead. Mauger chuckles amusedly. So, he was right, the boys' weakness is each other.
"Let him go" orders, Godfrey. Mauger sniffs amusedly and places his sword on Albrecht's throat. "You have one minute. Where's Hate?" "Hate is busy" Wolfgang replies arrogantly. Mauger laughs. "Too busy to save his own daughter? Or as the situation is right now; his servant?" Albrecht groans as Mauger drags him back. "Let go of my brother" orders Godfrey again. Mauger tightens his grip around Albrecht and looks at him intently. A smile curls around his lips." Well, well," Mauger mocks. "Little deceiver" he whispers in Albrecht's ear. Albrecht his chest goes fast up and down. He swallows nervously. Panic appeared in his eyes. Albrecht growls cautiously. Nervously, Godfrey beckons his brother, Wolfgang. "I have all the time" Mauger laughs. "I won't let go until I have what I want," Godfrey growls softly between his teeth. "Hate is busy with other matters. He sent us. Let him go! Right now!" Mauger chuckles. "Him," he says rhetorically. "I don't know what I'd most like to do right now. Kill your... brother in exchange for Hate. Or Alana. Or give your little secret to Hate and see what he says about it. Godfrey swallows and sighs. "Please... We just... We are just trying to survive okay" whispers Godfrey. Mauger swallows. A disturbing look appears in his eyes.
But he has no time to think. A scream behind him steals his attention. He turns around and sees Heinrich with Alana in his hands. "A trade," he says. Mauger smirks. "So that's how it is now." Alana swallows afraid and squirms in Heinrich his hands. "Push Alana towards me and I'll let go of this one," Mauger says. Heinrich chuckles. "I wasn't born yesterday." "Neither was I" Mauger says.
All of sudden he groans and falls to his knees. "Thank you, Heinrich," says Rogue and takes a step backward. He used Mauger as his distraction and smacked him on the neck. "You okay," asks Godfrey worried, and kneels next to his brother. Albrecht nods and gets up.
Angry Heinrich turns to Alana and looks at her burn marks. "That bastard better," he says but his sentence gets interrupted by Godfrey who cries his brother's name out. Wolf" roars Godfried. To everyone's surprise, Mauger jumps up abruptly and throws young Wolfgang to the ground. His chest hits the frozen forest floor rock hard. "So" Mauger grumbles and drags Wolfgang up. "Where were we? Different brother, same effect?" "Wolf," asks Godfrey cautiously. Mauger lowers his gaze anxiously to the squeaking and coughing boy. The boy, held tightly by his collar by Mauger, doesn't even try to escape. "For heaven's sake," he curses and throws Wolfgang down again. "Where's Hate, I'll choke him. I swear." he roars and places his foot on the boy's chest." Godfrey swallows. Please let me help my little brother" Godfrey begs and looks again at Wolfgang who hyperventilates and is trying to sit up. Mauger grits his teeth firmly. He looks at Alana for a moment. "Hate" he growls and points his weapon at Godfrey. "Fuck this" groans Rogue and attacks Mauger once more. Mauger groans and grabs his dagger hastily. While Godfrey tries to help Wolfgang with breathing, Rogue and Mauger are wrestling for the dagger and most of all, control over each other. Heinrich puts Alana protective behind him when Mauger comes too close. It looks like a low number of seconds before Mauger does the worst... He slides his dagger down Rogue's throat. "Rogue" gasps Albrecht shocked. Heinrich stops breathing when Mauger slowly stands up. "Rogue" roars Godfrey and grabs the boy who slowly falls on his back. Pearly blood flows from Rogue's throat. Alana takes a deep breath. She finds the robbers annoying, and especially evil but this... nobody deserved this. They're just kids after all.
Rogue" whispers Godfrey and holds the dying boy in his arms. "God.." he shrieks. Afraid tears bubble in his eyes. "Sst" soothes Godfrey. A single tear falls out of the corner of his eye. "It will be okay, don't worry Rogue. All will be okay..." Rogue gasps and swallows. He tries to breathe but his cut open troth prevents him. "Please" he begs. "Rogue" whispers Godfrey. Heinrich releases Alana and kneels down next to his brother. "Rogue" whispers Albrecht. Slowly Rogue dies... His breath stocks, his pulse stops... His soul left his heart...
Heinrich turns his head for Mauger, rage bubbling in his heart but Mauger... has escaped...
"No" Alana shrieks. Mauger hastily pulls her with him. "Let go of me" she groans. Mauger stops and looks into her eyes. "You want to live little girl? Cause Hate won't stop just cause you ask. Okay?" Alana swallows. "Trust me... Even after all... I'm the best you got" he jokes. Alana swallows. "That's right... Hate won't stop just because I ask" she groans. "You thought me that, remember? In the woods?" She hastily kicks his leg. Mauger groans. "Alana" he curses when she hastily runs from him. "He will find you! You'll never make it alive" he roars angrily. "Just hope I'll find you before he does" he grinds between his teeth.
Hastily Alana runs over the wet grass. "Daydream" she shouts. "I'm here little one" she hears his comforting voice. Looking over her shoulder she runs back towards the inn. Fast heavy breaths escape her lips. Cursing she falls down. Blood runs over her spine. She hastily crawls to her knees and stands up again. "NO" she shouts when Mauger grasps her hair. "Quit it" he yells and places his arm around her waist. He pulls her towards the inn. "No, let go" she groans. Mauger kicks in the door and pulls her inside. The innkeeper looks surprised at them. "What in the Goddess's name" he curses. Mauger throws some coins at him without any word. The innkeeper swallows. "Goddess is with you," he says hastily and picks up the gold. "No, please" Alana begs. Mauger hastily takes a chair and pushes Alana on it. "A, a" he says and pushes her back when she wants to stand up. "Let go of me you monster" she roars. Mauger chuckles and places his strong hand around her throat. "Alana... You are more like your mother than you think... You have the same fire. The same courage. But that didn't save her did it" he jokes. Alana bites her lip and looks into his eye. She makes one more attempt for escaping. Hastily she spits in his face and kicks between his legs. Mauger groans and wipes his face.
Her heart rages in her chest, her legs tremble, and her sight is blurry because of the tears but all of that doesn't matter now... The pain... The fear... it feeds her. "I'm in the second stable, come to me little one."
Afraid Alana opens the door. She slabs Mauger his hand away and... bumps two strong hands. Afraid she looks up into the burning sunlight... A young man placed his hands on her shoulders... She knows this boy... Rodehanthe! Her heart rages in her chest as she looks stunned at the blacksmith. Tears run over her cheeks. "Come" he orders and pulls her hastily behind him. Mauger chuckles and looks at the boy who hastily closes the door again... He knows this boy... He saw him before... A long time ago... He slowly looks over his shoulder.
"Hello Hate" Mauger mutters with a smile. Hate smiles and calmly walks over to Mauger. "Why did you come?" Mauger asks. "Why do you think?" replies Hate to which Mauger grins. "You insult my daughter. You pay for it. No one touches Alana... Except me." "Or what?" "I was hoping for that answer" grins Hate. "You and I both" laughs Mauger and turns around. Hate sniffs amused. "I don't expect you to go down without a fight," Hate says rhetorically. "If you insist," Mauger laughs and takes his long graceful sword. Hate laughs and takes his sword too. "Of course," he replies mockingly and stands on guard like Mauger. Mauger sighs and takes off his hat. Hate waits patiently for Mauger to start the attack with an uppercut. "Ready to die" asks Hate teasingly and blocks Mauger's attack. Mauger grins. "I can ask the same question" he mocks, grinning and blocks Hate's horizontal stab. The sound of metal-on-metal blares loudly through the warm inn while the two gentlemen engage in an exciting duel.
Hate growls when Mauger slams the knob of his sword against his face. "If you want to play it that way," he laughs and brutally attacks Mauger. Mauger hisses annoyed when Hate pushes him down. He grunts to avoid Hate's vertical stab and jumps back up. Hate quickly jumps onto the leather couch as Mauger approaches. "You'll never be good enough" laughs Hate. "Your daughter said otherwise" Mauger whispers, pushing hard against Hate's weapon. Hate growls deeply and grabs Mauger's hand. He brutally bangs his head against the wall and rushes past Mauger. "Then she was wrong" laughs Hate and continues after Mauger blocks his uppercut. "Give it up, give her up," Mauger orders, blocking Hate's sting. "I'll never give up; I'll always be around her. Closer than she hopes," he winks, blocking Mauger's attack. Cheatingly Mauger kicks Hate in the stomach, whereupon Hate coughs and steps back. With a smile, Mauger uses his distraction and cuts across his chest. A few quick blows are dealt again, after which Mauger hits Hate hard. "Oh, you thought it would be easy right? That I was weak?" Hate blows irritated and hits Mauger. He quickly takes his weapon back. Mauger glances at the table and arrogantly kicks the wooden chair at Hate." I haven't found a challenging opponent in a long time. You're quite funny," laughs Mauger. "Are you going to talk me to death or are you going to fight?" Hate asks sarcastically to which Mauger laughs.
Mauger waits patiently for Hate to attack again. He laughs viciously as he cuts an oblique shorter cut in Hate's inky surcoat. Mauger snarls at him when Hate attacks his head and punches him in the stomach. Hate growls for a moment and kicks Mauger back. He falls over the second wooden chair. Hate waits patiently for Mauger to scramble up before attacking again with an uppercut. Mauger rushes off and grabs Hate from behind. Angry, Hate tries to break free when Mauger takes a short sword and shoves it against Hate his throat. Hate forcefully pushes his hand toward the second weapon and elbows Mauger in the face. Mauger growls and falls on his back. Hate smiles amusedly and bends over Mauger. "Did you think it would be easier?" he mocks and holds his sword to Mauger. "Easier" Mauger chuckles and kicks Hate with both feet before jumping straight. Hate growls angrily when Mauger thrusts his weapon into his shoulder. Growling, he pushes Mauger down and holds his weapon back to his throat. Mauger grunts and abruptly pushes Hate back. While Hate tries to regain his balance, Mauger makes another attack on Hate. Hate lays its hand on Mauger's eye. He hastily uses the distraction and pushes Mauger away, after which they continue dueling again. Wickedly, Mauger hits Hate on the nose, causing him to fall and bump his back into the cabinet.
Mauger hastily puts his arm around Hate's neck and pulls him back from the falling cupboard. Their weapons land clattering loudly on the floor. The boys land on the ground with a thump. Hate growls and slowly creeps away from Mauger. Swearing inaudibly, he straightens himself at the wooden dining table and coughs deeply. Mauger moans and straightens himself. He stares Hate into his dark eyes. Mauger glances at Hate and throws his dagger at the possessed warrior. Hate curses when the dagger penetrates his hand. Mauger quickly jumps across the wooden table to Hate as he pulls the dagger from his hand. "Punk" Hate hisses angrily and avoids Mauger's blow.
Mauger grabs Hate's fist and punches him in the face again. Mauger rushes to dodge his fist and punches him relentlessly in the eye. Blowing, Mauger grabs Hate by the arm when he wants to strike again and turns him onto his back with full force. "Give it up," Mauger whispers teasingly, trying to hold on to Hate. "Never" growls Hate and pulls Mauger to the ground. With a loud thud, Mauger lands against the wooden chair on which Hate lifts him over his shoulder. He throws Mauger brutally against the wall. However, Mauger jumps up super-fast and the wild fight continues. Mauger grabs Hate's throat and punches him in the stomach. When Hate falls to his knees, coughing, he bumps his elbow against the knight's back. Blowing, he runs to his sword, but Hate is faster. He grabs Mauger again and throws him hard on the table which breaks in two. Mauger moans, coughing, and turns slowly on his side. "Give it up," growls Hate and grabs the captain again by the shoulders. "Never" Mauger growls and tries to get away.
Hate chuckles. "I was hoping you'd say that" he replies and throws the man down again. Mauger turns on his hands and knees, upon which Hate kicks his stomach. "I'm sorry Captain" Hate jokes and kicks him again, causing Mauger to roll onto his side coughing. "But it looks like you're getting knocked out for the second time," laughs Hate. Mauger growls furiously and jumps up. Hate takes Mauger's fist as he attacks him again, wrapping his arms around his throat. Mauger tries to break free, but Hate is too strong. Hate growls when Mauger grabs a plate from the bar and slaps it on Hate's head. Hate hurries up the boy and slams his back against the glass case. Blood oozes from Mauger's shoulder as Hate again wraps his arms around his throat and tosses him onto the wooden table.
Dizzy,he kicks Hate with both legs when he tries to grab it again. He crawls up moaningly. Hate growls and grabs the captain with his ponytail. Mauger angrily curses and squirms out of Hate's arms. He fights back strongly. Hate, however, grabs him again by the leather cloth on his shoulders and throws him hard on the wooden floor. Mauger remains dazed. Panting, Hate steps back. "I must say you are a challenge," grins Hate and grabs Mauger again. When Mauger unexpectedly hits his temples, Hate falls to his knees. Mauger hits his knee against Hate's nose and bends forward." You too" he says with a grin. Hate laughs and grabs Mauger's calf. He ruthlessly pulls Mauger to the ground and stands up. He places his arm around Mauger's throat. "Sleep" he hisses and dodges his fist. Searching for breath, he tries to break free, but Hate is too strong. Hate growls when Mauger scratches his jaw open.
When Mauger slowly stops groaning and becomes motionless in his arms, Hate lets him fall to the ground with a sigh. He smiles viciously and lifts him up by the shoulders. Secretly, Mauger grabs a piece of glass from the ground. With a powerful thrust, Mauger pushes the glass into his neck. Hate puts his hand on the heavily bleeding wound and steps back. Arrogantly, Mauger spits blood from his mouth and pounds Hate into his stomach. Coughing, Hate falls to his hands and knees. Mauger kicks him in the stomach again. "As I promised," Mauger coughs as Hate falls unconscious.
Mauger jumps up in surprise when Vengeance grabs his shoulder. "Where the hell you come from?" he shouts cursing and defending himself against the demon that stalked him. "Hell" smiles Vengeance and hits Mauger on his heavily bleeding face. Mauger growls annoyed and makes a valiant attack on Vengeance
"Hate" whispers Fear and squats next to Hate. Greed gently holds his hand on Hate's wound and watches the fighting duo. "We have to get him out of here," he whispers to Fear, who nods in understanding. She looks up nervously as the sound of breaking glass reverberates through the inn. More and more curious people line up around the closed in hoping to catch a glimpse of the commotion.
Startled, they jump when the front door is pushed open by Mauger's back." Mauger turns to his hands and knees coughing and crawls over the muddy ground away from the building.
A whisper echoes through the audience as Vengeance appears in the doorway. He smiles and follows the crawling Mauger. "What did you think", he shouts with a grin and grabs his ankle. He drags Mauger across the ground towards him again. Mauger growls and kicks the young demon in the nose. Vengeance curses and rushes straight again. "Hate was right, you're a little brat" growls Vengeance.
Mauger looks relentlessly into his dark eyes and grabs a rock from the ground. Without hesitation, he beats on Vengeance his templates. The crowd hisses and whispers in alarm as Vengeance falls on Mauger. Moaning, he pushes Vengeance away and then crawls away again. Blowing, he sits on his knees and wipes the blood from his lip. "Captain, what the hell" a young woman whispers softly and looks at the bleeding captain. Mauger stands up and shakes his head. Staggering, he walks to the wooden water trough and washes his hands." Unbelievable," a man mutters, shaking his head. "How can one man defeat Hate and Vengeance?" an elderly woman exclaims in shock. Mauger laughs amusedly and straightens himself. He turns around in surprise.
Startled, the audience shouts when Jealousy appears. Firmly he grabs Mauger and throws him to the ground. Mauger moans and angrily looks at the young demon." Unbelievable," he mumbles angrily and turns around. Jealousy looks at the captain and walks past him. He waits patiently for Mauger to scramble up. Coughing, he pulls himself up on the hard object to his right. He looks up in surprise. The hard object turns out to be someone's leg. Staring at Mauger, Anger raises an eyebrow, causing the crowd to laugh.
Startled, he jumps back and looks at the two demons in front of him. Mauger casts his gaze to Vengeance his weapon and looks at Anger again. "Dare it" threatens Anger. With a smooth dive, Mauger jumps to the weapon of Vengeance. "Damn!" Mauger swears. He doesn't know where the dangerous falcon suddenly came from, but the huge beast scratched his hand open before he knew it.
Anger chuckles and crosses his arms. Staring at the falcon that lands smoothly on the dirty ground, Mauger jumps up. What are you up to with that, Anger asks softly, looking amused at Vengeance his weapon? What happened to Hate asks Anger and looks at Jealousy. Jealousy looks concerned at the house.
Fear runs outside of the house. Jealousy looks at Fear. "Blood" she blows. Jealousy looks at the crowd. "Are there any volunteers or do I have to select someone?" Anger shouts loudly. Collectively, the public disperses. Anger grins and walks toward the onlookers. Bravely, Mauger jumps between the onlookers and the demon. "Are you offering," Anger threatens? Mauger frowns and punches Anger in the stomach." Mauger, what are you doing" whispers a young vampire woman.
"Run" Mauger replies softly. "Make sure you get away, but not if you want to be his lunch." The vampire looks at him in surprise. "Despite everything, are you protecting... us?" When Mauger doesn't answer, she smiles and kisses his bloody jaw. "Goddess is with you", she replies softly and quickly turns her around. One last time the people nod to Mauger after which they flee.
Puzzled, Mauger looks at the helpless woman who screams in fear. "Come on," growls Fear and drags the young woman into the house. Mauger curses inaudibly. "I didn't think so" growls Anger and stops Mauger who wants to walk towards her. Jealousy relentlessly throws Mauger to the ground. "You die now" grumbles jealously. Jealousy kicks Mauger in the stomach again. Angry, he grabs Mauger by the collar and the leather on his back. "Punk" hisses Jealousy and throws Mauger to the ground. After a hard blow with his head against the trough, Mauger falls unconscious.
Anger nods and grins at Jealousy. The two demons straighten Vengeance his chest. Laughing, they press his head into the cold water.
With a deep breath, Vengeance lifts his head. "What?" he curses and looks at Jealousy. Anger laughs amusedly and slaps Vengeance on his shoulder twice. "Where's Hate" groans Vengeance and stands up. "Inside" replies Anger and walks inside.
He looks silently at Fear who holds the unconscious girl her bleeding neck to Hate's lips. "Fought hard" Jealousy laughs amusedly and looks at the battered inn. Greed nods and stands up. "And," Jealousy asks. "It takes a while for him to get back on his feet. He's lost a lot of blood." Jealousy nods. "We'll wait outside," he replies and walks out again.
Jealousy grins and looks at the unconscious Mauger. "What the hell are we going to do with him"? "I do have some ideas" groans Vengeance to which the demons laugh.
"My Lord" whispers jealousy as Hate walks out the door. Hate looks at Mauger in silence. "Is he dead?" he asks coldly. "No" sighs Greed. "Unfortunately," Vengeance continues with a sigh. Hate looks at Vengeance and nods. Vengeance smiles and pulls Mauger up. "Put him in a cell, I'll play with him later." orders Hate and throws the keys to Vengeance. Vengeance nods and disappears with Mauger. "My lord" mutters Fear and hands over his sword.
Hate smiles and takes his sword. Sighing, he puts the sword back in its holder and sees the crowd slowly making their way. "Moment" shouts Hate to the innkeeper. "Did you see Alana with him"? The innkeeper nods nervously. "Only I don't know, I mean. I didn't know she was Alana...My lord". Hate nods with a smile. "The mark said nothing?" "I hadn't seen it," he stammers. Hate looks intently at the innkeeper and puts his hands on his neck. He breaks his neck in silence. "
"You look awful," Anger mocks. "You should see the other guy jokes Hate". "Is he"? "Not yet" replies Hate laughing. "Will he"? "Maybe" Hate replies. "He's pretty interesting." "Come on," mutters Hate. The demons disappear silently into the night."
