Ashwatthama was flabbergasted hearing someone like Karna who has divine things like Sanjevani wanted to do with a street dog, So out of curiosity he asked.
He is here to save a dog. What if Karna took a dog and did not treat it nicely? After all, people often forget the importance of the things they have once they get a new better one.
He didn't want that fate for the dog in his hands, He didn't yet decide what to do with it but obviously, he was not going to let it suffer.
