Nightfall descended.
With the last ray of sunlight vanishing at the horizon, the entire room was enveloped in shadows. Mash lit an oil lamp and placed it to the side while Duanmu Huai stood by the window, gazing out.
The whole town seemed to fall into silence with the onset of darkness, as if it still held on to the old ways, toiling at sunrise and resting at sunset. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the working folk began their trek home. Once night truly set in, the town was dead quiet, hardly a human sound could be heard, and the dimly lit streets were devoid of any lamps, save for the sporadic flickers of light within the houses that added a touch of life.
A touch of life… huh?
