He was still here when I woke up; He had moved to the end of the bed again and was watching me. His yellow eyes were super-expressive and just pleasant to look at. I chucked as I thought about the fact that I didn't even know his name, but he was sleeping in my bed. He growled when I pulled my feet out from under him. I swore he liked to purposely pin my legs down in the bed. This was the second time he had slept in the bed and the second time he covered my feet.
"You know, I don't even know your name, right?"
He looked up at me with a look that I almost could almost guess to be 'you don't need to know it', shaking off his look. I got out of bed. He followed behind me, unhappily.
"You can stay in the bed if you want. I need to let out the dogs and get painkillers. My head is killing me."
My head was pounding now enough that I had to get pain killer. The more I seemed to wake up, the more it hurt. That's what I got for drinking however many glasses of red wine that I had. Right now, the number didn't even matter. Heading to the bathroom, I opened the cabinet on the wall and pulled out the bottle of painkillers. There was only one left in the bottle and that was going to have to do. There was no way in this condition I could drive to get more. Popping it in my mouth, I leaned under the sink faucet and got a mouthful of water, swallowing the pill down.
He followed me out of the bathroom and down the stairs. I saw the sheriff's jeep pull into the driveway, and I heard my wolf growl loudly. He must have also known who was here.
"You can deal with him. I'm going to be sick."
I didn't even have time to see if he had changed back into a human. I went racing to the main floor bathroom. I needed to empty the contents of my stomach, which was really just water and the pain pill. I dry heaved over the toilet bowl half a dozen times before the smallest bit of water came up. I didn't feel any better. I felt worse, actually. My head was pounding so badly that my eyes watered when I closed them, trying to breathe through the need to throw up again.
I could hear the sounds of conversation in the bathroom. It took a great deal of strength that I had to get up off the bathroom floor. The sheriff was sitting at the table; the neighbour sitting across from him. They both looked at me when I made it fully into the kitchen.
"Morning Jett. How are you feeling?" The sheriff asked.
"Like a stupid human." I snapped my head, still pounding, despite the painkiller that I took.
My dogs were standing at the edge of the room where the kitchen met the living room, but they didn't enter the kitchen. I was pretty sure that wolves at the kitchen table were the reason why. I walked into the living room slightly and petted the dogs. Ruby suddenly growled, making me turned around. The sheriff had stood up and taken a step towards me. Ruby had never growled at him before. All the dogs normally liked when the sheriff visited them.
Ruby suddenly showed more aggression towards the sheriff. He snapped his teeth at the sheriff. Grabbing Ruby by the collar, I pulled him out of the living room and to the laundry room, where I put him in the dog kennel. I even closed the door to the laundry room, for the fear he would get out and attack the sheriff. I really didn't want him ripping my dog apart.
"It's ok Ruby. You can come out later when they leave. It's for everyone's safety."
I walked back to the living room. The other dogs were sitting on the floor and not making a sound, but they were blocking the way to the kitchen.
"That's enough. You can all get kenneled if you would like. I don't have enough patience for nasty dogs today."
They still didn't move, but I stepped over them. The sheriff handed me a coffee from the local coffee place and was about to pass me a green bottle of pills, but the neighbour snatched them out of his hand.
"No, Those are way too strong for him. He's a human. Not one of us."
"I was going to tell him to cut them into quarters. Calm down."
"That's still too much."
"I don't see you bringing shit to help him, Malakai."
"I was here all night, making sure he was fine."
"Oh yes, Watching him sleep and breaking into his house is far from creepy." The Sheriff said.
But honestly, I wasn't paying attention to him. I was more wrapped up in the fact that the sheriff had called him Malakai, So that must be his name. It suited him. He seemed like the perfect type for the name Malakai. I also noticed that he had clothing on now.
"I didn't watch him sleep, thank you." Malakai snapped. His eyes lightening to a honey yellow. I hadn't even noticed his eyes were a yellow-brown ever before. I thought they were dark brown. But maybe they changed colours.
"Jett?"
"Huh?" I said, suddenly remembering that they were here.
"How is your head?"
"Fucking sore."
Malakai stood up, the pill bottle in his hand. He grabbed a cup out of the cupboard and crushed the pill. He took the very smallest amount of the powder and tossed it into the actual cup before mixing hot water into it. He wiped the bottom of the cup with a wet paper towel before tossing it into the garbage and taking the bag out.
"Take this to the trash."
He handed the bad to the sheriff, who didn't even complain. He just did as he was asked. Malakai carefully made sure to get the rest of the pill dust because that's honestly all that was left, and put it back in the bottle.
He was watching me as he handed me the glass and spoke, his voice a lot softer now than when he had spoken to the sheriff.
"Drink it slowly. It's far stronger than any pain medication available to humans."
I sipped the liquid down slowly and felt a warm burn creep up me, almost instantly. It was the strangest thing I had ever taken and there had been some weird things I had willingly taken in high school. He didn't stop watching me until the liquid was gone. He had also instructed me to sit down at the table in case the medication made me drowsy or pass out. It had definitely dealt with the pain in my head.
The sheriff looked at me, his eyes scanning over me before he spoke to Malakai.
"He will be ok taking that small amount, yes?"
"You think I would allow him to take that little amount if I thought it would hurt him?"
"I don't know, you are the one he is ——-"
"He will be fine."
"Right."
I wanted to speak for myself, but honestly, my tongue felt like a brick in my mouth currently. It was like everything was suddenly decided to check out on me. It felt like I was almost starting to fly. I wiggled my fingers slowly, trying to see if they would still move and they did, just really slowly. Malakai seemed to notice that.
"Don't worry, That's normal. It will wear off."
"Maybe you should move him to the couch. If you can get past the dogs."
"Yeah, That seems like the best idea. I don't need him falling off the chair."
Before I had time to tell Malakai I was fine, he picked me up and was carrying me. He walked right past the dogs who moved for him, with no problems. I was kind of shocked to see it.
"I'll turn the tv on for you, so you have something to watch. Ok?"
I looked at him; he looked back at me and his eyes changed colours before my eyes as he set me on the couch.
He looked at the dogs before speaking.
"You watch him. Come get me if he needs anything."
The dogs seemed to understand what he said to them, and they came to lie by the couch. I felt almost paralyzed, and it was freaking me out. I could still breathe and think, but my movements were really slow, and that was, if anything, moved at all when I tried. I closed my eyes and made sure I was still breathing before I started to calm down again.
One of the dogs got up on the couch to lie with me, but I didn't bother to open my eyes. It was too much work to even try. Instead, I just let myself fall asleep. At least I was going to have the best damn sleep ever.
