Chapter 4 - Ken

[5th April, 6:30 am, Amakura Household]

Ken Amakura sleepily opened his eyes, as mornings dull sun rays fell on his face. He made him self up, stretched his arms, and let out a sleepy yawn. Sleepily scratching his messy hair, ken went to prepare himself for school.

It was a big day for him as this was the first day of him entering school. But he didn't make it a big deal. Wearing his uniform, he walked out of his room, into the hall way and to the living area that had an adjoint kitchen. The house he lived in was an old traditional looking one. It was a seemingly spacious one too.

"Good morning Ken-kun!", said a lady who was steering some sort of curry by the stove. She wore glasses and had her hair tied into a ponytail.

"Good morning, and seriously how many times have I asked you not to come in without telling, Nazuna-san! You almost scared me."

"What? I'm your guardian after all. Well now take a seat, I've almost finished cooking."

Dispit his big house, Ken Amakura lived alone. His parents had passed away when he was a small kid, and he didn't remember much about it. Since then he had been living with Nazuna who claimed to be a relation of his. He wasn't quite sure about that either, but he trusted her.

(If you were wondering how she got in, she had a spare key.)

A while later Nazuna served breakfast.

"Say Ken-kun, where's Kon-chan?", asked Nazuna as she treated herself to a mouthful of rice.

"Oh she... she said she had some important business to take care of. She'll be back by noon."

Kon was the other person that stayed with Ken. Actually she was his maid. No one knew how and why she became his maid though.

"Hmm?", Nazuna tilted her neck. She then ate her last mouthful of rice, and placed her bowl on the table with a thud. "Ahh that was nice..."

Then she stood up;

"Ok then, am off! See you at schoooool"

And she left.

"What's this woman's deal, suddenly barraging in and suddenly leaving. Sigh, I guess I'll have to wash these dishes too...", Ken said to himself. Then as he didn't want to be late on his first day of high school, ken put the empty dishes in the sink, and left for school.

As ken arrived at the front gate of "Kyoto Blooming Flowers High", his new school, the first thing he saw was a masked shrine maiden. She was going circles around the entrance, as if unable to enter. Even though there were a certain amount of students there, non of them seemed to notice her.

Ken approached her.

"Kon, what are you doing here?"

Having not noticed him earlier, she startled.

"Eeek! Master!?"

"Sigh, come this way lets talk somewhere else.", Said Ken managing to be less suspicious. Why? Because no one else but him could see her. The moment he saw the shrewd girl he'd knew his days in middle school would not be as peace full as he thought they would be.

As Ken spotted earlier there were quite few student's around the main entrance, all probably freshmen like him. So he went towards a tree that was a bit far away from the main entrance. Leaned against it's trunk, checked the surrounding once more, then looked at Kon.

"So, what may your business be here?"

"Well I was searching weather this place had any calamities hiding within it.", Kon answered.

"Is that all? Seriously I thought you had left for good."

"Yes mater."

"Don't worry. There won't be any dangerous existences here, and what's with that mask?"

Kon, a spiritual being who was in the form of a human. She had appeared a few years ago infront of his door step, claiming to be his servant. Now had come on her own accord to the school Ken, the person she claimed as her master, would be attending. She had planned to do a full survey on the premises, but for some reason she had been unable to.

"But, why couldn't I enter?"

"You couldn't enter? To think of it, you sure looked troubled at the entrance didn't you?"

Kon was a person that could penetrate through thick walls. Which meant she could have entered school premises even if the gates were closed. So why couldn't she?

"Kon share your vision with me.", ken said.

Kon immediately without hesitation, placed her hand on her mask then pulled out another within it, out of no where. And handed it over to Ken.

The surrounding appeared the same, but then Ken noticed something strange. They could not clearly see anything beyond the school walls. What they saw was a chrystalin surface, that probably extended all arround the whole premises. It was like they were in a huge glass ball. Ken understood the situation.

"A barrier huh? Why didn't you tell me earlier?", He said as he handed over the mask back to Kon.

"I was about to. But thought it would be better if master saw it himself. How ever master, it seems the intention was to keep spiritual existences, such as me, out."

"Hmm, seems so.", Ken slipped into a deep thought. "But, how did you come in?"

That was an obvious question. As to if the barrier was placed in order to keep those such as Kon out. Then how could she be inside in the first place.

"Well it seems a slight gap opened as master penetrated through it. I simply took advantage of the situation."

"It's not normal for that to happen right?", Ken asked, puzzled.

Normally entering a barrier which you are allowed to would cause no harm to it. But this time the barrier had been fractured.

"Normally this wouldn't happen. But It seems masters overwhelming power had caused to react with the barrier's, which had caused it to fracture.", Said Kon clearing her master's doubt.

Ken seemed convinced. Then again doubt came in his head.

"Well let's say we got in how ever. But what was the main objective of placing this huge barrier?"

Was it actually to keep some things out, or the exact opposite. To keep something in.

"That I don't know master."

There were certain suspects that came into Ken's mind. But this big of a barrier had to be definitely done by a group of people. No one person could pull out such an enormous one.

"It seems it's them...", Ken mumbled to himself.

"Master, what shall I do? Should I find the caster?"

"Ah, no let's not peck our noses into unwanted business. You go home, Kon."

Regardless it was Ken's first day at school, and he didn't want to ruin it.

"But master... How am I supposed to?"

"What do you mean?"

"The gap may have been already closed by now."

"I almost forgot that. Well there seems to be no other choice. Stay by my side, and even let anyone see you. You may wonder here and there..., but don't go far."

"Yes!", Kon said at once pumping her hand into the air.

"Huh?"

"Ah! ahem. Yes master.", she said once again as if nothing happened.

Lately the girl had been acting a bit off of her usual self. Ken thought it probably might have been influence from Nazuna. He kind of started regretting introducing Kon to her. Well it couldn't be avoided either way.

Ken swayed his head side wise, intending to forget what just happened. Then went towards the main entrance, as he saw some of his friends from middle school. They too happened to attend the same school. Ken was a bit relived there were some that he already knew.

He chatted for a while with his friends, when he noticed a strange, -kind of cute- girl staring at him.
