Chapter 13 - Feelings

Mustafa was sitting on the edge of the mountains. The work this time was a little bit difficult, but he completed the work flawlessly as always. But he didn't know why, he was feeling a sense of guilt somewhere in his conscience. The Emperor had told him to assassinate a family of a wealthy trader this time, and that included everyone in his family, and make it look like it was an accident. He chose the simplest way possible. He went inside the house, sliced through the necks of everyone, and set the house on fire, making it look like an accident. But the thing which was eating away at his conscience was that there was a newborn baby in the family. In all the previous assignments given by the king, he had never encountered a baby. Looking at the innocent face of the baby as it slept peacefully, unaware of the death of his family, blissfully unaware of the horrors of the world, he felt something that he had never felt in his missions before, he felt hesitant to kill the baby, for the first time in his life, he felt guilt creeping into him while killing someone. So he picked up the baby, went to the nearest orphanage, and kept it at their door.

After he burnt down the whole house, he went to the emperor and told him about the completion of the mission. The Emperor gave him his reward and never once questioned him about the mission. The Emperor trusted him fully, believing in his skills. He then came away from there and here he was, sitting on the edge. It gave a certain thrill to him while he sat on the edge. He was feeling guilty because he couldn't complete the mission perfectly. He had spared a life, going against the emperor's orders of killing everyone in the family. The mountain breeze passed by him, hitting him with the fresh scent of pines and cedars growing across the mountain.

"Did I do the right thing by sparing the baby? I am an assassin on hire, I shouldn't have emotions coming in between me and my mission. That would be very dangerous and can even prove fatal to me. But why do I not feel as much regret as I should have felt after failing a mission? The baby looked so innocent and cute while asleep....what should I have done? What would have been the correct decision?"

Mustafa sat on edge pondering on the situation. While he was thinking, a thick branch of the tree nearest to him broke and started falling towards his head. But Mustafa was not an assassin for nothing, he sensed the danger approaching him and was just about to pull out his blade when suddenly out of nowhere the two dice came in front of him, forming an "X" shape. As soon as the branch came near the "X", it flew away in the opposite direction, as if it had been repelled by something.

"What the heck was that?" Mustafa asked himself as the dice fell on the floor shortly after that. He picked up the dice and rolled them over his hand to examine them more closely. But he found nothing different between these dice and the ordinary dice used in playing games.

"How did the dice repel the branch away, did it create some sort of protection all around me, or was it only in front of me? Or was it some sort of force field which only repels the things away? It can be very handy if I can just find out the way it works, the more so in my profession. The variety of uses it could have are endless. He flipped the dice in the air, performing some handy tricks with it. He could not ask the old man who had sold him the dice about this, as he had already left the city, continuing his journey. There was only one kingdom where magic was practiced, and only the royal family knew of it. According to what he knew, they only practiced some sort of magic that could control all the five elements, pretty powerful magic which was devastating in battles. But the magic used in his dice seemed different from that magic. He would have to find out more about it. He went down the mountains as the sun slowly started setting down.
