Later that night, Jason could not sleep. He tossed and turned on his mat. He was confused about what to do. He sat up and walked outside the house. He sat on the bench and stared at the moon. He was surprised when he heard a voice behind him. It was his sister.
"What are you doing outside?" she asked.
Jason turned towards her and told her to sit down beside him. When she did, he told her about what his friends had asked him to do. She was appalled.
"You want to steal? That's awful! Stealing is wrong", she exclaimed.
"I know but what choice do I have? I don't want to drop out of school!" he exclaimed, with tears in his eyes.
"Jason, mummy always says we should trust God. Trusting God involves doing the right thing. You cannot join them Jason. You know what I think?" she asked, curling her lips.
"What?" Jason asked.
"I think you should report them. That would be the right thing to do" she said.
Jason was deeply confused. He wasn't sure whether or not to listen to his sister. What did Sarah know?
However, he tried to imagine what would happen if he got caught. He would bring shame to his mother and late father. He decided to do as Sarah suggested. He refused the offer from the boys and reported them to the rich man.
The following week, when the boys went to steal from him, they were caught. The man was surprised that honest boys like Jason still existed. He praised Jason's mother for raising such an honest boy. As a way of rewarding him, the man gave Jason a scholarship. Jason could not believe it. He was happy. He thanks his sister for giving him the right counsel.
"Now I know it pays to do the right thing", he said to himself.
