Chapter 69: Battle against dementors

Susan and Hannah screamed at the sight. Luna looked extremely worried.

"That's...a lot, what now? can we run from them?" Luna said.

"Run where? we are surrounded!" Susan pointed out.

Harry made a mental connection with the closest dementor.

'Leave us be. You can eat the rest if you want.'

The dementor inmediatly sent a response.

'NO. CONSUME. GREAT SOUL.'

"Tsk, if you all want my soul so bad…so be it, I will use 'that'." Harry muttered.

He turned to Luna.

"Luna, I'm going to need your help. Distract them for a minute."

"Alright, but what are you going to do?" Luna asked.

"I'm going to teach them a lesson they won't forget."

Harry sat down with his legs crossed and closed his eyes. Inmeatly, magic around him started to stir and the wind started to flow faster around him.

Luna wasn't sure exactly what Harry was doing, but He seem to be preparing to cast something big. She turned her attention to the dementors.

"Stay close to me!." Luna told Susan and Hannah while the dementors were approaching.

A group of twenty dementors was almost upon them already. Luna felt the temperature lowering fast.

She pointed her wand at the group.

"EXPECTO PATRONUS!"

A white rabbit came out of the wand and flew towards the dementors. The creatures made some painful noises and started to get away from the rabbit.

"Wow Luna, you can use a Patronus?" Susan was in awe.

Hannah saw that Luna seem to pant a bit.

"Are you ok, Luna?" She asked with concern.

"I'm fine, that spell is a bit exhausting." Luna gave a weary smile.

After ten seconds of running around, the white rabbit dissipated into nothingness, and once again, the dementors started to make their way toward the trio.

They looked at Harry. The phenomena occurring around him were getting stronger, but He was still not making any move.

"Seem like He needs more time, for whatever it is that He is trying to do." Susan commented before looking at Luna, who was pointing her wand in the air again.

"EXPECTO PATRONUS!"

The white rabbit came out and chased out the dementors again.

After casting the spell, Luna fell to one knee and started to pant heavily.

"Luna!" Hannah came to her side and tried to lift her up.

Susan lifted on her other side.

"You can't use that spell again!, You are probably close to magical exhaustion." Susan's face showed a mix of concern and fear.

"What are we going to do when they come back?." Hanna asked.

"I-I think I can manage one more," Luna said, sounding very weak.

"NO, you cannot! Exhausting your magical core completely can kill you!." Susan exclaimed.

Hannah looked at Harry, who was still not moving.

"Come on Harry, you have to do something." She muttered.

Susan looked up and gasped at the sight, the other two heard her and turned also to look up.

It seems like the other dementors must have felt that their brothers were having trouble and came to help. Because now, instead of twenty dementors, there were almost a hundred coming their way.

As soon as the rabbit disappeared, the horde of dementors rushed toward them much faster than before.

Luna moved her wand in the air again and before Susan or Hannah could stop her, she said.

"EXPECTO PATRONUS!!!"

A white light came from her wand, but this time, instead of a rabbit, a small white mist appeared and disappeared a second later.

"Arggg!" Luna collapsed and would have hit the ground if Susan wasn't there to catch her.

"Luna!!" Hannah yelled.

"Oh no…." Susan tried to grab Luna and move away from the monsters approaching, but when one of them got close enough, she entered some sort of trance. Sad memories rushed into her mind, memories about the death of her parents, cousins, uncles, and aunts. Memories about her, being left alone and sad. And she could not move.

Hannah was in the same situation, while Luna seem to be unconscious.

The closest dementor extended his bony fingers to grab Susan's face and pull her closer when a shiny white chain shot out of nowhere and hit the dementor in the face.

The creature screamed in pain as smoke started to come out of the place where the chain hit.

"Sorry for the wait, I'll take it from here."

More and more white chains seem to appear near Harry and then shot out in all directions.

Some of them pushed back the dementors trying to consume the girls, while others seem to be going all over Hogsmeade.

There was one that started to cover the entire perimeter of Hogsmeade, creating a gigantic circle, while others went all over the town, attacking any dementor they came across.

Harry showed no change as He was concentrating on perfecting the shape that the chains were creating.

If one were to look from the sky, one would see a giant magical circle that was getting more complex by the second as the chains kept moving.

The dementors were unable to approach further, but they did not go too far either. They seem to be waiting for Harry to get tired as they did with Luna.

—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Near the entrance of Hogsmeade, there were three people approaching in a hurry.

"By Merlin!, Albus look!" McGonagall pointed at the sky, where the dementors were flying.

Dumbledore made a grave expression.

"Cornelius should have listened to me and removed those creatures from here."

"It would not have mattered. I believe the dementors are no longer under the control of the Ministry. " Snape pointed out.

Once the trio was only a few feet from the entrance of Hogsmeade, Dumbledore grabbed both of them firmly.

"STOP!" He yelled in an uncharacteristically way.

Both Snape and McGonagall were baffled at his sudden change and wondered what trigger his reaction.

They would not have to wait long as a few seconds later, a very shiny white chain came flying and covered the entrance. The chain didn't seem to be made of metal, but instead, it seem to be made of pure light.

"What is that?" Said McGonagall in an alarmed voice.

Snape and Dumbledore were quietly observing the movements of the chain and noticed that it want really moving, but it was actually growing in length at an alarming rate as it covered more ground.

"It seems to be circling the village. Do you know what that is?" Snape asked.

"I have an idea. And there is not just one. Look." Dumbledore pointed to the interior of Hogsmeade, where many more chains were seen.

The chains would grow in length, attack any dementor they came across, and then lay on the ground.

"It seems like they are creating a specific shape." Snape pointed out.

"That's called a Formation. It is basically a giant magical circle that requires a group of wizards or witches to power it up and perform feats of magic that would be impossible otherwise." Dumbledore said.

"That's ancient magic, no one has used it for centuries." McGonagall looked at the growing formation with concern before looking at the Headmaster.

"Albus, do you know what it does?"

Dumbledore shook his head.

"No, and that's why I did not want you to step inside it. If we do, we may not be able to come back out. Formations can be deadly even for the most powerful wizards in the world if they are careless."

Snape tried to examine the chains a bit closer. He took out his wand and cast a few detection spells.

"I don't think this Formation is harmful…at least not for us."

Dumbledore also did an examination.

"You might be right, I don't detect any traces of dark magic. But, you can never be sure, is not that hard to harm people with so-called 'light magic'. Is best to wait for the Formation to finish its function before going in."

"I hope you are right Albus, we have a lot of students in there that may need help." McGonagall's face was now filled with worry.

—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harry was now panting and looked very tired, but He was still smiling.

"You bastards made me work hard. Now is time to pay."

Without standing up, Harry took hold of the closest chain. As soon as he did, all of the chains covering Hogsmeade started to shine brighter and brighter.

Seeing this, the dementors seem to realize that they were in danger because they stopped pursuing people and started to fly away.

Harry saw this and chuckled.

"Too late I'm afraid. You should never have come here!"

He clenched his teeth and poured more of his magic to activate the Formation.

Hogsmeade was engulfed in an almost blinding white light.

The people around Hogsmeade did not understand what was going on and started to take cover inside the shops.

Even the death eaters that were still around got spooked and looked for refuge.

Then, they started to hear blood-curdling screams that seem to come from their worst nightmares, those were not human screams.

The dementors were screaming.
