Chapter 37
The witch with a gift
A few days later, at night, Harry encountered Luna once more, looking out one of the windows of the seventh floor. She was intensely looking toward the forbidden forest.
"You didn't get locked out of your dorm again, right?" Harry approached her and asked.
Luna turned towards him. The glaze in her eyes disappeared, she then looked at him and smiled.
"Hello, Harry. No, I just like to come here and watch the luminous little creatures flying around the forest at night. They are very pretty."
"Luminous creatures?" Harry looked towards the forest but it was all pitch black.
"Yes, there are many types with different colors and sizes. There are Humdingers, Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, Heliopaths, Nargles… "
"Yes, I get the idea." Harry interrupted. Then asked.
"Do you see them around wizards and witches too? Are there any around me?." He had an idea of what she was seeing but needed to confirm it.
Luna examined him closely. "Yes, there are some Wrackspurts around you, just a few. Most students have only a few around them. The teachers have more, especially the Headmaster."
Harry was always keeping his magic on a tight leash, except when he was practicing inside the room of requirements.
For a moment he slightly released the leash and let his magic out.
The effect was immediate. A gush of wind seem to emanate from him, his eyes shone brightly and the tiles on the ground shook a bit.
Luna's eyes opened wide like plates.
"What do you see now?." Harry asked plainly.
"I-i see a lot of them! Wrackspurts and some Dabberblimps….I have never seen so many of them around one person." Luna was not an easy person to surprise but this one was one of those rare occasions.
Harry contained his magic once again and everything went back to normal.
"I think I understand what it is that you see," Harry said to her.
"So…you believe me?." Luna sounded hopeful.
"No one else can see those creatures. Daddy once said that he could see them too…but I know he was just trying to be nice." Luna looked down.
"I cannot see them either. But I have read about your gift." Harry said.
"Gift?" Luna sounded doubtful. She wasn't sure if that was a gift.
"It is called Magesight, it is an ability as rare as parseltongue, maybe more. What you see are not really living creatures, is just magical energy, in its purest form."
"I don't understand, they seem alive, they move around and shine…" Luna explained.
"Yes, I suppose it can look like that to you. Magical energy can move in erratic ways, especially around people with poor control like the students here, or in nature. Tell me, what color are the lights you see in the forest? Are they green? " Harry asked.
Luna nodded. "Mostly green, but there are some yellow. I call the green ones Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and the yellow ones Heliopaths." Luna answered.
"The green one is known as wild magic energy or nature magic. There are many magical plants and animals in that forest that would expel that type of magic. As for the yellow one…I'm not sure, but it could come from the centaur tribes that live there." Harry explained.
"So that's what it is…is magic. What I have been seeing since my mom died… I thought…." Tears started to pour from her eyes
Harry did not know what to do. He has no experience dealing with crying girls. The only ones crying before him have been those who knew were about to die at his hands.
Harry approached Luna and gave her a tap on the shoulder.
"Emm. You should be proud of the gift you have. And don't concern yourself with the opinions of those below you. You have the potential to become a very powerful witch and -"
Harry was interrupted when Luna suddenly launched herself against him and hugged him while still crying.
Harry did not know what to do, but it seemed impolite to push her away to he just stood there until she calmed herself.
"Thank you," She said with a smile.
