When the sudden call from a staff disturbed Adrianna's peace, it baffled Xavier too. He saw her breaking down for someone and it broke his heart a little. Xavier wanted to drop her at her home but Adrianna refused.
"No… I want to see her. She was my co-staff when I worked as a part-time worker in the cafe." Adrianna replied while wiping her tears.
Xavier nodded his head in agreement and turned the wheels of the vehicle to the murder spot.
When they arrived, the area was temporarily closed by the police. There were sirens ranging from a long distance as they parked. Adrianna left the vehicle and rushed to see her staff member but the crowd was pushed.
"Please, she was my employee. Let me see her." She screamed at the Policeman and he let her get inside while Xavier followed her too.
Adrianna's eyes widened in shock when she spotted the dead body. It was shrunk and her skin was wrinkled as if someone sucked the soul out of her. The sight was horrible for her. She leaned on Xavier's shoulder and cried.
Xavier was dumbfounded to see the horrible site but it wasn't something he was not aware of.
Two Policemen approached them for interrogation.
"Miss Adrianna Cosgrove?" He asked her name.
"Yes, it is me." Adrianna responded.
"You need to come with us."
"She won't go anywhere, it's not in the rules." Xavier glared at the policemen and they took their steps back.
"We need to interrogate her. It's part of the investigation. Miss Cosgrove was the last person to see her." He pointed at the dead body.
"It's fine. I will come." Adrianna agreed to follow the men.
"I will come along… she won't go alone." Xavier was being possessive.
"It's fine, Mr Black.." said the Policeman.
As they enter the seculared place for the interrogation, Adrianna glimpses something in the dark corner, like a figure standing there and watching her. But when she penned her gaze, there was nothing and she assumed it to be a delusion.
"When did you see her?" Asked The policeman.
"She left the cafe after her shift. We got late due to an emergency order." Adrianna replied.
"Did you know she used to go home alone?" He asked further.
"Not everyday she went home alone. But yeah, frequently…"
"Mam, this case is similar to the previous cases. We suspect some animal is lurking in the dark and attacking people. Drank their food and left the body to deteriorate." The policemen informed them.
"I have seen the news on television." Adrianna stated.
"How can you say that this attack is by an animal? It hasn't been proven yet." Xavier asked the policemen.
"There is no other proof to…." The policeman was speaking when an assistant arrived and informed them.
"Sir, you have to come with us. There is something you need to see."
His expressions were horrid and he was sweating as if he saw a ghost. This made everyone panic and they got up to see what the man had to show them.
They went into the IT section of the building where the murder took place. The manager played the CCTV footage to the police and it left everyone frightened.
"What in the world is that thing?" The policeman exclaimed in horror.
"It's a man devouring the girl's body after he killed her brutally." Xavier gasped.
"What?" Adrianna was too stunned to speak. She was exasperated to see what the footage held.
Not even in her worst nightmare she ever thought of seeing something so horrible like this. The way that man twisted her neck and drank blood like a vampire. Suddenly, she was sweating badly but the blood in her veins ran cold. Her eyes widened in fear when she realised that the killer was no one else but the man from last night who had placed his order late that night.
She fainted and fell back but Xavier caught her in time. He shook her and Adrianna woke up with a headache.
"Adrianna, are you okay?" He asked her worriedly.
"No, I am not. What was that? A vampire? Do they really exist?" Her questions made Xavier keep his tongue tied.
"We need to send this footage to the CBI. They have to handle this case. If Vampires exist and we aren't aware of this fact, it would be a bigger problem." The policemen discussed.
"If your interrogation has completed, can we leave?" Xavier was furious as he asked them.
"Yes, Sir!! You are allowed to leave."the policeman replied.
Xavier helped Adrianna to get back to the car and he drove her to her home. The entire rise was silent as Adrianna was still consumed by the shock. It was something that humans were not allowed to see but somehow, it got pictured. Xavier parked the car in the parking lot of the building where Adrianna lives.
"Do vampires exist?" She asked Xavier.
"I hope that was not true… but I can't say anything. We need to be careful, especially you. These recent attacks were targeted mostly on women and now it makes sense how they died due to drainage of blood from their body. We should wait for the announcement from the Mayor. Anyway, you are not going alone, again till this matter gets resolved." Xavier instructed her carefully.
"I am the only person in my family who can take care of us, it doesn't matter if you like it or not but I can't stay inside in my house. I have to go out and do my duties as a single mother." She corrected Xavier's statement.
"Alright, but I will hire security for you and your kids." He was persistent.
"It's not required. I am just an ordinary girl like others. You can provide me protection but what about others? They would live under this fear of getting attacked by vampires one day. Does it make any sense? I guess no." Adrianna was pissed at him and exited the vehicle.
She turned around and looked at home, "good night, Mr Black." Then she disappeared from his sight.
Xavier exhaled loudly in his car and stretched his body. His hands went down upto his thighs and he talked to himself.
"This girl is not ordinary, definitely not." Then, he drove away after a while.
Adrianna was tired and received a call from Cathy.
"Hey dear?"
"Where were you? Have you checked the time?" She yelled at her.
"I am sorry but one of our Staff members has been killed by someone and she couldn't survive the injuries. I had to go to check the situation and I was being interrogated by Police." She said,
"Alright, the kids are sleeping and I took them to my house. You should take a rest. We will talk tomorrow morning."
The call was disconnected and Adrianna went to open the door of her apartment. She went inside and sighed. Suddenly, her eyes caught a pair of red ones glaring at her.
"Where were you?" That demanding voice sent shivers down the spine.
