Chapter 1 - Indra Jatra (इन्द्रजात्रा)

It can be seen that the festival of Indra Jatra, which has been celebrated since ancient times, is celebrated inside Kathmandu valley.Indrajatra, also known as Yenya, is the largest religious street festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. The festival consists of two programs namely Indra Jatra and Kumari Jatra. Indrajatra is marked by masked dances of gods and demons, sacred images and cymbals in honor of Indra, the king of heaven. In this festival, which is celebrated with great fun, the dance troupe performs regularly, plays instruments and dances in the form of various deities.

It reflects and perserves the modern history of Nepal. It is regarded as seat of royalty. Often called Basantapur Durbar square is surrounded by age old temples epitomizes history with religious and cultural life of the nation and people. It's the place where kings of Nepal were crowed and their coronations solemnized. Taleju Temple, Kal Bhairav, the god of destruction, Nautalle Durbar, Coronation Nasal Chowk, Gaddi Baithak, statue of King Pratap Mall, Big Drums, Jagannath temple and Kasthmandap are main attractions of it. It's the area where most of religious celebrations like Indra Jatra, Gaijatra, Vasanta Panchami and others organized.
