Chapter 1 - End or Start

"..no..eno..RENO!" a stack of papers slams on top of my desk waking me up. My arms are folded on my desk with my head buried between, I look up slowly, squinting, barely awake. My teacher, Mr.Burns, is staring me down with a mad look in his eyes. His wrinkly forehead is shrinking as he squints at me with obvious anger. "Reno, this is the third time this week you've fallen asleep in my class, hand out these papers, sit down and stay awake or I will kick you out of my class. Understand?" He looks down at me waiting for an answer, his face still red from anger, I don't answer him, instead I get up from my chair and pick up the stack of papers. Slowly walking around handing them out to my classmates, he watches me get up and simply walks back to the front of the class, an angry look still on his face as he watches me pass out the papers. Once I'm finally done I sit back down in my chair, fold my arms on my desk and plop my head back down staring out of the window to my left. Mr. Burns went on with his lesson for what felt like hours until finally it ended and I somehow fell asleep again. Picking my head up off the desk I look around and the class is empty, not a student nor a teacher around. I guess they just left me here, I shrug, looking out of the window; the sun is setting and it's getting darker, time to head home.

As I'm about to look away from the window something catches my eye. It looks like a shooting star, it's bright and a light purple color, it's the shape of a sphere and.. It looks like it's heading directly towards me. I keep looking at it to see if it's actually coming towards me and as I'm watching this thing slowly fall I see more become visible, a total of five of these bright purple spheres are hurtling towards the direction of the school and one was heading right for me. I immediately start running for the door, stumbling over some desks but I push my way through, right as I reach for the handle I hear the sound of glass shattering and a loud boom pierces my ears, blurring my vision for a second and making me lose balance. The floor can't handle the direct impact of whatever hit it and it crumbles, shaking the entire building as the floor collapses and forces me down with it, falling into the classroom below me. I can barely make out a desk right below me, I brace for the impact and raise my shoulder falling to my side and flexing the muscles in my arm. I slam into the desk with so much force it bends and briefly knocks the wind out of me. I pick myself up off the desk coughing and winded, dust and small pieces of debris caking my white hair brown.

Looking in front of me I see a figure rising from the destruction, big pieces of the ceiling and chunks of wall sliding off of them as they get up. Slowly the dust settles and the bright light from the moon shines on the figure in front of me. He's tall, almost seven feet, slim and is wearing nothing but pants. His skin is gray and looks like cracked rock, the cracks in his skin glowing a bright purple and his ears are long and end in a point, kind of like that of an Elfs from fantasy books. His eyes are completely black and he's missing his eyebrows and has no hair. He looks at me and slowly, with his left hand, raises up what looks like a curved sword with jagged edges, pointing it at me. His entire figure starts to blur and light blue particles that look like dust envelop him, eventually consuming him as he vanishes from sight.

My guard is up now, I have no idea whats going on but some fucking wizard is attacking me, my shoulder is still in a little pain from the fall but I can see clearly now and the winded state I was in is gone. I hear a faint noise like a whistle from behind me, and the desks and chairs around me fly forward, pushed by some mysterious force. As I start to turn around I see that blue dust and the shadow of the man from earlier on the ground to my right. His shadow is lifting the sword up in a swinging motion about to strike at me. In a standing position I kick my feet like I'm going to jump but instead I launch myself backwards, slamming into the man before he can finish his swing. Slamming into him felt like hitting a wall, he barely moved but he did stop his attack, I see the blue dust start to envelop him again. Remembering what happened last time I grab his arm before he vanishes and the blue dust starts to disappear, he almost breaks free of my grasp but I hold on tight. With one motion I turn my body around, still holding his arm, and tackle us both to the ground, his sword falls to the ground and I am now holding both his arms down while on top of him. He headbutts me, the headbutt feels like a rock was thrown at my face, now he's free from my hold but he backs away from his sword. I grab it before he can react and point it at him. I've never held a sword before and I don't know if I can kill him if he tries to attack again. My stance is awkward and my footing is probably all wrong, nonetheless i'm not backing down, it's my life or his. He stares at me like he's analyzing me, trying to understand what i'm doing, he gets into a running position and charges me. It's a slow charge like he's given up or doesn't care, I have a clear chance to stab him right now, right through the stomach. Do I take it? This seems wrong, he's given up clearly, maybe he wants to die. There's no need to think this through though, he tried to kill me already.

He finally got in range of me and without hesitation I plunge the blade deep in his stomach, the jagged edges of the blade tearing at his skin with a sound like scraping rock with metal. Red blood slowly pours from the wound and as it reaches a certain point it turns blue. The man falls to his knees, the blade still in his stomach, and stares up at me. His completely black eyes fill with tears as he opens his mouth, mouthing the words, "Thank You" until he finally slides off the end of the blade and drops to the ground, dead. That blue dust I saw earlier begins to leave the man's body and crawl up the blade of the sword and cover my hand. I drop the sword out of fear but the dust stays on my hand, slowly it creeps up my body until it finally covers it, my vision is crowded with blue and my head is burning. I feel extremely hot and have a headache that's slowly increasing in pain. A loud static like noise fills my head and I can't even hear my thoughts anymore, my entire body burns then all at once everything goes numb, my knees give out and I hit the ground face first. The dust is gone and my vision is darkening, am I dying? It feels so.. soothing, is this death?

My eyes feel heavy and my head hurts, it's hard to open my eyes but I force them open. They try to close again but I keep them back, my entire body feels sore and I'm drenched in sweat. I try to pick myself up but I barely get off the ground before my arms give out and I fall back down, looking around me everything is still in a complete mess, the ceiling is gone, windows smashed and debris is everywhere, there's even a fire roaring quietly in the corner, it seems to be dying out. That man's body is still on the ground in front of me and his skin, which was already gray, seems to have lost its color, the lights in the cracks of his skin have gone out. To my left the sword I used to kill that man is lying next to me, with much more cracks than I remember, also the jagged edges are gone and it seems longer and slimmer kind of like a katana except it's not curved anymore. I reach for the sword grabbing it and as I do a cold feeling rises from my fingertips traveling all around my body, the soreness I was feeling slowly fades but some of it still lingers. Slowly I lift myself up with the help of the sword, which is now glowing blue, and check my surroundings one more time. Everything is quiet expect the small sound of the roaring fire, looking out of what used to be windows, it is pitch black the only light coming from the moon and a dim red light glowing off far in the distance, the city which is visible from the school is completely dark, none of the buildings has a single light on. With the help of the sword I walk towards the door of the room and slowly open it, peeking my head out right and left.

The halls are long, the left side of the hall leads to a dead end with a classroom on the right and a window at the end of it which is smashed. The right side leads to an open area full of classrooms and offices, there are also double doors leading outside further down and staircases leading up on both sides of the open area. The hall is completely empty but this place is a mess; there are giant claw marks covering the walls and many of the doors to offices and classes are hanging on one hinge or are laying on the ground half destroyed or eaten.. a huge bite mark is visible on some of the doors. Cautiously, I walk out of the classroom, the sword still supporting me, and start heading towards the double doors on the far end of the hall. I'm about to reach the double doors when I hear the sound of something hitting the ground, like metal clanging on the floor. It came from the room to my left, the door is intact and the claw marks stop at that door. I'm scared, I don't want to fight much less see another one of those people. I could leave, but what if it's another kid, it's midnight though who would be here? Curiosity beats me, if it is another of those "rock" people they would eventually come out an chase me down anyway, I'm not in any shape to fight much less run so why not check out the noise, I'm so stupid, I walk up to the door and slowly turn the handle, my hands are shaking and sweat is pouring down my face. The door opens inward with a loud squeaking noise, "Fuck" I mumble under my breath.

As I peak in, still scared to fully enter, I see a large paw full of black fluffy fur almost blocking the entrance. Looking further in I see the rest of the body, a giant dog like creature, but much fluffier, sprawled out, blood leaking from cuts all over its body that sticks to its fur hardening it. Its eyes are closed and its snout is larger than my body, its mouth is open with its tongue hanging out of it, it has huge fangs, larger than my head. Sticking in its stomach, which I can only assume is a weapon of some kind, is a crescent moon shaped blade which has a handle that connects to the two ends of the moon, it's small, no longer than my arm. Kneeling down in front of it, blood streaking down their face mixing with sweat, is a kid, a boy no older than Ten, breathing heavily staring at this weapon. He hears the door open and looks in my direction, he tries to grab his weapon but before he can, a feeling, like a shock of electricity hits us both. Like a tether connecting us and he drops to the ground just inches away from his weapon, as did I, losing my balance and dropping the sword, falling face first.
