Mauve could hear her heartbeat in her throat as she walked out the front door. Louis limped beside her. She wanted to tell him to get some rest, but she didn't think she dared to do this.
"Should you be moving?" she asked regardless.
"I already took blood. It's just taking a little time to heal. Don't worry about it," Louis said.
Mauve nodded slowly and walked out of the doors. The sight in front of her was awful. There was blood all over the stairs. Was that a chunk of flesh? Mauve did her best not to gag, but if she thought the sight was bad, the smell was even worse.
A few vampires littered the front of the castle. They were mostly servants helping the injured. She walked down the stairs, careful not to block the way of those going up.
"Do you know where Jael is?" she asked.
"He should be in the field," Louis replied.
