Mauve gladly accepted Jael's help down the stairs after Jean had shut the door. She couldn't believe he had been waiting the entire time. Did he intend to do this every time? She could just as easily meet him back in his room; he didn't have to stand here alone.
"Did you really wait here the whole time?" Mauve asked, her voice a mix of disbelief and curiosity as she descended the staircase.
Jael's grip on her arm was firm yet gentle, guiding her down the stairs. He glanced at her, his expression softening. "Of course I did. I wanted to make sure you were safe."
"Safe?" She chuckled. "What could possibly get me up on the roof?"
"I'm not willing to take any chances."
"Chances?" She laughed again. "The worst thing that would happen is me falling off the roof, and that's impossible because I wouldn't dare go near the edge."
"Still, better to be prepared for anything."
