Mauve got to the top of the stairs with Jael's hand still around hers. She didn't dare pull her hand away as it was pretty dark and she couldn't see a thing. The topmost floor was mostly unused so it had an eerie feeling to it.
The stairs leading to the rooftop were at the end of the floor. Jael did not hesitate to lead her across the corridor. He got to the end of the floor in no time and led her up the short set of stairs.
"Stand back," he said as he walked toward the closed door. Mauve could barely make it out in the darkness.
She did as he requested and stood directly behind him as he unbolted the door and threw it open. The door screeched slightly as if protesting but Jael flung it open without effort.
Mauve blinked rapidly as the moonlight streamed in. She didn't even have to step out to see the bright sky. From the doorway, she could see the blanket of stars surrounding the crescent moon.
