I'm wrapped up in my Biology assignment when my phone rings, one, two, three times before buzzing and depositing itself in my trash can.
"What the fuck? " I mumble to the air, shutting my textbook and fishing through make up stained tissue papers and memo notes. I think it's about time I reduced the volume on my phone. The heart attacks I've gotten just from this phone ringing is astronomical.
Getting texts and calls is something I should be accustomed to. I am, after all, Sana Kenton, my high school's number one cheerleader and regional champion. That would probably sound more impressive if I actually cared about it. The phone is still buzzing when I find it, this time with a call of all things.
Receiving calls is something I hate, to be honest. I hate talking and meaningless conversations annoy me. The last time I had a meaningful call was when my best friend, Niki, wanted to tell her crush how she felt about him. Very insightful, yes. This time the caller ID reads Amelia.
"Amy?"
"Omg Sana! I've been texting, why didn't you text back?!" Her voice sounds higher than it usually does and if I am correct, she is most likely drunk. Again.
"I was workin-"
"I'm at this party right now and everyone's here. And ah! It's been so much fun. You have to come. We're playing games!"
"I can-"
"See you soon!"
I have only ever had one successful conversation with Amelia and it didn't last long. She only ever wants to talk about parties and boys and clothes.
Nonetheless, I get up from the desk and pick through my wardrobe. Most of my outfits are in black and other dark colors. After little thought, I settle on an oversized tee and cargo pants with some boots. After greeting my parents downstairs, I head out and drive towards the address Amelia had texted me.

The sound of music greeted me the moment I stepped out the car. It didn't take long to find Amelia, I just had to go where the party was loudest. To my surprise, I found my best friend Niki, there with her crush turned boyfriend.
"Why didn't you tell me about the party?" I asked while glaring at her
"You always do assignments at night. You won't have picked up!"
"Still!" I said as I jokingly slapped her hand. Her boyfriend, Eric, laughed along and poured me a drink. Eric is an art strand student so Niki probably has little time to see him since she's a science strand. This is what I'm thinking as I quietly leave them alone and head to the pool side with my drink in hand.
I spent the time just drinking by the pool and watching everyone have fun. When it was time to go, Amelia, Niki and Eric cajoled - no, bullied me, into going with them to a restaurant before we called it a night.
That's how I found myself sitting in a restaurant at ten in the evening. I'm so tired and it's way past my bedtime. I don't notice my name being called until Niki reaches over nudges my arm.
"What's got you in the daze?"
"Tired." There's a buzz at the table that I didn't notice before and I'm instantly having a bad feeling. Amelia is nudging another of our friends called Dane and everyone is just exchanging looks, "What's up with you guys?"
"So we were wondering," Amelia starts "it's been a while since you dated Seb. Do you like someone now?"
"No, I'm not into anyone right now."
Before any more comments can be made, I fake a phone call and excuse my self from the table. The sound of them laughing and saying 'You can run but you can't hide', follows me all the way to my car. I would probably find this comical on a normal day but I'm too tired to care.
I just want to study and get into college. What's the big idea?
