**The Final 75 Days of Liang Junhuan's Life**
**October 1, 2018**
**Shanghai Mental Health Center**
**Junhuan's Room, 10 AM**
Zheng Kerling and Shawn Li stood outside Junhuan's room, watching him with concern. Through the window, they could see him smiling and playing with a soft toy panda.
Sam Li, Shawn's brother, approached them, visibly agitated.
"How can you have the nerve to come here and see him? Explain to me why you said those things to him! I had a DNA test done for Junkai and Junhuan—they're both father and son!" Sam shouted, anger evident in his voice.
"I have my own family to worry about. I'm terrified he might try to take custody of my son!" Kerling replied, anxiety creeping into his tone.
"Terrified he could fight you for custody? You really think he's capable of that? Not in this lifetime! There's no way he can challenge you anymore!" Sam retorted, his voice rising.
Shawn tightened his grip on Sam's coat. "What do you mean by that? Can you please clarify?" Shawn asked, panic in his voice.
"Thanks to all of you! If it weren't for how you treated him, he wouldn't be in this state! He cannot be labeled as mentally ill! If he stays here, he will deteriorate even faster! He's already in the late stages of bone cancer, and the cells have spread to his lungs," Sam replied, his anger morphing into despair.
"What?! When did he get bone cancer?" Kerling asked, alarmed.
"Could it be from the severe knee injury he sustained at 19?" Shawn speculated.
**Flashback to 2009**
**Tsinghua University, Beijing
January 5, 2009**
Outside the university's main gate, Kerling was crossing the street when her phone rang. Distracted, she failed to notice a speeding lorry approaching.
Junhuan, who often accompanied her, saw the danger and rushed to push her out of the way, falling beneath the lorry's path. The vehicle ran over his right knee without stopping.
Kerling hurried to his side.
"Sir! Someone, please! Call an ambulance! He's bleeding profusely!" she shouted.
Many bystanders watched, but only Shawn took action, calling for help.
"Please, send an ambulance to Tsinghua University's main entrance! A student has been hit by a lorry!" Shawn yelled into the phone.
"What's the condition of the victim?" the operator inquired.
"His right knee is bleeding heavily, and he's struggling to breathe," Shawn responded.
"Is there a medical professional nearby?" the officer asked.
"I'll get my brother; he's an intern doctor!" Shawn replied.
"Put the call on speaker mode so we can talk to someone with the victim," the officer instructed.
Shawn sprinted to the medical studies unit.
**Medical Studies Unit, Tsinghua University**
Shawn arrived, breathless. "Sam Li! Where are you?!" he shouted.
Sam emerged from his class, confused. "What's going on? Why are you yelling?"
"Junhuan was in an accident at the main gate. His leg... it's bad," Shawn stammered.
Without hesitation, Sam grabbed wooden planks from a nearby construction site and rushed with Shawn back to the scene.
Kerling was applying pressure to Junhuan's wounds, which were bleeding heavily from his leg and arm.
"Miss, are you okay? My legs and arms... they hurt so much," Junhuan murmured weakly.
"Don't worry; the ambulance is coming," Kerling reassured him.
Sam and Shawn arrived breathlessly.
"Shawn, break those planks into pieces!" Sam instructed.
Sam ripped off his inner jacket and tore it to use as a makeshift bandage, placing the wood between Junhuan's injured leg and arm.
"Where is that ambulance?! His pulse is dropping, and the weather is freezing!" Sam exclaimed, panic rising in his voice.
Junhuan grasped Sam's hand. "Please... don't tell my father I'm hurt," he whispered before losing consciousness.
Within five minutes, the ambulance arrived.
**Huaxin Hospital
Outside the Emergency Room**
"Who is the patient's relative? Please make the payment first," an administrative officer requested.
"I'll handle the payment," Kerling replied.
Frustrated, Shawn kicked a chair. "What was he thinking? He knows his health is fragile, yet he still jumped in to protect her! He followed her for almost a year and never revealed his feelings!" he vented.
"He hasn't even said hello to her? He's a highly skilled hacker and quite handsome—Zheng Kerling would definitely be interested," Sam chimed in.
"But he has a gambling-addicted father and is always sick. Who would want to be with him?" Shawn countered.
Kerling, returning from making the payment, overheard their conversation. "He likes me?" she murmured to herself in disbelief.
An hour later, Junhuan was moved to a ward, and the doctor emerged.
"Who is Liang Junhuan's relative?" the doctor inquired.
"I'm his close friend. He has no family; he's an orphan," Shawn explained.
"He has a fractured right knee and arm. He'll need to be hospitalized for three weeks," the doctor stated.
**In the Ward**
"You two stay with Junhuan. I'll grab his laptop and get dinner for him," Shawn said.
Kerling nodded in agreement.
"It's sad; he lives alone. His mother died of cancer when he was 15, and at 16, his father became a compulsive gambler, using all his earnings to pay off debts. On Junhuan's 17th birthday, his father almost sold him to a triad, forcing him into a gigolo bar. Luckily, Shawn informed me, and we managed to rescue him just in time; he had already been working there for a week. He was terrified. He's a gifted child—he learned to use a computer and hack into small companies by age 12," Sam explained.
"No wonder he seems so distant. He carries his laptop everywhere," Kerling replied.
"Before the accident, he was cheerful and full of life. He loved to smile and tell jokes, and he earned a scholarship to Tsinghua," Sam added.
