Chapter 4 - Chapter Three- The Danger Outside the Barrier

" WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!!"

After that loud sound of someone shouting, I looked around. I didn't see anything until I heard loud sounds from everywhere. The ground was shaking heavily and there seems to be something exploding from a distance.

Just by feeling the vibration from the ground, you already know who they are. Deadlings.

"Scatter!!" the commander shouts. We ran away from each other together with the vampires. The trembling was back but I still managed to get my sword and embrace myself from any attack. I looked around. Everyone was quiet they were feeling where the trolls may come from. They might show up from the ground ad from the sky.

We were all quiet when suddenly, I heard a loud noise. It was as if something had exploded. But when I looked back, it was Hunter.

My eyes widened when I saw a huge rock cracking. I didn't see what he did and how he did it. But it was a dealing lying on the ground. It must've shape-shifted to rock but no one knows how he managed to spot that.

Deadlings were monsters from a terrestrial planet called Mars. They are second to humans in the lowest power ranking. They have no minds at all. They move aggressively without thinking. They are huge and can camouflage to anything they like. They are annoying because they hide everywhere.

I don't know how Hunter managed to get there from here. I was about to get impressed when an explosion happened again. No, it was another vampire killing a deadling.

I guess that moment wasn't special at all. He just managed to spot that first than anyone else.

"North!!" the commander shouted. I looked north and a group of Deadlings was coming our way. There were 5 of them. From there, I knew I had to do something.

They get killed when the soft spot on their neck gets cut until their head is no longer connected to their body. I stood in front, the trembling on the ground went heavier and when the dealing in front stepped on the line I estimated I can jump, I did.

I jumped as high as I could to be able to get to the rocky deadling's thigh and climbed my way to his neck. The dealing didn't hit me at all. I climbed up until I made it to his neck and without delay, I sliced his neck open.

I jumped away from it. Relieved and didn't look back. I was sure killed it. But when I landed down, I heard someone shout, "YLENA!!" I looked back and saw the deadline raising its fist. its head was chopped off but was still moving.

My hair suddenly flew onto my face when something fast moved past me and in a matter of seconds, I heard a huge sound and the deadling is on the ground. It was Hunter.

Again.

"That was close, Your Majesty," he said standing on top of the deadling's chest while it was lying on the ground.

"You didn't have to do that, I can defeat it myself," I told him. I don't know why I was suddenly feeling furious about what just happened.

"I'm sorry for stealing your spotlight, but if I didn't do anything, you must be dead right now, Your Majesty,"

The tip of my sword fell on his neck. "Call me that one more time and you're done,"

Just like the last time, he held his hand up and looked at the word while smirking.

"I'm sorry about that, Ylena," but him calling my name felt even more annoying than calling me a Majesty.

I breathe in a huge amount of air and put my sword back. It was all over. 7 deadlings down. And everybody was looking at us.

"You don't use your sword like that, Hendrickson," I heard the commander say.

Fuck it.

I just looked at him. I was humiliated because of my own actions again.

"Ylena, are you okay?" Yves went to me and touched my shoulder. I felt a strange feeling of annoyance because of it and immediately pushed her hand away. She was surprised. But I was mad.

I was mad for no reason. It's because of that vampire. But even though I know I wouldn't have made it if he didn't come, I am still mad.

I faced my back on Yves and started walking. Everyone looked at me because of what I just did to Yves' hand. It was as if I just murdered her by pushing her hands away from me.

But like I always say, I couldn't care less.

"Move," I told everyone in front of me. They did what I said. I knew they were already thinking badly about me right now. But what can I say? I have always been a bad person.

My gaze met Hunter's.

And he was smiling.

The commander said we'll continue walking to the base. I followed silently still holding onto my feelings inside of me.

"That much just by stealing your show? You're the worst your, Majesty,"

He called me that again. And those words just speak about how bad of a person I am. But I didn't say anything. It was true after all. I just walked past him and went to where I was supposed to be standing.

I glanced at him after getting on to my position and he looked amused. I really hate that he seems to be having fun playing with me. Amusement flashed on his face for a few seconds and then it turned into that huge annoying smile.

He murmured something before walking next to me.

And I also hate the fact that I cannot distance myself away from him because we're a pair in combat and we cannot go far from each other.

As we continued walking to the nearest base together by groups, instead of minding other's business, I started wondering how the deadlings within the protection of our system. There are 4 main bases scattered around the main wall. One in the north, south, west, and east. And to protect the wall from everyone trying to pass by our borders, 4 mini bases were standing in between those main bases. There is no way a group of tall and huge deadlings could come into our territory unless a base fell down and let them in.

We've been keeping the bases for centuries and there is no way those deadlings had been in this territory since day one. I looked at the commander. he was walking calm in between a couple of combat pairs. There is no sign of panic or anything. I've started to wonder if it was only me who have been wondering about how those deadlings managed to enter our territory and get close to the wall.

That could've been dangerous if we put down the barrier to get out and they started attacking the wall.

I looked around to see if something is weird or if somebody has been wondering about this but my eyes caught Hunter's. "You want to go around the base with me later, Ylena?" he suddenly asked.

"And why would I go around the base with you?" I asked him. The way he was talking right now is irritating me.

"Why not?" he asked. He tilted his head to look at my face when I tried hard to keep my eyes and attention away from him.

"I don't want to," I said. I looked at the Commander and finally got the urge to come to him and ask why it happened. I walked past Hunter and started walking to the commander. I know I shouldn't walk away from my post but the coast seems clear. "Commander," I called him. He stopped and looked back at me.

I heard footsteps following me, I already know it was Hunter being nosy. I looked back a little to confirm it and I was right.

"I wanted to ask you something," I told the commander surrendering by the fact that there is no point pushing hunter away.

"You cannot just leave your post, Hendrickson," he told me. Everybody stopped when he stopped walking and all eyes were on me.

"Did something happen to one of our bases?" I asked him. Commander Mason's face grew suddenly irritated by my question. My eyes were almost narrowed by his sudden reaction.

"Why do you ask, Hendrickson?" he asked me his tone of voice raising up.

"I just wanted to ask--"

"No," he answered firmly. "And why?" he seemed like he just answered my question because he wanted to know why.

The way he got irritated by my question made me not tell him the reason why I asked. "I just want to know," I just said. he narrowed his eyes on me. I know why, it's because he is thinking that I was thinking of something. But before he could read anything else on me, I let him face my back. I saw Hunter's eyes right after turn away. I just looked at him and went back to my position.

A few seconds later, he came back with me. "You were thinking about how the dealings got in, am I right?"

The question made me look at him immediately. He was looking at me with a smirk. "And?" I asked as if I wasn't glad that somebody was thinking the same way as I do.

Given that nothing had happened on any of our bases is suspicious. Because if no base was taken down, then who let them in?

"Deadlings went for us after we got out of the barrier. Then they must've been in the territory for hours since then. And if one base was taken down and deadlings went in, then they shouldn't have taken down the barrier and opened the gates for us to go out," he told me. With a voice, only I was meant to hear.

I haven't thought of that. I looked at him and he was giving me that playful and slightly arrogant smirk. I take the fact that he was smart enough to know that. He must've found it out when deadlings started coming for us.

I never thought he could think as deeply as I could. Very well, Vampire. I'm impressed.
