Chapter 1 - Falling Apart

Adelaide's POV

My parents put me up for adoption when I was two years old; they left me. Clarissa was the one who decided to adopt me. Since then, she's been my everything. I love her more than anything. She said I had a necklace around my neck which said, Adelaide. It's my name now.

I never had the urge to know my parents. I was okay without them but never understood what the necklace meant. I wear it every day; I don't blame my parents for leaving me. They probably had a reason and, I want to find out what it was.

I'm always around by a lot of people, very extroverted and a people person. I have never been the one to lose friends. I had one friend who hated people; he loved being by himself but, he didn't despise my company. No matter how many friends I had, he was the only one who understood me at a deeper level, as no one else. He's like family.

Zayn Malik, my childhood best friend, the most badass yet sweet person I've ever met. No one could ever separate us. We loved each other a lot. Yet lately, we didn't talk much. He just cut me off. I missed him, missed how open I could be with him and how I didn't have to put up a show in front of him. I missed us.

And that's what brings me to his house right now. I rang the doorbell.

"Hi, honey!" Mrs. Malik opened the door and greeted with a welcoming smile on her face. "Hey, Trisha," I said and smiled back, "Is Zayn home?" I asked, hoping she says yes. She nodded in reply and let me in.

I made my way to his room and saw him sitting on the edge of his bed. The mattress slightly dipped where he sat, and the sheets quite ruffled. The setting sun made his light brown skin look golden brown.

I went ahead and took a seat beside him; he turned his head towards me acknowledging, my presence.

"What're you doing here?" he said coldly. Is that the only thing he could bring himself to say? Why would he do that? Does he hate me so much now? Okay, stop Adelaide, stop these questions.

"Hello to you too, Zayn!" I reply in a sarcastic tone.

"You didn't answer my question." Is he kidding me right now?

"Well, what does it look like I'm doing? I came here to talk to you, but apparently, you're not in the mood."

"You're right, I'm not," he said, still no emotion on his face, "So you can go now."

What? I tried to be sweet, but Zayn doesn't even care about me. I lost my temper and yelled at him, "What is wrong with you? Why are you acting like this? I only want us to go back to normal. But if you wanna be a jerk then, I'll happily leave you alone."

I turn around to leave his room but, then I feel a tight grip on my wrist. It's Zayn. He pulls harder so that I'm facing him; I could see guilt in his eyes. I never admitted it, but we had many moments where he gave me butterflies; this was one of them. But don't want to accept that I like him. Wait, no, I don't.

"I'm sorry, love." he said as I refuse to face him, "I missed you, but you seemed very busy with your other friends."

I started regretting everything I said. Zayn took my chin in his left hand, his right still gripping my wrist, and turned my face towards him, making me look up to him.

"Still mad?"

"No, guilty," I replied, avoiding eye contact, "and sorry."

"Hey, it's okay. You don't have to be sorry. But you still have to go."

"I have to what?" Did he tell me to go? Again?! I freed my hand from his grasp and let off all the steam, "You know what, Zayn? You can go fuck yourself; I can't do this anymore. You're the worst best friend ever. You don't fucking deserve-"

I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard him growl, literally growl; his eyes turned red, he flashed two sharp canines at me. I didn't understand what was going on; he seemed like an animal but, I wasn't scared. I couldn't comprehend what was going on. I just wanted to run away from here and, that's what I did. I heard his mom enter the room as I dashed out of it getting teary-eyed and anger still boiling inside me.

Zayn's POV

Shit! I did it. I exactly did what I was afraid of doing. I scared her away. She's right; I'm the worst best friend ever. I'm going to end up hurting her. I have to stay away from her. It's is all so wrong.

"What happened, Zayn?" Mum came and sat beside me; and put her hand around my shoulder.

"I messed up, Mum. I should've let her go. I-" I stopped mid-sentence as she shushed me.

"You didn't mess up. Tell Addie the truth tomorrow. She is a great girl; I'm sure she'll understand." Mum said, trying to calm me down.

"But..."

"No buts. Be honest and patient. Trust me, you won't hurt Adelaide, and she won't leave you."

I just nodded in reply as mum left my room.

***Time Skip To Adelaide's House***

Adelaide's POV

I opened the door and walked into my house, slamming it back to close it. I knew I startled aunt Clarissa but, I couldn't care less right now; I heard her call my name but ignored it. I opened the white door which led to my room and slammed it hard, causing a few photo frames to shake. I sat on the corner of my perfectly made bed and tried to understand what had just happened. I glanced at the clock; it was 8:03 pm already. I wanted to forget all of this but, I figured I should think about this later.

At the moment, I was hungry and late for dinner. Clarissa's going to be upset. I went downstairs and decided I'll first apologize to her.

"Hey, I'm sorry for uh, the door slamming, being late and all."

"It's alright. You're just a few minutes late. But my actual concern is why you're so angry. Mind telling me?" Aunt Clarissa is the sweetest, yet I couldn't tell her about Zayn. Heck, even I don't know what's going with him.

"Uh, nothing. I just got a bit irritated about something. It's all good now." I lied through my teeth and smiled, trying to sound convincing.

She mumbled a small okay and started serving me some food.

***Time Skip To Adelaide's Room (After Dinner)***

It's 9:00 pm now. I'm fucking pissed. I've lost my mind, and I want to scream, cry, sleep, and beat Zayn's arse for being a jerk. I crawled under the blanket and closed my eyes, hoping I'd fall asleep.

It had been a minute or two since I went to bed when I heard a knock on my window. I turned my head to see who was there, but I saw no one. Now I heard another knock, this time I heard someone whisper "Della" again and again. 'Della', that's what Zayn calls me! I got off the bed and opened the window to see Zayn hanging from there. He jumped in, covered my mouth, and closed the window.

I removed his hand and whisper shouted, "What the hell are you doing here?."

"I'm sorry, Della. I- I have some explaining to do. I uh-" He was about to say something when we heard footsteps. I quickly told him to hide under the bed and laid down as soon as possible.

"Hey, Addie. Were you sleeping?" Aunt Clarissa asked, opening the door enough for her to step in.

"No, I just came to bed. Why are you here right now? Any problem?" I answered, trying to stay calm.

"No, I just wanted to check on you and let you know that Uncle Ben is coming home tomorrow."

"Oh, that's great! Umm, good night." I said, ending the conversation.

"Good night, honey." She replied in a sweet tone and closed the door behind her.

I stood up from the bed, told Zayn to come out, and told him to continue.

"I'll tell you tomorrow, after school. Meet me at our spot!" He said, rushing towards the window; he was fast. But I just grabbed his arm, trying to stop him. He was surprised, though I didn't know why but I didn't care either.

"Then why'd you come here? Just tell me this is some sick joke and get over with it."

"Tomorrow, love." He just smiled, kissed my cheek, and wait, what? Did he kiss me? I'm dreaming, this is a nightmare, and I'm going to pretend it didn't happen.

My world's falling apart. But, right now, I'll go to sleep.
