Chapter 1 - <1> A Crack In Space And Time

He stared into the crevasse with longing, it hurt. It all hurt. Nothing was left not a relative nor acquaintance, a dollar or cent worth spending. To him it all became, Worthless.

His cries and wailing were all but rendered silent before the endless crevasse, the energy siphoned from the air. His outward sorrow was reduced to naught. He tried to move but all attempts to produce motion were fruitless.

Stuck in position, one hand clutching a small branch the other clenched his phone by his side. The ground complained, his weight straining the small overhang he knelt upon, frozen in place, he gazed lifelessly downwards crevasse.

The dirt below him slowly crumbled but he didn't react. His mind was hazy and he did know what to do anymore. Where would he go back to? Who would he go back to? He no longer had a purpose, no desires, no hopes. A sudden noise alerted him behind him was a group of men all wore a weird tactical garb that looked similar to a special forces uniform.

He froze, his body tensed, he knew they were after him, but they continued to walk forward looking around like they hadn't seen him. He looked at them as they moved not once glancing at him, as if he wasn't there, his body relaxed his tears drying.

He was confused the men were now right in-front of him one of them was even looking down into the crevasse. Out of interest he spoke "Hello?" After loudly crying for so long his voice was now dry, unstable and shaky. He was confused further when not only did they not speak or look in his direction they just didn't react at all. Instead one of the men at the edge spoke.

"Fuck that's deep", "It's so dark I can't see anything" one said shining a light into the crevasse. Another replied with "Just stay clear, this isn't part of the job we need to find him" another man piped up "Understood".

It was a shock to him when one of them took a step into the ledge and he was on, and caused it to become even more unstable, so much so that the man immediately retracted his weight from the ledge after noticing a now very prominent crack in the ground that didn't stop growing and said "Use caution the ground around here is unstable" but the boy didn't notice the crack forming below him.

He just heard the sound of rocks falling and assumed that the man was scared. In this moment he laughed not because it was funny no he was nervous and stressed, this laughter was sad and anxious. The sound of rocks didn't stop, the ground below him tilted to an unnatural angle, he stopped laughing when the men backed up.

He started slipping his mind was still a mess and at this point he didn't have any care in the world and just let gravity do it's job. Forgetting about the men he turned around to look into the crevasse he once again was sucked into his mind.

The pain the loss the loneliness, it all came rushing back reducing him into a weak, sobbing mess. The ground beneath him was slipping away. The boy was to broken to react as the ground beneath him separated itself from solid ground.

For a moment the boy noticed and panicked, but soon was swept away from the situation by his grief and sorrow. He was falling, the men still didn't notice the boy's existence only speaking to each other to get themselves moving on from the crevasse.

The boy's mind suddenly cleared, the alarming sensation of being in a free fall now occupying his mind. As he fell further into the crevasse it seemed as-though the light from the sun stopped at one point not fading, just stopping. The light seemed to disappear and cease all refraction turning into a void, the light around him gone, as he fell as if someone was dimming a light, the light on his body slowly faded until he couldn't see his own nose.

Only the light of the sun remained, bright enough to blind him from the sky, but it was unable to warm his face. It almost seemed distant. The crevasse had turned into a void that seemed to be encompassing him completely. He stared up at the sun.

// CRACK //

The undefined sound of something cracking sounded from the sky. A formless dark mass seemed to be encroaching on the edges of the remaining light shining from above the entrance of the crevasse. Suddenly the entrance above him cracked? 'No this can't be right' he thought but the space located at the entrance above him seemed to be cracking and shattering in some places.

At this point trying to look out of the crevasse was like looking through a cracked window. The light of the sun started fading, it hadn't moved an inch since he had reached the void. The window was slowly fading the crystalline cracks were eventually the only remaining evidence of where he had come from.

The crystalline cracks were now hard to see against the black void but eventually even they faded and left him alone. Not long after he could see himself again though there was no light source.

It was quiet.
