After a series of what he could only describe as torture, Finn woke up to find himself in an entirely different place.
Over the weeks he had experienced two things. A rapid growth spurt and weird dreams as he referred to them.
Right now he looked like a one-year-old but it had only been two months since he was born.
Things didn't seem to turn out like how they would in his previous lives. He had anticipated his death to come a month before now but that didn't happen.
And on top of that, he recently discovered that somehow, he had been born a vampire. Given his current growth spurts and spontaneous hunger for blood, it did make sense that he was this way.
For the first time in his life, things appeared to be going just as he wanted. Maybe not how he wanted but he welcomed the change and was more than glad to be finally born CORRECTLY, as he would put it.
His growth spurts came with a number of things. Each time he grew, something different was added to his general vampire repertoire. At first, it started with his ability to see clearly in the dark. Then it went on to him clawing at his older sister, Jaun. This part he admitted was never an accident but a conscious act. But then again, vampires had fast healing.
And in the long run, no harm had been done to Juan as she had been healed up completely from it, at a very fast pace at that.
Finn although gaining more attributes along the way that made him more and more of a vampire wasn't all too excited about it.
"Does this mean I will be stuck in this hell hole all my life? Having to live my life here is not too far from being dead. These people, their lies fill the air. Every morning I wake up to cheers and warm-hearted hugs. But by accident, if I had been born slightly different, would I still be alive now? Would this "love" they say they feel for me still exist? I know it's all a farce. They play themselves thinking they are playing me. And maybe this new form is only temporary. So before they get to me, I'll have to get to them first" and just then a smile could be seen etched on his face.
He had grown now and taken just the look a vampire would have. Even as a small kid, he looked exceptionally handsome. Perhaps adorable was the right word. He was regarded as special because of his eyes.
His left eye had a red ring around his iris that matched the colour of his now favourite meal, blood. His right eye on the other hand had a golden circle around the iris. A contrasting pair that always brought the attention of anyone who caught a glance at him whenever he was out with his mother.
He hated being in the vampire nest but perhaps what he hated more than anything was having to play with his age mates that he regarded as "witless kids". The sight of their shenanigans simply was appalling to him and instead of having a stroll around the entire nest area that turned out to be not what he had last seen in his previous life, he settled in his room and did something else.
He would rather trade the life of the vibrant yet disturbingly quiet atmosphere of the nest for what he described as his "Finn time".
The vampire nest had a host of things that could surely catch the interest of a kid his age. But given he wasn't exactly a kid, to begin with, he passed on that opportunity.
He did admit to being mesmerized by the fast change that had occurred since his last death. It seemed to have been a while before he got brought back to the world. Some of the structures in place now he didn't recognise.
He knew the vampires built their houses straight into the cave walls. It was like making a cave of their own while in a cave. He likened their love for darkness to bats and referred to them that way in his mind.
They were usually all dressed in black with sweeping gowns across the floor. Even now he hated the thought of looking at himself as he wore one of those too. His mother had gotten him a much more colourful one as he had sighted his resentment for black. Black to him was the colour of death and while he missed the hollow silence that came with it, he would rather not be reminded of it too often.
The vampire nest today was especially louder than usual. The vampires were out of their homes and walking to a central point.
Two stair paths connected the long never-ending rows of hollow caves turned into houses by the vampires. The houses themselves racked up to the apex of the cave they were in.
When one looked up, it looked more like the inside of a mountain. Yet there were no cramped spaces and the walls looked to have been even out and smoothened.
The whole nest looked to have been built in a conical shape that had the bottom wider than the top. Taking the conical shape to look like a pyramid from a direct view, one could see there were layers on the walls of the cave. On every layer were houses that spanned up to 100 and went round the cave.
Now they were all taking the rock stairway to the bottom of the nest. This place, unlike many other places, was lit up with light and hundreds upon hundreds of vampires dressed in all black gathered at a particular scene.
Finn had only woken up to discover he was in the midst of these people that wreaked stale blood. His sense of smell had also gone way above average. Picking up little details like this was easy for him.
His mother detecting he was awake dropped him to stand on the ground as she held his sister at the other side of her by the hand and him also.
Finn normally would have protested to be taken back inside. But something piqued his interest. It was not the large crowd, far from that. He hated these bats that called themselves superior beings.
No, rather it was the strange smell he had picked up. And much like everyone else, his gaze was now fixed in the direction he perceived it coming from.
Straight away, he had lost control of himself and didn't know when he dug his sharp claws straight into his mother's wrist.
Blood spilt and his mother had taken note that he was unaware of what he was doing. She let go of his hand knowing that restricting a youngling in situations like what was going on wasn't such a good idea.
As in front of them now, fresh blood was being delivered. Straight from the source, humans.
