ALEXIS' POV
It's been a week since the incident, and I've spent more time searching for signs of abnormalities than watching over Selene herself. If my suspicion was right, then lots of terrible things were bound to happen, it could affect more than the mundanes, even the council knew this.
Father hadn't gotten a response from Lucien after the last time they communicated. Lucien, being the man that he was, could only be reached when he wanted to be. He was one of the ancient ones; a Trueblood who was a prominent member of the council that managed the affairs between us and the mundanes.
The main reason for the creation of the council was to manage our relationship with the mundanes; hiding us in plain sight as our legacy cannot be unearthed. The council was the rogues haven't made it their responsibility to annihilate the mundane species; if they did, how then would we survive? I brushed off my conflicted thoughts after deciding to see Selene; I had drifted off course, and I needed to know what she was up to.
Brownston wasn't that much of a fortress, its gates were left open but of course, with proper scrutiny before anyone could walk in. I showed my ID to the security official as he scanned me thoroughly with his eyes; it's not like he could see anything unusual anyways. What a pathetic bunch. It was a little past eleven pm, I made my way to the hostel building.
"I'm gonna kill her, I'm gonna tear her hair out and gouge her f**king eyeballs from her pathetic face!"
I heard someone cuss loudly, I moved closer to the direction of the sound. The figure crouched behind a low wall, aggressively throwing its hands in the air. With every step, the image became clearer. It was the same mundane I had an encounter with on the first day, why was she everywhere!?
I'd just ignore her as I had always done, but she won't stop cussing and swearing, I didn't need any of that. I knew better than to interfere in a mundane's business, right?
"I'm going to punch that smile off her fucking face!" She yelled again punching the air before standing to her feet, she hung her bag on her shoulder and walked out of the dark spot she was into the light where I saw her clearly now.
Okay, this was interesting and... I'm leaving.
Then I saw it, oh jeez.
"Are you always bleeding anytime I see you?"
She jolts at the awareness of my presence and settled into a fighting position. Her small fists were balled, her legs slightly apart. She, however, was ready to throw punches.
This mundane was interesting, does she really think she can take on me with those frail hands?
She returned to her initial position when she saw my face, her eyes widened and the corner of her lips tugged as she sought the right words to say.
"Bleeding?" She questioned simultaneously looking at the exposed parts of her body.
"Period blood," I said to her, I knew how embarrassing this was for numerous mundane females; I'd read about it.
I've never seen a person's eyes grow wide like hers just did, then in a split second, her face had normalcy restored.
"Well, that happens," She said almost nonchalantly.
"Almost" because I could hear the quickened thuds of her heart. She was nervous, but she hid it well.
"And it happened on this unfortunate day that my egocentric roommate locked me out, how lucky am I, uh?" She asked no one in particular.
Sad, but not my business. I had no intention of getting entangled in anyone's mess.
"Here," I handed her my jacket, use this to cover up till you find a solution."
What are you doing, Alexis?
She would find something, right? She had to have a friend or something who could help her out. I was here for Selene.
She mouthed a thank you and wrapped it around her waist.
I watched her shoulders slouch with her eyes still glued to the ground as her leg drew patterns in the sand, my heart sank a little with sympathy for her. The only thing humans were exceptional at was hurting one another, just like this miserable one that stood in front of me.
"Thanks for your help," she muttered away walking back into the darkness she was before.
Oh, boy.
"Can you call someone for help?" I asked. She threw her arms in the air before responding.
"I don't have my cellphone," she yelled back, her voice covering the distance between us.
"Have you tried talking to the security officials?" I questioned again, louder this time.
"They think I'm lying, he agrees I'm a student here but doesn't believe that I fucking live here since I don't have a pass yet," she hollered again.
She didn't have to, I could hear her perfectly even if it was just a mumble.
"Why don't you have a pass?"
I had other questions too, like why didn't she have a key? Why can't she find the nearest hotel to stay overnight?
Why was she out this late in the first place?
"Because..." She walked forward again, dusting her knees. "I offered to the security something more pleasant and it was effective till today. Besides, it's way easier than having to fill forms to get the hostel pass."
"What did you offer the security officials?"
"A pretty smile." She said before erupting into a burst of short laughter.
This one really amused me, she's the second to pique my interest this way.
"I live a few blocks away from school if you don't mind staying till tomorrow." what?!
"I mean, it's less dangerous..." My voice trailed into nothing.
What? What in the actual fuck did I just say? The words slipped out a little too fast before I could swallow them. I invited a mundane...to my apartment, to stay overnight! I had to be the dumbest vampire I knew.
I watched her contemplate, the rise and fall of her brows as she weighed her options. The increasing pace of her heartbeat was enough reason to know that she was nervous.
"What's your name?" She asked a hint of curiosity in her voice.
I've never had to introduce myself formally to my kind, not to talk of a mundane but here I was, pondering on the most pleasant way to say my name to a girl I barely knew.
"Alexis, my name is Alexis."
"Alexis," she echoed, tasting the word in her mouth. "I'm Dawn."
Uh- is there something I should say after this?
The sound of silence lingered around us filling the atmosphere with an unusually tense ambience. Its potency was sliced through by her gentle voice.
"Okay," she said finally. "can I stop by the convenience store on our way?"
She actually agreed, to go with me, a stranger that she's been in unfortunate events with. What was this stupid bravery?
My thoughts must have been visible on my face when I heard her next response.
"You don't look that much of a threat anyways, compared to my taekwondo skills," she beamed. "I took lessons in my eleventh grade."
That may have been the nicest thing someone has said to me, a warm sensation buzzed through my chest while I released a low chortle. She didn't seem terrified of me, something about that was pleasing, weirdly.
"Sure."
~~
I watched her ponytail bouncing as she hopped into the convenience store, I followed shortly, gaping at her fingers while she trailed them through the racks, that held different products on display, in search of what she wanted.
"There!" She exclaimed before picking out the product of her choice. She beamed at me who stood a few away from where she was. "If you have a girlfriend, this one's the best, so comfy." She held it close to her chest like an infant.
Of course, she, needed a sanitary product, how dumb was I? I merely nodded at her remark.
"Also, you have to lend me some cash? I left my card in my room too."
"Sure," I responded awkwardly. Money was never a problem. "Is there anything else you'd want?" I asked. "Since you're going to pay back anyway," I quickly added so she doesn't think this was me trying to take advantage of her.
Why was I trying to make a good impression?
She pressed her lips together and her eyebrows furrowed as she turned like clockwork looking around the store till her eyes fell on the section where confectioneries and snacks were sequentially arranged.
"Um, yeah, I love latelate-nightcks." She cooed and proceeded to collect them. "What about you? Do you want anything?"
I shook my head.
The cashier had a smile plastered on her face all through ringing all we purchased.
"She's really cute," she mumbled to me with a cheeky smile. "Your girlfriend."
What? No, no. No, this wasn't anything like that in the slightest. It wasn't.
All these protests happened in my head, my face had a blank expression and my mouth won't convey the words. I didn't want to make much of her misunderstanding, mundanes are all gullible anyways.
This was going to be a long night.
