Chapter 17 - Fleeing Through Germany

Life doesn't always go according to plan, this was one of those moments.

The sky was clear, not a bird in sight, dusty, rugged, and rocky, dessert spread as far as the eye could see, the entire scene would look completely barren if it weren't for the line of vehicles slowly driving along a dirt road.

Few of the vehicles were meant for offroading, thus the slow pace, it was infuriating at times

Why did we have to go this way in the first place?

Sure, fleeing isn't the most comfortable of things to do, I was fine with that, but why did we go THIS way, I mean fleeing to Germany? really? I can't help but have a bad feeling about this, though...I don't remember Germany have any desert..!

My head suddenly whacked against the glass window of our gray and white Chevy Suburban, followed by a large clunk as the bottom of the car scrapes against some rock.

Who the hell decided to let Mom drive??!

Out of all the drivers in the family she is the most uncomfortable with even backing up, let alone driving through difficult rocky terrain!

Almost on queue, we came to a halt, and Dad and Mom quickly switched places, I couldn't guess why, I had offered to take over for her several times at her refusal, and I had even suggested Dad take over to no avail.

Rolling down the window I looked out and immediately found the answer, the road, at this point was at the top of a hill, were it immediately dropped down extremely steeply before going right back up.

Add in all the large rocks, pools of water and mud, along with the fact that the line of cars stopped right at the bottom of the dip and this was going to prove to be a VERY difficult section of the road.

We would need speed to get through the mud and up the hill after the dip, and yet the rocks and line of cars made sure it would be next to impossible, even Dad was going to have a hard time.

Though as long as he just waits for the line to move forwards he will be able to pull it off.

After several minuets the line had finally gotten to the top of the hill just a few more and we would be able to mov-

"Everyone hold on! this is going to be bumpy!" Dad said interrupting my thoughts while destroying my faith in his driving.

"Damn it! just wait for the line to move!" I yelled out, though it went unheeded as Dad just drove forwards slowly, down into the dip.

And just like I thought, after we made it through the rocks and into the dip we started losing traction as we went through the mud and tried to drive up the steep hill.

I barely held in my "I told you so!" and within a minute someone had stopped behind us and we were stuck.

After a few awhile of us arguing it was finally decided that Dad would go and ask someone in front to help pull us up.

Lucky for us, they agreed, and even luckier, they had a large heavy duty pick up truck, getting us up the hill that way turned out to be easier than I expected.

At the top the "road" looked to head straight for a ways, so we just had to slowly move forwards with the line.

At this thought I felt myself calm down, turning back to my window, intent on leaning against it for a quick nap.

Only, when I looked straight out my window, rather then the rocky desert I expected, a giant turquoise glass and metal sphere was in the air, with long closed slides going every which way, some being colored and others clear, though I could see that people were in them and seemed to be using them to go to the giant sphere.

From what I could see the sphere was a giant futuristic looking city.

Unsurprisingly my family noticed it as well, and seeing as how the line was moving way extremely slow right now we got the go ahead to check out the city and see if it was our destination, though i just wanted to get out of the car for awhile and see what this super advanced looking city could teach me.

Getting out of the car, I walked to the cliff and saw a slide close by, just waiting for me to enter.

After convincing myself that it was safe because no one else seemed to be getting stuck, I took a breath, and jumped down the slide.

It took a bit of effort to calm myself down, after which I found myself having fun, although it didn't make sense, for some reason even when going up, I kept sliding as though I was going down hill, and every now and then there was a clear segment through which I could see my siblings doing fine, as well as my location.

After some time had past something seemed strange, namely the slide I was in had covered way more distance than was needed to get to the city.

After noticing this I concluded that there must be someway to chose to leave, I had seen people before who's slides suddenly changed directions and went up, maybe I could do the same?

Concentrating I tried to will myself up to the city, and after a few minuets of trying, nothing happened.

And just when I gave up I suddenly felt the slide change and boom!

My head whacked against the window, coming to suddenly was never fun, with a grimace, I took in my surroundings, I was back in the Chevy suburban we were no longer in the desert, or well we were at the edge of it anyway.

Deciding that that strange slides and the city in a sphere, were just a dream I ignored it and focused on our current situation, we were still in the line, though with the roads being less rocky and a lot more flat areas, we were moving much faster.

Though that wasn't saying much, we were still going no faster then 10kmh, but it was still much better, plus every now and then there would be a tree or some grass, not nearly as dull.

As we drove over a hill we saw the first sign of civilization

An electricity pole

"sigh"

With that sight I couldn't help but let out a sigh, it finally felt like we actually were headed somewhere, rather than being stuck in and endless line in a desolate land.

Time past by much smoother then before, and before I knew it, we split off, Mom and my younger siblings would take the Chevy and slip through the border into Germany, and me, Dad and my older brother would go through the check points, legally, apparently they were limiting the number of people per car who could enter.

Soon enough I found myself driving my modded Subaru down the highway towards a heavily guarded country border.

The closer we got the more anxious I felt, and as the border came into view my anxiety sky rocketed.

Just as I felt like I would explode, a blue Lamborghini pulled up along side me, the driver of which, I somewhat recognized, though I didn't know from where.

Then on the other side a green Corvette pulled up, and looking around I realized that I was in the middle of some sort of rich kid gathering.

Deciding to slow down and let them pass, I was surprised when they slowed down with me, looking back at the guy in the Lambo I saw get gesture to pull over at a pullout on the side of the road, wanting to procrastinate passing the check point for as long as I could, I pulled over with them, may as well see what they want right?

I soon found myself in a conversation about cars with the guy in the Lambo, turned out he and his rich friends had gone out on a trip outside of Germany.

After finding out that I didn't have any German legal documents he offered to use his crew as cover to get through the check point, after discussing it with my Dad and older brother, with their agreement, I accepted the offer.

It was easier than I though possible, we simply drove through, had a quick chat with an officer, and just like that we were on the road again, this time heading to what was going to be our, hopefully permanent home.

Looking out along the road, I couldn't help feeling a bit hot.... almost like a desert, but there was literal snow around, though mostly melted we were NOT in a desert anymore.

Rolling over I tried to turn on the cars AC but as I reached for it my fingers hit my dresser, waking me up.
