Chapter 71 - No Quarter

The battle escalated as the screams on both sides grew far louder. Suddenly, the line of Cadin's men, who had advanced further, began moving back. The remaining soldiers started forcing them back with their sheer numbers, soldiers from the stairwell continued pouring in to join.

A few of Cadin's men fell dead as swords drove through gaps of the shield wall, digging deep into their bodies and through their leather armor, many continued standing, the anger and eagerness to fight still burning inside them. They pushed back, the line of opposing waves stopping where they stood, Cadin's men continued driving their swords through, killing more while the enemy did the same.

Cadin joined in with his men, moving with them with a shield and sword in hand, thrusting his sword back and forth, hearing the sudden cries of soldiers on the other hand as his sword became more and more bloody with each pull.

'Doesn't seem like they're willing to surrender.' Cadin understood the situation, continuing to kill more soldiers until he could see arms and limbs beneath his boots, a pile of corpses growing under them.

After a minute, he yelled out to all his soldiers. "Men! Push them back, kill them all! Leave none standing!" After speaking, he could hear the yell of his men deafen the enemy's, immediately the wall began moving forward with great force, shocking Cadin as he moved forward with them. The defenders were pushed back and began moving towards the bridges, mercilessly killed by Cadin's soldiers.

Small pockets of defenders began appearing as the wall moved quicker, Cadin's men surrounded small groups separated from the main force, massacred in seconds.

The defenders began stepping foot onto the bridge, Cadin glanced at the platform beyond and the bridge itself. A unit of his men was already standing on that platform, fighting back the enemy and moving a few onto the bridge.

"Soldiers do not step on the bridge!" Cadin yelled. The formations stopped upon reaching the first plank of the bridge. Cadin moved out of the shield cover, he looked at the tied ropes holding the bridge, looking back at the soldiers, their faces were still filled with anger and fury, bloodied and injured. Despite losing so many, surprising Cadin.

He raised his sword up, in a swift motion, he sent it down onto the short pole holding the rope. It cut loose almost immediately. The bridge in front of him wobbled violently for a few seconds, a few soldiers falling from the sides.

After taking one more swing at the other rope. The bridge fell, a sudden mass of cries and shouts as soldiers fell in the air, heading to the ground. The soldiers on the other side, began moving to the other bridge, advancing to the other platforms, providing support to their allies.

The men fell in loud thumps, their metal weapons scattering and the screams falling silent almost immediately. Cadin looked down. A mound of corpses lay on the pathway below him, none were moving with blood, swords, bows, shields, and splotches of blood surrounding it.

Cadin turned to the soldiers behind him, "Use the other bridge. Join with the others and kill all you can, they show no signs of surrender." The line of shields dismantled, soldiers began running on the bridge.

Halfway to the next platform, an arrow struck the ropes, forcing the bridge to turn to the side. BEfore Cadin could look at what caused it, another arrow struck, sending the bridge down. Soldiers feel while a few held onto the boards for dear life. Soldiers on the other platform tried helping them.

Each of the soldiers began falling, impaled by an arrow to the back as they fell to their deaths. The soldiers on the other platform looked up, immediately forming a wall of shields along with soldiers behind them to fire arrows.

Cadin looked up, a white cloaked individual looked down, jumping down from the branch he stood on. He landed on the platform, revealing his face. The same boy fought in the other camp, donning a white cloak with cleaned short blades in both hands.

"All you do is enslave and take, now though, what can you take? I brought them together, and they will die for me. I will not let you go any further, further in the forest to take the rest off them. You will die, on this platform, bleeding in a puddle of your worthless blood!" He shouted, looking up with hatred and fury.

From above, more dropped down onto the platform, landing on different parts of it. One of the hooded fighters looked to Cadin. Foren started with a smirk, holding his blade.

The soldiers positioned themselves to face the platform, finishing off the remaining defenders.

The boy took 2 steps, and a small group of other soldiers jumped down to him, all bearing the same white cloaks. On the other platforms, soldiers were ready to fire, but before they could release, Cadin raised his hand.

In a few moments, without speaking, the boy charged forward with his group.

Both charged at one another, meeting with the clashing of swords, sparks flew in the air as Cadin parried the boy's blades, quickly the battle escalated as the other soldiers joined in, trying to kill one another and protecting themselves.

Cadin and the boy continued fighting one another, Cadin fought with only his sword, resting the shield behind his back as the boy continued a barrage of strikes, using both hands Cadin parried each strike, feeling the weight of the sword start to leave as adrenaline hit him, needing to kill the boy quickly.

FIghters on both sides began to fall, injured or killed as the fight continued on, the desperation becoming more and more present, their attacks became faster and faster, trying to kill one another quickly to aid who was left for their group.

Foren fought on, losing a few of his soldiers but still killing the white cloaked soldiers aiding them.

In the fight, only five remained, as they fought, the boy drove his dagger into Foren's chest, slashing at him with the other. Cadin slashed at the boy's face, he moved back, holding the dagger in front of him and running away, before Cadin could run, he looked back at Foren, he was on the ground, overwhelmed with stab wounds and cuts with the dagger still inside his chest.

One of the white cloaked soldiers was raising his sword up, the blade pointed Foren's head as he looked down in pain.

It almost felt as if time had slowed for Cadin, looking at the fighter and remembering the retreating boy.
