Chapter 61 - Arriving In Time

More attackers fell to Cadin's feet, his armor riddled with slash marks and stab wounds, a mixture of his own blood and the blood of tens of fighters stained his armor and white cloak.

The farther he went into the camp the more chaos he could see, more bodies of civilians and soldiers to burning buildings starting to crumble. The smell of iron mixed with the scent of the charred lumber, choking the air.

Cadin slashed at more attackers charging at him from all sides, coming from the homes, the broken sections of wall, and defenders they had just killed. The more he killed the deeper his anger grew, but he stayed composed, taking out his rage with each slash of his sword, spraying blood across the ground from each body as they fell with a yelp and sudden shout before turning lifeless.

He moved deeper into the camp, the second to last section of the camp. A line of crumbling buildings greeted him with a few groups of attackers running around, trying to take what they could.

'Barbarians.' He gritted his teeth.

'Hopefully this can be repaired. Where's Joken?'

He charged forward, taking down each soldier, not stopping until he reached the other side of the area. More attackers flooded inside the camp from broken parts of the walls, Cadin kept slashing at each one, his exhaustion only dulled by the adrenaline and anger inside him.

With each strike his grip tightened and his swings became stronger and stronger. The soldiers helplessly fought back against Cadin, slashing and stabbing at him from all directions but to no effect.

With the last fighter falling to the ground, his helmet clattering down with the corpses next to him, Cadin rushed to the final section of the camp, his second home.

He could feel the flames and heat become hotter as structures crumbled on the sides, some grazing him and burning parts of his body.

He stopped upon reaching the entrance of the final area. Immediately he could see the circular section besieged by attackers on all sides, all packing against each other in rushing into Cadin's building. Through some gaps, he noticed more soldiers, fighting for their lives in a shield wall, pushing back the growing crowd of attackers slamming their swords against the shields.

'How big is this attacking army?' Cadin, snapping out of a moment of confusion, ran forward to aid his soldiers. He ignored everything else, the burning buildings, the already present corpses littering the ground, mostly of attackers.

As he got nearer, fighters began noticing him, leaving the crowd and charging at Cadin.

He fought once more, slashing around at the rising number of soldiers leaving the shield wall and running to Cadin.

Each one fell after hopelessly striking Cadin, only painting his armor red and only a few managing to break through the chainmail armor. Cadin groaned with each slash, the adrenaline wearing off and being replaced by his growing anger, feeling his arms tire out but continuing to kill as much as possible.

A pile of corpses lay around Cadin, and the crowd once outnumbering the layered lines of defenders was now smaller.

Suddenly, before he could advance forward, loud shouts of rage erupted from the shields, immediately the soldiers were thrown back, and soldiers from behind ran forward, killing the downed soldiers and any that remained.

In seconds, the camp had turned silent, only hearing crackles of fire and structures behind them falling apart. Only a small few were left untouched and standing. The building Cadin resides in was untouched, and rows of soldiers began emerging, quickly securing the entire area.

Among them, Joken stepped out, his chest was stained with blood with a visible hole through his leather armor.

"My…Lord…" He walked to Cadin, clenching his gaping wound with an open hand while carrying a large shield with the other.

Cadin ran to Joken, checking on his subordinate's wounds.

"We need to get you healed up quickly." Cadin hastily said, looking around, seeing the other soldiers securing the place, many were wounded but still stood.

The door to the home opened, a flood of civilians cautiously stepped outside, quickly packing the entrance area of the building.

One of them was Sentis, glancing at Joken as he knelt on the ground in pain, he immediately pushed through, running to his fellow advisor and placing a thick cloth on his chest, wearing a satchel on his side.

"Sentis, what happened here." He looked up, Sentis' face was filled with shock, still administering what he could to Joken, herbs, leaves, and some cloth and wrapping for the wound.

Sentis looked back at Cadin after a few seconds, "I was just training some healers like you asked, then we heard commotion from the front gate. The guards standing there were killed and people with swords rushed through. The place fell into a panic almost immediately, i had to bring my healers back along with anyone else. In the end we were backed into a corner and took refuge inside your building, some continued to hide in the homes and some even joined with the soldiers, taking weapons from the forges and fighting with it." He explained, trying to keep composure with what he had just seen.

More emerged from the home, with some exiting out of unburned homes in the area.

Cadin stood up, taking in all he could see. While looking around, one of the soldiers fell down with a short groan, an arrow was buried in his stomach. His weapons falling to the ground and arrows scattering to the ground.

Looking above, two silhouettes stood on the roof of a home. Arrows began flying to Cadin,

Cadin ducked down, crawling quickly near the body of the soldier and taking his bow & arrow. Pushing himself back to a crouched position, he let loose an arrow at the two attackers.

In a few seconds, one of them fell down the roof, hitting the ground hard in front of them. Cadin turned his eyes back to the other, as he did, an arrow slammed into the side of his chest.

The silhouette jumped back down after releasing its arrow, leaving the area fully.

A few soldiers ran to Cadin, trying to help their leader as Sentis turned his attention to Cadin.

He split the arrow in half, leaving the tip stuck in his body before being moved to the home.
