Chapter 18
After Harriet was done with her call I went ahead and made mine.
The phone only rang once before Gerald Brown picked-up.
"Hello?" he said
"Hey buddy it's me," I said.
My buddy Gerald Brown is a profiler as well as a damn good soldier, we actually met two years ago under the most peculiar circumstances back in Istanbul where my job was to gather Intel on a man called Kazar Haman overlord of the underworld. At that time I had infiltrated his gang by disguising himself as one of his goons, that's when I met Gerald.
His mission was to take out Kazar and to be honest I didn't have any qualms about killing that sick murderous bastard only that when he was moving through Kazar's house I had stumbled into the corridor at the same time that he did and he mistook me for the enemy then he tried shooting me down but I'd quickly ducked into an adjacent room. Gerald came after me and after a tiresome brief battle, we got over our misunderstanding and that's when we discovered that Kazar was aware of Gerald's attack and that he wasn't in the house. Gerald and I were surrounded and though we had barely trusted each other then, we teamed up and fought against all odds and somehow we made it out alive before we reorganized ourselves and we went after Kazar together. We've been brothers in arms since then.
"What's up man," he greeted
"Well not much," yeah right like that we even true, "I just need a tiny favour from you."
"Okay…and what might that be?" he asked
"You remember that safety deposit box we have down the subway station here in Manhattan?" I said
"You mean the one where we stored our supplies for emergencies?" supplies meaning guns, I could tell that Gerald had arched one of his eyebrows even though I couldn't possibly see him.
"Yeah that's the one," I said
"What about it?"
"I sorta need the code…it's an emergency"
"What kind of emergency?"
"It's a long story and I'm pretty sure you don't have time for that," I shrugged
"Your right. I don't have the time so you better hurry the fuck up and get narrating before I decide to hang up," he warned and that earned him an exasperated sigh from me.
"You're such a pain sometimes you know that?" I said
"More than you think," he replied and that's when I went on explaining everything from Harriet's appearance to the attack and all the way to where we currently were.
"Sonofabitch," he said when I was done, "you trashed our house"
"Were you seriously not listening? It was the hit team sent to take Harriet down," I replied
"And who allowed Harriet to stay in our house ey?" he scorned
"Oh come on dude how was I supposed to know things would turn out the way they have?" I countered.
"But you knew that keeping her would definitely lead to problems," he stated bluntly and I couldn't a way back talk because admittedly, he had a point. I knew that taking in Harriet and her team would definitely lead so dire circumstances but regardless I still took the chance knowing that I was protecting a friend in need. I heard Gerald sigh at my lack of response and he said, "Look man I get it. You were helping out a friend and in all honesty I have no right to go against that." It was like he read my mind.
"So you'll help me out?" I sat whole crossing my fingers
"C4 HD X," he said, "that's the code"
"Thanks man i owe you one," I couldn't help but smile
"No need to thank me man. I only wishes I was to there personally save your ass," he said and at that we both laughed
"So I'll see you next month I guess," I said
"You better believe man" and at that he cut the call and I placed the telephone down before I got out of the booth and stood next to Harriet.
"This way," I said and ushered her across the street and onto the sidewalk where we walked pasted other pedestrians, some taking a morning stroll while others were on their way to work, we even passed others in business suits no doubt on their way to important meetings. I didn't pay them much attention instead I walked past a news stand where there was a bunch of the morning papers. I lifted one of the stack and saw the attack on my house to be on the front page. Guess things do travel fast in Manhattan, I thought as a bus whooshed past me. I set the paper back down and tipped the guy behind the news stand as thanks for letting me see the paper before we continued to walk.
We walked past a bakery then ahead we took a right turn before approaching the entrance to the underground subway station. We walked down the concrete steps and went past some security bars before we were finally in and I could hear a train depart for it's next stop.
There was a ticket booth which we walked past and then I finally saw them, the safety deposit boxes that were arranged in a way that they looked like lockers from highschool. I approached the locker that Gerald and I had for our stuff. It was labeled B20 and it had a digital keypad where I punched in the code. The locker beeped and opened up to reveal a brown gym bag.
"What's in there?" Harriet asked as I pulled out the bag and dropped it on the ground before shutting the door. II carried the bag by it's two long straps.
"Hopefully it will be enough to help us," I said and we moved out of the station the same way that we came in. We walked for about ten blocks before crossing the street that brought as up into West 35th Street where Nelson's house was.
We never bothered to knock so we just let ourselves in. We made a beeline into the living room where I placed the bag on the glass table, careful not to break it in anyway.
I then unzipped the bag to reveal it's contents. First I took out the soft mat and laid it out on the table, then I took out my SIG Sauer P226, followed by a silver desert eagle, then a Magnum and and lastly a Glock 17. I laid them all out on the table before fishing out three boxes of ammunition one was compromised of .347 Magnum bullets while the rest were for 9×19mm Parabellum rounds.
Rick and Dash had just materialized in the room and they stared at me in appraisal.
I took the SIG in my hand and said, "Lets get loading people," I said as I started off with the preps for my gun. Disassembling it, I started off by cleaning it's components. If you ever want to avoid you gun from misfiring, then that was probably the best thing one could do, from there I started off with the Parabellum rounds o had to make sure that the bullets were not coated with dust particles seeing as that would cause a gun to jam.
Rick and Dash had already set out to meet with Jerry who with the instructions from CHIEFF has been deployed to assist us at the request from both Harriet and me of course. He also brought with him some clothing that was necessary for tonight's operation. Dash was said to be with Jerry so only Rick was supposed to return with our vehicle.
By the time Rick had returned, the sun was already beginning to set. We heard an engine reeve from Nelson's driveway, it was a black Audi Q8. We all stared at it while Rick came out and headed for the trunk he brought out a red dress and he carried it over the hanger.
I could see the red properly but I could tell it was stylish.
"Well don't just stand there. Get our suits buddy," Rick said.
