Maggie was in a cheerful spirit when she left her bedroom. There was only one person she was expecting, who had promised her a bowl of freshly picked delicious cherries. That person was Mrs. Brankas, her new friend in the neighborhood.
She was humming a lovely tune as she strolled towards the sitting room when something odd struck her. Instead of Mrs. Brankas's chatty voice, what she heard was a distinctive male voice discussing with her daughter.
"This rich voice didn't belong to Reuben but to someone familiar," Maggie murmured as she approached the room unnoticed.
When her eyes finally fell on the owner of the calm and rich voice, Maggie's eyes widened in shock. She had to rub her eyes to be certain she was seeing clearly.
After she confirmed that she wasn't hallucinating, all the cheerfulness in her suddenly vanished into thin air and was replaced by fierce rage.
