Beast ranks were universal. The discovery of beast crystals came shortly after beasts came to light. Just like the beast ranks, beast crystal also follow the beast ranks. The beast crystal was just like the mitochondria of a cell, it is from the crystals that the beast draws their energy from. Not long the usefulness of beast crystals were also brought to light when a forger with an initial goal of using it as a design finds out that not only does it makes the armor more beautiful infact it increases the armor stat. This was done over and over again with the same result however.
Beast crystals were so important to mages and non mages. If a non mage should wear a set of full armour forged with high tier crystal then he would be able to kill a low tier beast no matter how weak the individual is. But if a trained and skilled soldier put on a high tier armor then he would be able to stand on the same ground with a high tier beast.
