Once the jaguar made the rash decision of burning his essence blood, a huge cloud of steam started to emit from its body, clouding the forest behind it in a huge, thick red fog.

So it wasn't far-fetched to say that however many drops of blood essence a lifeform had, it was related to how much longer it had to live!
