"We're all gonna die!" A man shouts as another crater is gouged out of the earth by the fairy's attack. Duke Avaritan stands stoically amongst the chaos as he puts together a plan in his mind. The most important thing to do is to stop the incoming explosions, so he decides to focus on that.
"Mages! Get a shield up, Now! All we need to do is break the momentum on the incoming projectile; cast your spells accordingly!" After addressing the mages, he turns to the porters. "Get the space field up! We need to buy ourselves some time to regroup!"
"Railgun!"
'Babang!'
A steel ball bearing blows past the Duke and takes an arm with it as it breezes past him. Blood pours from the wound, but the Duke hardly flinches.
"Sir, are you okay?"
"What did I just say?! Get that fucking space field up, Now!" Soil rains down on the Duke as he shouts at his men. Calm as he may seem, he dares not look back at the mangled corpses left in the crater just behind him. Even thinking about it is enough to raise the bile in his stomach.
"Sir, the mages are ready to cast their spells!" one of his captains says as he approaches.
"What are you telling me for?! Do it already!"
"Yes, sir!" The captain runs off to the nearby line of mages, pointing their staffs up at the fairy hanging in the sky.
"Deceleration zone!"
"Space break!"
"Slow!"
"Magnetic field!"
A flurry of spells is cast to nullify the momentum of the supersonic ball bearing. Deceleration Zone decreases the momentum of any object moving through the given area but only by a degree. Space break actually fractures space time to create a barrier where matter cannot pass through; while powerful, it is not impenetrable and requires a tremendous amount of magic to use. A magnetic field will reverse the pole of the magnetic field used to accelerate the steel ball bearing, but the mages aren't anywhere near as powerful as Inari. Pushing the object away with magnetism will only do so much.
"Railgun!" Inari shouts, and the humans brace for imminent death. But, doesn't come.
"Accelerate!"
The steel ball bearing hurtling towards them is slowed down by the multiple layers of spells before finally being stopped by an Acceleration spell. While this spell is the best at stopping the projectile, as all the force is directed towards a single point, the ball moves too fast to target it without first being slowed down by the other spells. The Duke's forces collectively sigh in relief as the devastating meteor falls lightly to the ground.
'Tch.'
Inari clicks her tongue after seeing her opponents successfully parry one of her attacks. She has a time limit for casting such powerful spells consecutively, and once that time is up, she'll have to leave everything to her subordinates until she can recover.
The Angel of Death takes a breath as she struggles to control the raging torrent of mana spinning around in her core. While mana will explode when compressed past a certain point, one can lower the static pressure of the mana by keeping it in motion. Using this technique, Inari has managed to store a much greater quantity of mana inside her core than she would otherwise be able to. Though doing so is taking its toll on her body, which is evident by the blood beginning to fall from her nose.
"I'm impressed." Inari projects her haughty voice down to the humans. Even if she's killed, she will never see them as her equals. "You managed to stop my Railgun. I guess I'll have to turn it up a notch!"
Her eyes open wide as a fierce smile spreads across her face. The raging torrent inside her picks up speed and storms even more violently. Her whole body is beginning to shake as she struggles to maintain the manic pace of the rotating mana.
"Try this one for size! Centrifugal Cannon!" Three magic circles appear above her, one on top of the other, with the largest of the three sandwiched between the others. The magic circles are spaced several inches from each other, and an identical set of magic circles then appears below her. It's as if Inari is using her own body to help form the cannon that can be the doom of the humans below.
Several ball bearings rise out of the hands of the nearby fairies and begin rotating around Inari. Eight spheres spin around her like tiny planets. At first, slowly and only a few feet away, the planets soon pick up their pace and revolve further and further from their axis. Ten feet, twenty feet, forty feet; by the time it reaches a one-hundred-foot radius, the ball bearings are spinning at supersonic speeds. The continuous sonic booms create a deafening typhoon of wind and sound. Many of the Duke's forces collapse to the ground while holding their ears as blood drips down the sides of their heads. The air pressure fluctuations alone are enough to burst their eardrums. Those with a seal are fortunate that the concussive force only marginally drains their hp. In a matter of seconds, the steel ball bearings have reached their maximum speed.
"Die!" With a word, Inari directs all eight projectiles toward the humans. Blood pours from her nose and ears as she points her finger downward. It took all their combined strength to stop one; there's no way they could stop all eight.
"It's ready!" The Captain of the porters shouts to the Duke.
"Get it up before we're all killed!" Duke Avaritan replies. A nearby mage uses healing magic to seal his wound, but some blood still seeps from the stump where his shoulder used to be. The blood loss is getting to him as well. He staggers in place slightly due to how lightheaded he feels.
[I can't let my men see me struggle. The only thing holding them together is my presence. If their morale breaks, we're all doomed.]
Forget the blood loss; just the pain of having his arm ripped off should be enough to steal his consciousness. Years of fighting to expand and protect his territory have left the Duke a grizzled veteran. He understands how wars can be won and lost based just on the behavior of the leaders. Now is not the time to wince in pain or cower in fear. Now is the time to smile fiercely in the face of death.
"Bring it on, you fairy bitch!" The Duke screams while pointing up at the leader of the fairies with his remaining arm. It's important that he doesn't look scared on the off chance they manage to survive her incoming attack.
""Activate!"" Several voices shout in tandem, and a white, pyramid-shaped barrier envelopes the humans just before they're annihilated.
'BABANAZRBRZBRZBRZRZ!'
A terrible cacophony of screeching and banging echoes around the clearing as the Centrifugal Cannon collides with the space field. Four spell rods are used in conjunction to cast a massive Space Break spell, just like the one some mages used earlier. The only difference is how much mana has been applied to this one. Using several large mana stones to charge the rods, several hundred people's worth of mana can be applied to the spell.
Seeing that her attack has been repelled, Inari fills with rage and prepares one last fruitless attack.
