Chapter 1 - THE ORB

There were hurried footsteps as someone came rushing in. There lay a woman who managed to open her eyes, staring at the young girl who was shaking in fright… and extreme sorrow.

Helena was trembling as she watched her mother. Her blue hazel eyes were looking at Helena who didn't know what to do. A man who was radiating power and authority was kneeling beside the woman.

"Who did this to you, Athena!" The man cried out in agony, as he looked at the frail woman before him, his voice came out more like a roar than an angry cry as his hands clutched the knife sticking out from her heart.

Athena, the goddess of War and keeper of the Orb lay on the ground at the entrance of her temple. Lord Kizia, her mate, was tearing up in sadness, his eyes never leaving her.

Even though frail, Athena was strong as the wind and her beauty was still shining in the midst of the endlessly flowing blood, as life slowly drained from her. Her pale full lips were parsed from the pain she was experiencing. Her lashes fluttered up and down as she tried to stay put, but the pain was slowly eating her life away.

"For…give… them, Kizia. D–don't…" Goddess Athena tried to let out while Kizia watched helplessly.

"Was it him?" Kizia asked angrily before continuing, "I will make him pay a hundred fold! How dare he!"

Helena watched her father in his lowest point. Although his voice was filled with anger, tears were starting to flow from the corner of his eyes. At the drop of each tear, there was a heavy rumbling in the sky above and below.

The sadness from Kizia's eyes could not be measured nor contained as he stared at the almost lifeless body of the fragile woman in his arms.

Although he was the Lord of the mystical beings, he was powerless when it came to the dagger of death. Not just him alone, every immortal was powerless.

"Take… care… of… Helena… my… Helena… don't… don't… stop her… " her voice shook violently at the pain coursing through her bloody body.

Kizia placed his hands gently on her perched lips, in a bid to hold her back from saying any more words. It looked like he didn't want her to spend her last minutes trying to spell out things that wouldn't make any sense to him. That was because he had made up his mind, he would make whoever did it, pay for every single pain his mate was suffering.

Seeing her mother was slowly losing her life force, Helena took light footsteps towards her. She stared at the dagger that was still sticking out. It looked like the dagger of death was smeared with an extra layer of silver. It was no wonder that even her mother, the strongest warrior, could not withstand it.

"Mother… mother…" Those were the only words the girl could utter.

Her beautiful molten lava eyes staring at the dying woman. She looked identical to the dying woman except for those blue eyes that seemed to bring out a ravaging blue volcano within.

"Helena… don't… don't be blinded by anger. I will be back… at… the end of… age. Take… care of your… father" Athena tried so hard to talk to her daughter. She tried lifting herself up so she could embrace her but the pain tore through her system again.

She cried out in pain as Lord Kizia tried to hold her back." You don't have to move, Athena"

"I… just… want…" she tried to talk again.

"Mother… I won't… take care of your mate by yourself! I won't let you go! Don't you dare die on me, mother! " Helena said, quickly holding her mother instead.

There was fierceness in the girl's eyes as she stared at her mother. Who dares to do this to a goddess? Was it him? But how was it possible?

Helena wanted to ask but stopped herself at the last minute. She would find out herself.

" Helena… you have to guard the orb and my precious.." Anthena said, opening her hands while staring at her daughter's face.

" Mother… you know I can't summon the orb even after all the practices. You have to stay alive or the world of mortals would be destroyed. Great damage would also be done in the immortal realm" Helena said, shaking her head. She refuses to take it!

She can't trust herself to take the responsibility of the orb.

" It's in you… Helena. Just believe in yourself and the people you have to save. There must be someone special, not worth losing. You are my little warrior princess " Her mother tightened her grip on Helena's wrist. It was like she was holding on to her last hope.

" Mother… don't… don't do this to me " Helena cried out, shaking her head in refusal.

"Always… always remember who you are… and… and don't judge people with the… guilt of their family. Sometimes… vengeance blinds loyalty but loyalty wins most times… " Athena kept talking to her daughter. She was slowly losing her life force.

" Mother, I don't understand what you mean…'' Helena said, confused at her mother's words.

" You will when the time comes"

At the end of the words, Helena watched as her mother slowly closed her eyes, welcoming the darkness that had long been threatening to envelop her. As her eyes slowly shut, the winds began blowing fiercely as the sun battled with the moon.

In the world of immortals, chaos was about to break out. The immortals were shaken in their abode as the orb breath out anger and murderous aura.

The orb was angry. It has lost its owner.

Helena's gaze was still fixed on her mother while Lord Kizia just stood there in transfix, his eyes solely on the woman lying on the ground whose life force was cut out.

Another set of light but anxious footsteps was heard. Helena tore her eyes away from her mother and saw a woman with a crown of the moon rushing in, tears flowing down her eyes. Her hair was gradually turning dark but there were ligaments of white at the tip.

"Athena…" The woman whispered softly, kneeling to take a closer look at her.

"Aunt Selena… mother… she…" Helena stuttered, her breath was heavy as she stared at her mother.

The woman that just rushed in was her mother's sister, Queen Selena. She is the moon goddess that the halflings are entrusted to by the Order of the Mystic gods.

As Helena wanted to say more, she caught sight of her aunt's hair. It was getting dark, the moon was losing its shine as a result of the orb. There was a sudden flash of light enough to tear a crack in the firmament of the immortal realm.

Helena had no time to think about anything else. Something worse was going to happen if she didn't take control over the orb. If the orb loses control with her father, the mortal world would be destroyed in no time.

Turning around in circles with her hands dancing in the air, just like her mother had been teaching her, she tried to connect with the orb. But after three failed attempts she was getting frustrated.

"Arrrrrrggg! Mother! You have to wake up! I can't do this alone!"

Just as she was lamenting, she began to hear a little rumbling of thunder. Oh no! Her father was losing his control and that was not good. She has to do something.

"Believe in yourself and the people you have to save. There might be someone special, not worth losing" her mother's words replayed in her head.

Closing her eyes to absorb the energy of the mortal and immortal circle, a view started playing in her eyes. Different energies from the mortals were displaying non-stop. Something kept drawing her force towards a little pack, somewhere in the mortal world.

Just like her mother, Helena caught a glimpse of a dying woman but she was under labor. Seeing the energy draining from her, Helena could tell that she was going to lose the child.

Unless she could summon the orb to save her.

"Save my son! Save him… Helena and I promise to…give him to you "

Helena was so surprised at the request of the woman that she didn't listen to the last words. This was a pack of halflings known as werewolves and their prayers were directed to her Aunt, Selena. Why was she calling on her instead?

"Aunt Selena, you have to attend to your children…" Helena said to her aunt, looking anxious.

" I can't… I can't… the orb is getting weaker… besides, she is calling on you" The moon goddess replied. Her powers were getting weak as the Orb was slowly losing its powers.

If it doesn't have a new owner soon, something bad would happen in the immortal realm.

" Me? It's a mistake…" Helena said, looking horrified.

Why would she do the work of the moon goddess? Clearly the woman made a mistake in calling her name.

She wasn't their goddess! She was just a princess!

" Helena… hurry! Your father is losing it!" The moon goddess urged, as she stared in fright at the anger of Lord Kizia.

The man's eyes brimmed with fire and lightning as his eyes were filled with tears at those who betrayed him. How could they team up with that despicable demon to overthrow him and kill his wife?

"I will destroy everyone!" He thundered as lightning struck.

Storms. Whirlwinds. Volcanic explosions. Floods all over the mortal world. They were running and dying. At this rate, there would be no mortal world which means the immortal can not survive for long too.

The energy from the mortals supplies the immortality needed by the people of the realm. If they cease to exist, it won't be long too before the world of immortals completely disappears.

That's what her mother told her. But her father didn't care.

Helena knew she had to do something before it became too late. Taking one last try, she wielded all that she had to save the mortal and immortal world.

As the world listened to her, she slumped to the ground as she clung to the shining object. Her eyes were opened but it was completely different.
