Chapter 6 - Looking For a Job

After walking for five minutes after seeing the sign, of which he couldn't read.

There was no walls or high fences that surrounded the town, only a gate that would serve as an entrance for those using the trails.

At the gate stood two guards, they had very little armor on their body the only protection they had was on their chest. From what Lux could see the equipment they had was of poor quality and wasn't taken care of. They stood lax and inattentive, their hands resting on the hilt of their sword on their hips. Seeing this a sense of panic course through Lux's being.

Did he need paperwork to enter the place? Did he need some form of ID? He put on an appearance of confidence, or the best a person could with blooded rags on his body.

"Excuse me sir," One of the guards said stepping in front of him, raising his hand to signal him to stop. He pulls out a piece of paper and a writing you tensile from his back pocket, "Please state your full name and the reason for entering the town of Feltree."

Lux let out a sigh of relief as two of his worries have been relieved. The first one being that he didn't need paperwork to enter the town. The second and most important was the language barrier, he thought that the people of this new world spoke a different language but thankfully he was able to understand what they were saying and knew how to speak it.

"My name is Lux," He said quickly and quietly, he didn't know if this world used last names. If they did would they find his weird and questionable?

The guard looked at the other guard, he rolled his eyes and signaled for him to enter the town.

"Just go in, I'll spell your name the best I can," He waved his hand, dismissing Lux, allowing him permission to enter the town. He turned to the other guard, "It's one of those new "hippy" names ain't, like Neaveh or something like that. Why can't parents name their kids something normal." The other guard laughs in response

"Well that was stupid," He said, almost scolding himself for panicking over such a small interaction.

"Thank god I can understand what they're saying," He mumbled to himself. However as that thought left his mind another one took its place.

'Should I change my name?' Lux thought to himself, he heard the guards remarks on his name and had gotten sensitive about his name. It wasn't that common of a name on earth either.

As he walked through the town all of the people were staring at him while they were doing their chores, activities, or jobs. They said nothing but their sight remained focus on him.

This action made sense to him. This is a fairly isolated place in the middle of a forest, it would be rare that they saw someone they didn't recognize. From what he's seen so far they're not a purposefully isolated place as he has made it this far without being attacked or stopped.

As he was walking through the town a group of kids chasing each other ran past him, all of the giggling and laughing there heads off. One of the kids grabbed his knee and yelled "I'm safe you can't touch me," Before running away again.

Dear god he hated kids. They are dumb, loud, and cost too much money. They can't do anything really until they learn how to walk. When they're first born all they do is cry, eat, and shit themselves constantly. And yet, his parents always the same question "When are you going to have kids?" or "Your brother has kids why don't you?" The idea of having kids of his own made him full of rage.

However it is often said that it is usually the people that don't want kids end up to be some of the best parents.

Soon one of the kids feel on the the floor. He laid there for a moment in total silence as the other kids that he was playing with gathered around him. He flipped over his knees and elbows were covered in scrapes. His faced morphed into a painful expression and started loudly bawling in tears.

Lux tried his best to stifle the laughter that was raging in his body.

For some reason whenever a kids starts crying or screaming, Lux starts laughing. Not that the idea of a kids in pain is enjoyable to him, he just finds everything else about it hilarious.

After walking around the area he found a guard that seemed to be on duty but was daydreaming, or at least didn't have a present mental state.

"Excuse me sir," Lux said in the most polite tone that he could muster, "Do you know where I can find a job around here?"

The city guard looked at him with disgust, mumbling something incoherent. The guard turned his back and started to walk.

When Lux heard this he let out a sigh. His hopes of this towing be friendly towards a stranger like him was dashed. There wasn't much hope in him to begin with but it was still there.

After a few paces the guard turned his head around. He let out a groan, loud enough for everyone to hear and signaled Lux to follow him, "Follow me, I know a place that needs someone to clean their stuff out every damn day," He somewhat shouted.

Lux was filled with a small shot of energy and listened to the guard and followed him.

The town was not that big, it took ten minutes of walking to cross the entire town. He guess that the town was divided neatly into districts. From where he entered that would be the residence district, where everyone whole lives in the village resides. In a short moment of walking he could guess he is now in what could be considered the "Business district" of the town was.

Most of the buildings were small, had two windows on the front entrance and sign that mentioned what they did. Eventually they stopped at a building that was significantly different than the others.

The building had no name or sign that would suggest that this is a place of business. The first floor (Ground floor for British English) didn't have any windows, not even did the door have a glass panel. It had 4 floors in total, the second floor and up had windows but they were tinted and couldn't see clearly through them.

The guard walked up to the door and knocked on the door three times. He let out a small chuckle while he did this.

"We don't have money and this ain't a damn hotel." Said a deep guttural voice behind the door. The voice sounded like it belong to a woman who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day but will still somehow live to be 100.

"He ain't here for that," The town guard said, suddenly smiling hearing the sound of the voice behind the door, "He's hear for that cleaning job everyone wants."

Upon hearing what the town guard has said the door swung open and with it the smell of food. Lux's stomach growled when he smelled the air. He was too concerned and swept up in his discovery of living a new life that he had forgotten that he hadn't have anything to eat all day.

The person who opened the door was a short, broad woman. Her hair was tied up into a bun but wasn't done nicely as there was many stray hairs along with some strands that wasn't even tied to the bun. "What you standing there for? Get inside." She barked. She then backed away from the door and went back to what she was doing without checking if Lux complied, which he did.

Inside he could see rows of tables with dirty dishes stacked on top of each other. The floor was littered with bits of food and puddles of fluid, from where he doesn't want to know. There was also a bar that had empty drinkware, all in different shapes. It was obvious that this was a restaurant.

"Miss what cleaning do you need? I can scrub the floor, wash the dishes, and clean the tables," Lux said as respectfully as he could, he needed the job and he needed money in . If he got rejected from this job for being even the smallest be mean or disrespectful then he would have to consider working the corner to make money.

The matron let out a smile, revealing some yellowed teeth but hey there were all still there, and a small chuckle. "Now don't you get yourself all worried up over stuff like that, I got that covered," the matron said.

Confusion set over Lux, "If you don't need me to clean that, then what do you cleaning job to you have for me?" He asks the matron.

"Well there's one job that you can do," the matron of the bar said, placing her hands behind her back, "You can clean the latrine out back."
