*[]⇇ "Nubian Pyramids, Meroe - Sudan.."* They may be smaller than their northern cousins at Giza, but the Meroe pyramids in northern Sudan are still an impressive sight. For one thing, there are more of them - over 200 in total - and their steeper sides are pretty amazing. Most importantly, you will find them almost deserted. Meroe was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush, which was ruled by the ancient Nubian kings and queens from about 300 BC to beyond 300 AD. Like Egypt, the pyramids were the tombs of the Kingdom of Kush. If you are wondering why the tops of most of these pyramids were taken off, that was the work of the Italian explorer Giuseppe Ferlini, who spent much of his life in the eighties of the nineteenth century searching for treasures in those places.
