Chapter 12 - Chapter Eight

Mrs. Baker has always been so supportive of Jacob and I. I couldn't have asked for a better tutor. Jacob loves Mrs. Baker. Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Heather Baker was like a second mother to Jake. It always puts a smile on my face to see Jacob having the best time with Mrs. Baker. As Jacob and I were waiting for the trial to be held in January, I had no other choice but to let Jacob stay overnight in jail.

It wasn't up to me, it was up to the court. I felt like I had abandoned Jacob as my own brother, and I wouldn't have been so sure what would happen if Jacob had not been released on bail. So I wanted to make Jacob feel special today.

Since Jacob's birthday had passed, and a late birthday party was coming up in a couple of days. I wanted to surprise him with something. Before, I couldn't have a party for Jacob, because I was so busy with work.

Even on weekends, when I was not working at my office, I had cases to deal with and I was not able to spend time with my little brother. But then, I was able to plan a late birthday party for Jacob. I had no cases to work on, and I called Jacob from downstairs in the living room, and Jacob came downstairs eventually. Jacob saw me holding a present for him, and I handed the gift to Jacob.

"Oh, I love surprises," Jacob said, excitedly grinning.

I shrugged, "Oh, you'll like this gift, trust me," I answered back. Jacob smiled, before opening the gift. I crossed my arms and watched Jacob open his gift.

"I hope you like it," I said, with a smile.

Jacob gasped, and the gift was a watch. The exact watch our father used to wear before he died.

"Thank you, Ryan!" Jacob said, excitedly and hugged me.

"No problem, buddy," I said, and rubbed my brother's cheek.

Jacob stepped back a little bit and I told Jacob to try on his watch to see if it fits. Jacob was happy, and thrilled. I smiled, just realizing my brother deserves the best of everything.

"It fits," Jacob said.

"Yeah?" I asked. "You didn't have to do that," Jacob said.

I chuckled, "Are you kidding? You deserve it. I love you, and you're a great brother, you really are."

Jacob sighed, and looked at the watch once again, "It's exactly like the one dad had," Jacob said.

"And it is yours forever to keep," I said, smiling at Jacob.

Jacob has been missing my parents a lot lately. Ever since they died, it left a big hole in Jacob's heart. It left me a big hole in my heart, too.

I didn't want Jacob to feel like my parents were gone forever. I wanted Jacob to understand that no matter what happened to our parents, even when they passed, our parents are forever in our hearts, including Jacob's.

I am the legal guardian to Jacob. My job is to love Jacob, protect him, and make sure he's happy. Jacob is managing his autism issues pretty well. I take Jacob to therapy. It is because Jacob has trouble with his speech sometimes.

But Jacob has been improving a lot. Jacob still has trouble with some other things, but I know he'll get through them as well.

However, the next morning, I went for a run. I ran into town, and it was still getting hot outside, but not too hot. It may be September, but I can manage through the heat. It will eventually cool down as the night goes by.

Until I came across this bench just two blocks away from the restaurant I would take Jacob to sometimes. It was called Chili's Grill and Bar, a little Mexican restaurant located in West Fargo.

I sighed, stretching my head and legs. I saw Caleb coming out of this bakery. Caleb was with this girl, I am thinking it was his girlfriend Taylor, who Caleb never showed me what she looked like. Taylor had long blonde hair, possibly weighing around 120 pounds.

Taylor Bones, was her name. Caleb did tell me something about marrying Emma one day.

Caleb saw me across the street and I continued sitting on the bench, watching Caleb ignore me and Caleb and Taylor both marched away from the bakery and went to the parking lot.

As I watched Caleb walk down towards the car, him and Taylor sat inside the car. I cleared my throat, and people were looking at me as they were marching by me.

I was still being treated like a prisoner. I stood up from the bench, and continued my run.

I sighed, walking into my house.

Jacob and Mrs. Baker saw me come inside, and they were both watching a movie together.

"Oh, hey, you're back," Mrs. Baker said, turning herself from the couch after standing up.

"Yeah," I was trying to catch my breath, "It was a long run, so I stopped into town and got us some food," I said.

"Oh, Mexican," Jacob said, excitedly. Jacob grabbed the containers inside the bag. Jacob went into the kitchen and started preparing for our lunch.

"Oh, that's so sweet, you didn't have to get me anything," Mrs. Baker said.

"Come on, Mrs. Baker, I hardly do anything for you, you do a lot for me," I explained.

Mrs. Baker sighed, "I will go help Jacob," Mrs. Baker said, before she found her way to the kitchen.

I chuckled, and I understood. Jacob had forgotten to turn off the television, and as I grabbed the remote from the coffee table, I saw Mr. and Mrs. Miller on the news. They were wanting justice for whoever killed Izza.

Mrs. Baker, Jacob and I, all three of us were playing a game. Jacob's favorite was Monopoly. We were all laughing, and having a good time.

"I win, again!" Jacob said.

I sighed, "How do you like winning every time? You're not cheating, are you?" I said.

"No, Ryan, I am not cheating," Jacob said, softly laughing. Mrs. Baker explained to me about how Jacob is becoming smarter than the both of us.

"You better watch out, I can beat the both of you," Jacob said. I chuckled, before taking a sip of my drink of wine. I asked Mrs. Baker if she wanted more wine?

Mrs. Baker told me she didn't; and I stood up from the chair and left the dining room.
