Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: The Fall Exam

The school year was as sweet as a dream and could be as long as a lucid one could. Eighth grade was one Ethan would like to record in his personal journal that he almost never wrote in. Maybe it went so fast because of how focused he was in his studies? His father had brought him up to be a studies boy.

As fast as it came, the fall break was too close. Ethan yet, had pulled an all-nighter to study for his test. The sun rays illuminated his bedroom from his window that was implanted just above his wooden desk.

Once he heard the birds singing silly tunes, he sat down his pen and cracked his knuckles with a loud relieved sigh. He looked down at his work which consisted of linear equations that he had become aquant and familiar with before his green eyes gazed at his right wrist.

Had he still not found his bracelet that was very dear to him.

"Ethan, time to get up!" He heard his mother shout through the door. He looked up at his picture of Harvard University that hung beside his window with three nails, showing the entrance. Who really knew where the fourth nail that held the top rightside was.

he ruffled his curls and got up to get ready for the last day of school before the pending fall break.

The fog had rested against the dewy grass and the air was rather cold, but more or less was expected.

"Brr…" Marriane shivered and wrapped her arms against her own little body, clutching the sides of her dainty pink sweater. "Daddy, it's so cold!" She whines, reaching out her hands gripping onto her father's vest and nuzzling further into his side as they sat on the burgandy couch.

"Do not fuss, Marriane. The days are cold but let your heart be warm." Her father spoke softly, petting her hair as he read a book titled, "Romeo And Juliet'." Marriane inflated her delicate cheeks and pulled on his vest vehemently.

"Oh, daddy! Again with your sappy stuff." She huffs, rolling against the couch cushions. Ethan had arrived down the creaking stairs and sat down at the table, but his mother was not found preparing breakfast this early morning.

"Where's mother?" He asked his father, who looked up from his book at the assumed mention. "Your mother's out currently talking to Ol' Man Ranker. Said he could fix the tap."

Ethan sighs and nods, seems like no breakfast this morning. To fuel the boy, he entered the pantry to grab a snack so he could at least make it through this last day. With his third cracker, he went to the front door and grabbed his coat that hung right next to his father's.

The walk to school was rather lonely and the fog made it feel more gloomy than Ethan had felt it had to be. The glistening pond past the oak gave him a sense of relief, one which he cherished.

The school gates were ever close and he had prepared for this test. He would be disappointed if he did less than the high expectations he set for himself as the fall test would determine his place in the overall school. The boy did not like to disappoint, not even a bit.

"Ethan, hey!" Jack slings his arm around the boys shoulder as he enters the building. Ethan nods and waves. "Hey, Jack." He says monotonously.

Jack raises a jet black colored eyebrow. "Hey? Why so gloomy?" Asked the boy who was greeting twelve people at the same time while he spoke to Ethan.

Ethan fouldn't help but act lack luster in his performance of socializing, he stayed up all night to study. "Just a bit tired, that's all…" He mutters, trailing off as he yawns.

Jack grins and ruffles Ethan's curls. "Oh, I know you're going to ace that test man. Once you get home, get some sleep will ya'?" Jack says as he gets distracted talking to someone who appeared to play soccer, it was so like him if Ethan had a say.

Ethan shakes his head fondly before heading to class shortly after getting his books from his locker.

"Alright class. Liam is going to hand out these papers and put your name on them then you shall begin." Mrs. Arvin said simply as she sat at her desk, not very observant to the room around her.

Ethan got his paper and readied his pencil before starting the fall exam. His mind was racing as he easily did math problems but alas would the boy's sleepiness catch up to him.

His eyes flutter open and closed as he tried to focus on his mat before they inevitably fluttered closed.

"Ethan!" His head snaps up and he looks up utterly confused until his green drowsy eyes land on an angry Ms. Arvin.

"You were sleeping the whole day! We did math, reading and social studies today. I'm going to have to ask you to stay behind so you can finish your test." She said, folding her arms and angrily tapping her finger against his desk.

He looked around, slowly realizing it was after school and nobody was here anymore. His face dropped into despair and he hid his face in his hands. He just couldn't believe he fell asleep in the middle of the fall exam!

"Ethan, start. The sooner you finish the math, reading, and social studies test you can leave." Ms. Arvin said, not in the warmest tone ever as she sat down at her desk and clasped her hands.

Ethan drew a long sigh before racking his brain to finish his math test.

Time flew and before he knew it, it was about six in the evening. Finally finished his tests, he yawned and turned in his paper to a half-asleep Ms. Arvin.

"Good, good. I will stay back a bit to organize my classroom and grade, I suppose. You're free to leave." Ms. Arvin sighs and stretches her long arms. Ethan nods, his green eyes staring out at the window.

The sun was setting and he'd better hurry home. He exits the classroom quietly, closing the door behind him.

His eyes were drawn to a light being on in a classroom. But, it was on the abandoned east wing. He raises an eyebrow and looks back between the east wing hall and the hall to his locker. He was strangely conflicted if he should hurry and return home or let his curiousity take ahold of him.

Oh, but he was always a curious boy, sticking his head where it never belonged in the first place. "Curiosity killed the cat…" He trailed off as a whisper and he walked silently down the dark hallway and towards the lit up classroom.
