In the old wooden house, there is a boys brawl with each other in the middle of the students. All wear the same outfit–a black uniform–with the silver bird mold on the back. It was the emblem of Cenderawasih School. The one who is in a defensive stance is Suluh, and the other who delivers a sidekick is Satia.
Suluh did not respond to it fast as he cannot evade it. He takes the damage with his elbow and the force makes him bounce a little bit. But it is not over, Suluh still focuses on what his foe does next, his stamina almost dried, and tries to catch his breath. He did not want to lose, he had to finish the task.
First, he must defend against all the attacks until the time is done. Meanwhile, Satia is a talented student and also Suluh's closest friend. When Satia does assault with his fist, Suluh can read his flows and block them with his hand. What he did not know about is the kick, tackled Suluh a second later and made him fall on the floor. He whined and was about to rise but Satia's clenched hand was in front of his face.
"Again!" A croaked sound roared from the old man. His white beard thrives tall to his chest, bald but still has hair around the corner. He is Madiarta, the mentor.
Satia lends a hand to Suluh and smiles, "Tired?"
"Not even a bit," Suluh said with the assistance of Satia he arose.
"Remember, focus on all threats," Madiarta's voice resonated around the room. "It could not be in front but surround."
Do not be tricked, the hit can be from Satia's foot, hands, or both. He is strong in his stance as Satia walks closer to him. When Satia tries to hit him, Suluh obstructs it and steps back. A kick was launched but Suluh fenced it with his knee, which also made Satia surprised because it was the first time Suluh had done that.
When Satia sees that the middle front of Suluh is unprotected, fast as feasible he delivers a kick to his stomach. He is so sure Suluh won't be able to avoid it this time, but Suluh's hand catches his foot and locked him. This is a massive weakness to Satia, he had no total balance when Suluh knock down his leg and this time, Satia fell to the ground.
"How was it?" Suluh felt self-confident.
"Not too bad," Satia admitted. "That is a brand new move to me."
"Enough!" The Madiarta's voice can be heard clearly despite the distance. "You two, come closer."
Satia awake from his tumble look so confused like what Suluh felt on his face. Slow walks clouded their minds, restless, shortened the distance between the teacher. The two of them lined and bowed down, as Madiarta's hands reach their shoulders with satisfaction.
"Good work," the old man said with an excited tone. "But knowledge is infinite, and wisdom is eternal. Time to break."
Suluh and Satia were shocked, a blissful smile came from them. This is no doubt a wonderful time ever since in their life, not so often students could have a commendation from Madiarta. For Suluh himself, it is indeed an achievement that could fascinate his father, Chief Bara.
The reason Suluh is here is that the chief wanted him to learn martial arts to become skillful; as the leader must know how to stand alone. But brute force is another element to steer Baturia town, there is much more to it such as communication with the residents. Suluh on the other hand is not the kind of man who can talk a lot to assure.
Madiarta leaves them and the other students come closer. The blonde hair runs fast and then sets his arm around Suluh's shoulder, his name is Safih and his vibe is full of enthusiasm; overreaction. Differ from the lad beside Satia with his cold mimics. He is Samudera, a handsome lad but a tremendous caustic one.Â
"Can you believe it?" Safih cheered, still questioning what their teacher said. "A rare compliment from the old man!"
"Yeah, it must be your lucky day," Samudera claimed enviously. "Rather than Satia, I could do better."
"Are you challenging me?" Satia teased with a small grin. "But you are the one who is afraid."
"What did you say?" Samudera was ready to give his friend a lesson.Â
"Bring it on then!" Satia even made a fool expression to taunt Samudera.
"Alright, cut it off you two!" Safih has always been their middleman.Â
"Now, now, we have time to train ourselves," Suluh started to wear his sandals. "It's better than to show who is the best."
"Here we go again, talking like a chief," Samudera said sarcastically. "We should listen to him."
They laughed together and strode into a vast field where other students were assembled. After that, noon comes and it's time to home for all the students. The Cenderawasih School is located in the middle of the forest, had to walk in an awful direction. It is said, it also was a test to be able to reach the school, whoever fail did not deserve to be there.
Meanwhile, Baturia Town is not like the other town in Bentala. This town is kinda advanced with steam as their main source. Even at the hill, Suluh can see the Zeppelin above the houses. Humans also created a vehicle made from a combustion engine, with no need for a horse to do the work. All the architecture is also different, it becomes taller even though it is still built from wood and brick with extra iron.
It looked so beautiful, the sensation, and the environment. As Suluh walked, he saw various things on the road. A three-wheel automobile that carried passengers, a bench filled with people talking to each other, the sound of the blacksmith forging the swords, and the merchant who screams to attract customers. All that happened one at a time, making it so crowded.
"Good afternoon, Young Master," the man full of silver armor greeted him, his face not visible due to his barrel helmet. He was one of the wiras. They are a guard to the townspeople, every town has its own. "May I accompany you to the castle, Sir?"Â
Suluh realized that the man was making an honorable stance, he then nodded and answered, "Nah, it's fine, officer. You should continue your task."
"As you wish, Young Master," he moves past Suluh after bowing down, saluting.Â
Those who know Suluh welcomed him with elation. The lad answers it with a smile, and a joyful face to make the others feel comfortable. But the reason he stops is when the old fat man called him, that distinctive mustache is well known to Suluh. He wore a white apron, cleaned his hands that were full of flour, and then extended his arm wide open.
"Come here, kid!" His name is Asban, and Suluh did not hesitate to embrace him. "How's your meditation, eh?"Â
Suluh chuckles as he found it humorous, "A bit better, I think."
"That's the spirit!" He taps Suluh's shoulder as he wanted him to come inside. "Let's eat some meal."
"Thanks," Suluh said disinclined. "But I should be back now."
"So soon?" Asban asked to make sure. When Suluh nodded, that man must understand what the kid might have needed to do. "If that's the case, wait a moment."
The bald man runs inside his house with haste. Suluh still did not know what he is on about. But as he look at the street, he witnessed a lad who has been hauled to the narrow alley. No one seemed to pay attention and that made Suluh without a doubt, move toward them. The crowd deterred Suluh from going into the violent act, but he went on pushing his way through the exhibition.Â
The vehicle's show is so loud that the shout of the young man cannot be heard. Dressed in expensive clothing and exuding an air of wealth, he is thrown into a desperate battle for his belongings. Suddenly, a punch lands in his stomach, sending him to his knees in agony. But the thief isn't done yet, delivering a brutal blow to the man's face, and that causes him to lie on the floor.
But when he saw the entrance, a guy was standing there in silhouette. The lad moaned, "Please, help me!"Â
"Who the hell are you?" Said the thief who wears a worn vest.
Suluh strides forward, his face determined as he emerges from the shadows. Those three thieves look at each other, and one of them smirks after realizing the son of the chief's face. Suluh at that moment makes a stance the same as he was in the Cenderawasih School. He is a trained student and this is the first time he executed it in a real battle. He has to focus and concentrate on all threats as the Madiarta teacher said.Â
Save those who need it.
