Chereads / Return of the Failed Hero / Chapter 20 - Injured Foe

Chapter 20 - Injured Foe

Ray landed on the back of the Dragontooth Lion with a loud noise, and his flaming hand pierced into the flesh of the creature, making it run wild, whipping its body right and left as it tried to flip over whatever was on its back and hurting it, but Ray grabbed onto the fur on its back and continued stabbing its flesh with his flaming hands.

Woosh!

The Dragontooth Lion swung its tail at its back, and Ray, who saw the spike-covered tail that was fast approaching him, immediately jumped off from the back of the creature before it hit him, landing on the ground without any injuries as the spiked tail stopped right before it could injure its own back.

"I was so close…" Ray couldn't help but be disappointed, and the Dragontooth Lion turned its head to look at him, its eyes red with rage. "Well, fuck.." Ray let out a bitter chuckle as he clutched on the laser pistol tightly. "I guess I made him angry."

GRRRRRRAAAAAR!

The Dragontooth Lion roared loudly, its saliva splashing everywhere, and Ray took a step back in order to avoid getting wet.

GRRRRRRAAAAAR!

The Dragontooth Lion roared once again before it charged forward, rushing in Ray's direction.

Ray instantly turned around and ran, and the monster followed him close behind.

Whoosh!

Ray ran in the direction of one of the large trees in the area, and as soon as he reached near one of them, he leapt into the air and kicked his foot onto the tree trunk before doing a backflip, making a bit of a distance from him and the tree. The Dragontooth Lion on the other hand, missed its target by a hair's breadth and crashed its head against the tree trunk.

BOOM!

The razor sharp teeth of the Dragontooth Lion pierced into the tree trunk with a loud bang, causing the wood to burst into pieces within seconds. And the large tree that seemed impossible to cut down due to its sheer size wobbled back and forth.

Luckily, it wasn't enough for the tree trunk to break completely, but it was still surprising how sharp and strong the Dragontooth Lion was.

"I can't believe it's capable of making such terrifying attacks even when it's injured and weak…" Ray couldn't help but be impressed by the display of strength shown by the Dragontooth Lion. He definitely had to be careful not to get destroyed by those sharp teeth.

GRRRRRR!

The monster roared loudly as it tried to free its sharp teeth from the tree trunk, which had pierced deep into the wood and had gotten stuck in it. Blood began to drop down from its mouth and its back as it moved.

Ray stared at the monster that was now stuck to the tree trunk with raised eyebrows. He contemplated on what to do for a fraction of a second before leaping into the air and landing right on top of the monster for a second time.

BAM!

Ray raised his arm into the air, which was instantly enveloped in flames once again, and stabbed his hands into the monster's wound, causing it to scream and roar loudly in pain.

GRRRRRRAR!

The monster roared loudly in desperation as it attempted to whip its body left and right, but it wasn't able to move properly due to its teeth having gotten stuck on the wood.

"Come on… come on!" Ray gritted his teeth and continued stabbing his hands into the flesh wound of the monster, clenching his other hand tightly onto the fur of the creature as it attempted to shake him off.

Splat! Splat! Splat!

Large amounts of blood began to spill out from the back of the Dragontooth Lion as Ray continued stabbing his hands into the creature's flesh, and after a few seconds, he could see a white layering within the wound, and his eyes widened.

Whoosh!

Just as he was about to continue stabbing, the spiked tail of the creature swung at him from the side, and Ray gritted his teeth in frustration and instantly leapt off from the creature's back.

BAM!

Right before he could completely evade the attack, the spiked tail collided against his feet, and Ray gasped as he was flung to the side.

"Geh…" Recognising that crashing down onto the ground might make him a better target for the monster, Ray instantly used his burning hand to shoot out flames and attempted to maneuver his descent, somehow making a safe landing on the ground.

"Fucking hell…" Ray glanced at his left leg for a brief second and realised that it was bleeding profusely, but he had no time to tend to his injuries as the Dragontooth Lion charged towards him without giving him even a second of relief.

GRRRRRRAR!

The monster roared as it rushed in his direction, and Ray bit his lips and decided to charge towards the creature as well.

Swoosh!

Ray slid down just before he collided head-on with the monster, missing the Dragontooth Lion's sharp teeth by a hair's breadth. He slid underneath its legs and appeared on the other side, unscathed, while the creature took a bit longer to stop in its tracks due to its large mass.

Swoosh!

Ray took advantage of this chance and instantly leapt up into the air, landing right on top of the creature once again, for a third time.

Ray raised his arm into the air and it burst into flames once again. He then stabbed his hands into the white layer within the wound, and the collision resulted in a loud noise that echoed throughout the forest.

BOOM!

"GRRRRRRAR!" The monster roared in pain as it desperately tried to shake Ray off its back, but Ray held on tightly on its fur, refusing to be pushed off.

Click!

Ray then took out his specialized grenade and turned it on before placing it inside the giant wound, and immediately jumped off from the monster's back.

GRRRRRRAR!

The creature roared in relief as it realised that the nuisance that was injuring it had finally gone away, but right before it could take revenge on Ray, the grenade attached to its back exploded, and the Dragontooth Lion erupted into flames.

BOOOM!

"GRRRRRRAR!" Ray watched as the flames enveloped the creature from the inside, burning it alive as it roared and moved violently with no sense of direction. But after a few futile attempts at extinguishing the flames, its motion gradually started to weaken, and it crashed down onto the ground.

THUD!

Ray stared at the burning dead body of the monster with a curious expression on his face. He was only able to defeat this creature because of its injuries. Had the Dragontooth Lion been at its full strength and health, it most likely would've taken him a lot more time, and he would've had a lot more injuries.

The fact that it was able to move so quickly even when it was injured was impressive, to say the least. But what made Ray even more curious was what injured the Dragontooth Lion to this extent.

Ray kneeled down and scanned the burnt corpse of the monster before shifting his gaze onto the small dirt road which the Dragontooth Lion had took to get here.

Ray was sure that whatever hurt the Dragontooth Lion could be found if he followed the route that the now dead monster took.

But the question was; should he?

Ray took out an energy bar from his backpack and ate it, which restored his energy. He then took out the medical kit and opened it. Ray grabbed a bottle of spray from the kit, pointed it at his injured foot and sprayed all over the wound.

After placing the bottle of spray back in the medical kit, Ray glanced at his wound which was now healing even faster than before.

"Now, should I really be investigating this?" Ray sat down next to the burnt corpse and thought to himt. He was definitely intrigued by the situation, but he also didn't know what was waiting for him if he did choose to trace the route of the Dragontooth Lion back to where it came from.

And it's not like he has done this before. If he wasn't careful, he could really end up losing his life.

"Well, it's not like there's any monsters for me to hunt here, anyway…" In the end, Ray simply shrugged as he decided to head in the direction where the Dragontooth Lion came from. He had a feeling that whatever hurt the Dragontooth Lion was somehow also connected to the disappearance of monsters within the dungeon. And since he had came here to hunt the monsters, not investigating this weird phenomenon meant that he'd have no monsters to hunt.

"But before that…." Ray's attention shifted back to the burnt corpse and he walked over to it.

Stab!

With a quick stab using his arm, Ray pierced his hand into the body of the dead creature, and after a few seconds of searching, pulled out a yellow coloured rock from inside of it.

"Yellow Lazbazite mineral. Enough to upgrade sublevel to 50." An automated voice echoed in his ears, and a bright smile appeared on his face as he spoke with a soft chuckle .

"Hahaha… I guess today might really be my lucky day!"
