Chapter 1 - PROLOGUE

We walk quietly, hand-in-hand, barely breathing, barely living, but moving nonetheless. The bridge isn't a busy one, just like he promised.

Except for the occasional car that passes by every few minutes, we are the only ones on the bridge. Yet, we choose to use the walkway. I guess getting run over by one of the occasional cars isn't thrilling enough. The thought makes me chuckle.

"What?" he asks, turning his attention away from our interlocked hands and looking up at me. I quickly shake my head and look away. Thankfully, he doesn't press me. He turns away and now stares down at the waters beneath us.

He might be calculating how far the fall from here would be. How many seconds it would take. Would the water splash? Would I scream? Would it work?

His grip on my hand tightens and I immediately relax. I look up at him and find that he's already staring at me; a small smile playing on his lips. I return the smile and look down at my feet. He squeezes my hand in reassurance yet again.

I am suddenly so grateful that he chose to do this with me. Without his presence and support, I would have never been able to see it through. I stare at the sun setting far off. It's beautiful. It looks like a yolk. The sky has streaks of orange and purple running through it. I want to touch it.

"We're here." His voice pulls me out of my thoughts. We are at the centre of the bridge. I let go of his hand and walked over to the edge. I hold on to the railing and look below. It's a far fall.

I turn around and grin, "It would be bad to fall from here. It could kill you." He keeps staring at me, studying me. I don't think he finds my joke funny.

I begin to climb the railing, holding my breath until I find a balance on top.

Breathe.

Inhale. Exhale.

The wind rushes through my hair and slaps my face. A quick reminder that mother-nature is against what I'm doing. I ignore her. A few seconds later, he's standing beside me on the railing and holding my hand.

I watch as the wind tussles his hair. It's pretty; I like it. He reaches over to tuck my hair behind my ears but even after he keeps his hand on my face.

"I love you." His voice is barely above a whisper. I'm too overwhelmed to respond. I had told him how much I loved him a thousand times before this and hopefully that suffices for this moment.

He nods in understanding and returns his hand to his side. His eyes don't leave mine. I smile. He smiles. We jump.
