Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 - A change in mentality

A few years have passed since that incident.

Like most he didn't remember much of his life when he was an infant. The only thing he did remember was being in a white padded room with a number of other children.

He turned five years old a few days ago and he was moved to another section of the complex along with the other kids his age. That was also when he got his name, Havok. Until now the kids in his group were just referred to as numbers by the staff and his number was 25.

As soon as he arrived in the new area, he was constantly bullied by the other kids because of the way he looked. It was also just something fun to do for them, so they figured why not? Havok was the average height of a five-year-old, but he had olive colored skin and short black hair, which stood out from the other kids in his age group. The other kids had fair colored skin. Their eyes varied in color from brown, blue and green. Havok on the other hand had heterochromia, eyes meaning that they were different colors, one of his eyes was black while the other was blue. A couple of weeks have passed since Havok was brought to the new area.

By now Havok had become numb to their comments. He ignored whatever they said as long as they didn't put their hands on him. He treated what they were saying as noise. Seeing that he was no longer reacting to their hate filled comments they quickly lost interest. After all there were several kids here that would take the bait there's no need to waste so much energy on Havok. In general, Havok was rather docile especially when compared to the other kids.

The orphanage complex was massive, it had to house several dozens of kids, there was a medical area, library and a recreational area that included an outdoor basketball court. The kids were made to manage the upkeep of all the facilities they had access to. The staff couldn't be bothered to do any more work than they currently did, which was barely any. Of course, cleaning isn't something kids like to do, so the facilities degraded over time. The kids still enjoyed the recreational area the most even with the raggedy equipment, but every game they played usually ended in a fight.

As kids raised with no parental guidance, they were quick to fight over any and every disagreement they had as if that were a natural response. The lack of guidance led to the kids feeling no remorse for any action they made and a twisted sense of right and wrong. That is to say that they really had no sense of what was wrong. The only things they learned were the bad habits of the staff which contributed greatly to their twisted personalities. Why even try to talk things out when you can just fight about it to decide who was right? Was the general attitude of the kids here.

Havok saw the other kids fight frequently, but he liked to be alone, so it never occurred to him that they would target him. Havok had been with this new group of kids for a few weeks, and he kept a low profile just sitting away from everyone, just quietly observing their interactions. One day he was sitting on the bleachers while the other kids were playing around. He was slowly falling asleep, which was his favorite thing to do at this age. Just as he was dozing off, he heard footsteps getting closer to him and right when opened his eyes to see who it was, a first flying at his face. Having never been in a fight he clumsily tried to get out of the way, but he failed.

Bang!

The fist landed on the right side of his face, right on the jawbone and a loud popping sound was made.

Krck!

Havok got knocked over and yelled in agony holding his jaw "Ahh! What did you do that for!?" He mumbled as he could no longer speak properly.

There were 5 kids around him laughing like a joke was told.

"Hahaha! What kind of stupid question is that? We were bored and needed something to do and then we saw you. As you can feel, we decided to kick your ass." Said the leader of the group.

Havok, realizing he needed to get away from them, got up and tried to run while holding his jaw, but didn't get far as he was tripped by one of the kids and fell down.

"Where do you think you are going, you little shit!" Said the kid who tripped him with a grin on his face.

Then he proceeded to get stomped unconscious by the kids while trying to shield his body. He felt something that he had never felt before and that was rage. His typical character was someone that was lazy and unnoticeable. Rage, hatred and fury were the only thoughts he had before he lost consciousness.

"Haha! This was awesome. I think we found something to do when we're bored from now on." Said the leader of the kids as they walked away.

The medics came in a few minutes after he was knocked out and took him away. Havok awoke in the medical center with his jaw wired shut. When he was getting stomped out, he was able to catch glimpses of the staff in-between the punches and kicks steadily bombarding him to see if they were coming to break it up. He quickly realized they saw what happened, but they had no intention to break up the fights. He saw the staff cheering, laughing and placing bets as money changed hands.

He now realized that no one here would ever help him, so he decided he would fight back. Which of course doesn't do much when you are fighting several people, but it was better than just accepting a beating.

No one here knew, not even Havok, that this moment changed the mindset of a once laid-back, standoffish kid, to what his future enemies would call a devil. Now he wouldn't just be dismissive of the fights he saw; he would study the fights and learn the ways they fought and ready himself for the next time they showed up.

What he observed of the fights was, where to hit someone to cause damage and how much damage the blows did. Going for the balls was an extremely effective move, even if you didn't land the attack a mere gesture of an attack to the balls would affect the opponent. If it did land the reaction was predictable, an instant reaction would happen. The opponent would halt their movement, grab their stomach and double over. Leaving an outstanding chance for a knockout. This was Havok's' favorite place to attack because of the opportunity to do as much damage as you can while the opponent is stunned.

A blow on the lower right side in the area between the stomach and the back. He didn't know what that area was called, but he knew that getting hit their causes a tremendous amount of damage. He learned this from the rare chance he got to watch the older kids fight. While he was heading back to his room from the medical bay the staff member that was escorting him back to his room wanted to place some bets on the current fight, so went to watch the fight until it came to an end.

The fight was being held in the empty pool that was outside.

There Havok saw a small scrawny kid land a hit on a tall kid who had excellent power and was dominating the fight. The tall kid, regardless of being dominant during the fight, was on the ground gasping for air when the scrawny kid hit him. One solid hit in the area on his lower right abdomen, just before it got to his back. It disrupts whatever action the opponent is taking and knocks the wind out of them. This momentary lapse in focus is a deadly flaw and Havok aimed to finish every fight as soon as he could, so he was excited to try that move out the next time he got into a fight. Seeing someone like himself who didn't have the build or experience fighting defeating a stronger opponent was inspiring.

After that attack from the first group of kids that broke his jaw, the other kids smelled blood in the water, much like sharks or any other predator that sees weak prey in front of them. More kids decided to join in on the fun. Several times a day, by all different groups of kids Havok would get attacked. Havok would try to connect on any of his blows, but with his lack of experience he rarely connected.

Two weeks went by like that until Havok was able to consistently land some of his attacks.

While he was still and getting his ass kicked, Havok was constantly improving his fighting ability. Other than fighting to survive or fighting to escape from this hellhole. Havok had a dream for his future. Havoks dream was freedom. Not just free from the orphanage, but free from anyone else's restrictions and the ability to do what you want when you want.

For that dream Havok made up his mind to do whatever it took to make it happen even if that meant he had to make the whole world his enemy. He made a vow to himself that anyone that stood in his way would be obliterated in the most brutal way possible.
