Kaito Kanzaki
The main character of the story, Kaito was a child born with a debilitating condition that negatively affected muscular growth in his body, resulting in a frail and weak constitution. Unsurprisingly, this negatively affected his daily and social life. The inability to do simple chores that involved moderate physical labor or socialize with the village children who ostracized him not only for his condition but because of the feminine features he shared with his mother despite being a boy.
As a result, Kaito refused to go outside and locked himself away where he found his affinity for books and was discovered to have incredible intelligence, his parents often finding it difficult to keep up with his desire for more literature.
Because of this ability to absorb information at incredible rates, he was capable of educating himself on a variety of topics. These bouts of reading were often interrupted by visits of various doctors who Kaito detested due to their proclivity to take advantage of his parent's goodwill.
Kaito is often plagued by the thought of being a burden and disappointment to his parents due to his condition.
It is only when a certain group of "doctors" come to visit him that he discovers there might be a reason behind his ailment.

Tetsuo Kanzaki
Father of Kaito, Tetsuo is a man of common looks who most encapsulates a hardworking farmer. Tanned by the sun with a strong frame he is often seen plowing the field and doing the majority of the heavy lifting in the family. Visually, he is almost the polar opposite of his son. Short black hair, a masculine visage, and extremely physically capable. This however is due to his background, a retired Imperial Knight.
He is incredibly optimistic and cheery, often being the nexus of a party. Tetsuo had a deep love for his son that is difficult to express and not come across as pitying. He is conflicted about how to properly convey to his son that he loves his son unconditionally, regardless of his ailment.
In his time as an Imperial Knight, he has come across a myriad of creatures and wielders of the supernatural. During his time he bared witness to many of his brethren die at the hands of Sorcery and because of this, hates the use of Magic. His wife is the only one who captivated him despite having such abilities.
Instead of utilizing Magic, he is capable of harnessing his internal energy to increase his physical prowess and can even project it as an aura.

Akane Kanzaki
Mother of Kaito, she is the one that he takes after the most. Incredibly beautiful and sporting very rare and desirable hereditary traits, she exudes an aura of royalty. Her most striking features are her eyes and extremely long hair, both of which are as white as the essence of winter. She is precise in her actions and maintains a calm demeanor, often being the voice of reason and wisdom, contrasting her husband's boisterous attitude. While she has done incredibly well keeping it a secret to all except her husband, she has a royal lineage tied to Sorcery and as a result, has the ability to utilize magic.
Because of her demeanor and the magic which was her specialty, she was nicknamed "Akane the Ice Witch". Like Tetsuo, she is most concerned with Kaito's physical malady it has become her weakness to try what is possible for her son. She has extreme pride in his incredible intelligence. In a mix of pride and guilt, she supplies him with the literature he asks for as she feels incapable of helping him in any other way.
She has a deep understanding of Water Magic, with a specialty in Ice.

Dr. Kobayashi
A rugged middle-aged man with messy brown hair, he is an individual who poses as a doctor in order to evaluate people. This evaluation is actually a way to scout out those with hidden supernatural talent before the Inquisition can find them. He is most often seen in a grey robe and glasses. His voice is deep and raspy as if he didn't want to speak but had no other choice.
His most striking feature is his hands, which look as if they don't belong to him due to how aged they look. His hands are permanently disfigured due to his pursuit of a certain skill in magic though, he keeps this to himself if possible as it is a source of shame for him. He often invents a different story each time someone asks him about his hands, even if they were to ask twice in succession.
He is a somewhat sarcastic individual and is equally pessimistic.
