Chapter 1 - End of Carter

The horns blared a retreat. Carter looked on in amusement as he saw his keep burn. He looked up at the sky seeing the dark sky and the dark clouds that looked like they would cry at any moment. He had fought through the raiders killing 23 men in his way. He made it to the middle of the swarm of Vikings before they stopped coming at him. Instead of rushing toward him, they ran around him like a rock in a river no one wanted to close into a one-on-one fight with him. His keep burned behind him and he looked on in a haze.

"I worked as hard as I could to keep my people and this kingdom safe, and all it took was a single letter to the Danish king to have my walls come crashing down and the town that I was raised in burned to a crisp." He laughed at his idiocy and the kings. He looked at the ground in a daze and threw his Warhammer and his tower shield to the ground. "All this metal armor and not one dent from the battle, they must truly fear me." He knelt to the ground and took off his bracers. He dropped them to the ground and pushed up his visor. "They must truly fear the wrath of a templar or my god."

Three hours later he looked on, he still knelt on the ground but the Vikings had long gone into the keep. He turned to look at the gate of the keep that was broken down and saw 6 soldiers approaching him cautiously all wore the attire of the raiders two had huge war axes while the rest had short swords with a buckler.

"Do you have any last prayers great templar?" One of the men with a great axe said.

"Yes." Carter then raised his hand before whispering, "God if you can hear my prayer please listen to me I know my hands are drowned in an ocean of blood but please give my son and wife a happy life and let them not suffer through this world as I did." Carter looked back down and stared at the soldiers before grabbing his Warhammer and tower shield while also lowering his visor. His eyes grew cold as he looked at the soldiers approaching him.

The soldiers seeing him finish his prayer and grab his weapon hardened their resolve before all 6 of them charged him. The first to step close to Carter was one of the axe-wielding raiders he charged straight towards him with his axe raised high both hands on the shaft but right before he could swing and cleave straight through Carter's helm he sidestepped and bashed the side of the man but before he could bring his hammer around he was engaged by a raider with a sword and a buckler. The soldier stabbed at his side but Carter saw the sword coming and dodged back and used the edge of his shield to catch the sword throwing it across the field. One soldier was still on the ground as he had been hit hard by his shield but was coming to. The other had no sword but still had a shield while the others were closing in on him. He knew that he would die if couldn't react fast enough so he dropped his shield and put both hands on his hammer. The one with the buckler circled close intending to stall him so that the others could back him up but it was already too late as Carter's hammer came crashing down on the buckler shattering the wood and breaking the arm that was behind the shield. He screamed with pain as his wrist had fully shattered as it was directly behind the impact and accidently lowered his buckler. That would be his last mistake as Carter's hammer came full force on the crown of his helm denting the metal and shattering his skull instantly killing him.

Carter looked at the charging men and looked at the other man still struggling up. He looked down at the man mercilessly. He took his hammer and crushed the man's skull then he was instantly engaged by another soldier with an axe. The soldier swung straight for his head but Carter was able to block with the haft of his hammer. Carter struggled as the bladed inched closer to his face. Right before the axe touched his head he kicked out catching the soldier unaware and breaking one of his balls with the toe of his boot. The man instantly scrunched up and placed his hands right around his groin while screaming. Carter looked at the man and brought his hammer around and hit the temple of man crushing his skull. Carter had no time to breathe before he was bashed with a shield dazing him. He hit the ground hard dazed and out of breath. The man walked up to him and aimed straight for his heart Carter saw his mouth move but couldn't hear any words come out. The sword came down but before it could pierce his lung he kicked out and tripped the man up but not before the sword stabbed into his shoulder. He screamed with the pain but pushed through it and got up onto his feet panting from the pain and exertion. He pulled the sword from his arm and used it to slice the man's throat. The last two soldiers were grouped up, shields together forming a sort of shield wall. Carter walked toward them and grabbed his hammer and a buckler from a corpse on the ground. He strapped the buckler onto his arm so he wouldn't have to force his hand to hold onto it.

He looked straight between the soldiers and charged toward them. As soon as he got close one raider swung for his arm, luckily it was the one with the buckler. Carter immediately reflected on the attack. The other soldier on the other hand broke off from the wall and stabbed at his side. Carter was too focused on fighting the other soldier to see the attack coming toward him and was stabbed in the side leaving a deep cut but not puncturing any organs. Carter grimaced but swept the soldier's sword that he was currently fighting away. He grabbed the buckler and pulled down and headbutted him breaking his nose then turned around and swung full force at the other's sword. Carter shattered the other raider's sword and cut deep into the raider's neck cutting his vocal cord and windpipe. Carter dropped to the ground holding his side and coughing out blood. He looked at the wound again and realized it pierced his lung but he was so focused on killing the soldier that he didn't feel the pain and how he couldn't breathe as well. Carter grabbed a piece of cloth from the soldier he had just killed and started to bandage his side until the last soldier that he forgot about stabbed him straight in the back hitting his liver. He screamed from the pain turning and grabbing his short sword from his side and cutting horizontally across his lower stomach letting his organs fall out. He fell screaming and trying to hold his organs in. Carter got up noticeably struggling and took his sword and cut the man's throat leaving him to drown in his own blood. Carter fell on his back exhausted and coughing up blood from his lung. He knew his time had come and looked at the carnage he had killed 40 men by himself this was by far one of his bloodiest battles.

"God if you can hear me please let my child and wife have a good life away from war and all the evils of this war I may not deserve to go to heaven but they are both innocent and my son doesn't deserve to grow up the way I did." He closed his mouth as the last words he said echoed through the field. Finally he knew no more the life of the great War Knight came to an end on the battlefield one of the deadliest know to his empire as they had suffered a massive lost from the battle and the Vikings had secured a keep and by doing so they could safely transport troops into the mainland without having to fight a sea to land battle suffering huge losses by doing so.
